 With a musical CV that includes working with  reggae heavyweights such as Max Romeo, Earl Sixteen and having been mentored by Mad Professor from a young age, Professor Skank knows exactly how to bring the dub pressure. His time in Mad Professor’s legendary Ariwa studios is clear to hear; keeping Milton’s voice and melody but little else, the bulging digital bass fills the speakers, with newly added militant horns, keys and drums driving the track with righteous energy, the magic spells of the echo box taking the intimate  tropical feel of the original into serious soundsystem territory. Decebut i ressentit per aquesta descoberta, el protagonista malda per alliberar-se de la figura materna i comença a freqüentar amistats dubtoses que el portaran a deixar enrere la innocència. La brutalitat d’aquests nous amics l’espanta però també hi ha alguna cosa d’ells que el fascina, una atracció deliciosa i cruel que l’atrapa i el repulsa alhora. Moravia explora amb precisió la dolorosa i incerta aventura de l’adolescent que es veu atrapat entre dues edats. Més enllà de la descripció d’una etapa difícil i plena de turments, en aquesta història hi podem llegir els símptomes d’una altra crisi que se situa en el centre de tota l’obra de l’autor: el desajustament entre la consciència i la realitat. Nascut a Roma el 1907, Alberto Moravia va escriure la seva primera novel·la, Els indiferents, quan tenia poc menys de vint anys en un sanatori del nord d’Itàlia on es refeia d’una tuberculosi que no li va deixar acabar els estudis. Durant la Segona Guerra Mundial, va ser perseguit pels feixistes per haver escrit una sàtira política. Després del final de la guerra, torna a Roma i gaudeix d’una gran popularitat. La seva obra està conformada per una trentena de títols entre els quals destaquen El conformista, El menyspreu i La camperola. Algunes de les seves novel·les han estat adaptades al cinema per directors com ara Vittorio De Sica o Jean-Luc Godard. Agostino també va ser duta al cinema el 1962. Va morir a Roma el setembre del 1990.

Como uma transfusão de sangue, creio que comecei a sentir-me cada vez mais próximo da música de José Mário Branco à medida que a fui tocando e cantando, sempre que a oportunidade surgia. Como se a espessura ética e poética das suas canções fosse progressivamente ocupando e fortalecendo um lugar onde antes havia insegurança e incerteza, à medida que as fui cantando e cantando e acreditando cada vez mais no que cantava. 

Depois de uma muito considerável quantidade de concertos centrados no seu trabalho, que foram afinando essa proximidade, surgiu um convite para -porque não?- fazer um registo que lhe fosse inteiramente dedicado. É uma voz agora oportuna e necessária a de José Mário Branco? É pungente e transborda beleza e coragem? Sem dúvida. E aqui estamos. E o mais intrigante para mim é lançar um disco onde pela primeira vez sou exclusivamente intérprete das canções de outra pessoa e sentir que é talvez o disco mais íntimo que alguma vez produzi. Cabe-me agradecer ao autor este privilégio de me sentir mais completo e menos só, aqui na casa que ele construiu para todos.

From Mozambican descent he was born and raised in the suburbs of Lisbon, Portugal and has lived in Saudi Arabia, Madeira Island and Mozambique.

Milton Gulli is an artist deeply immersed in the lusophone sounds, and Lisbon’s contemporary african music scene.

His first project Philharmonic Weed started in 1997, releasing the EP “Capital Som” (2003) and the album “Primeiro Mundo” (2007), graciously mixing reggae, funk, soul and african music with conscious lyrics and a very activist attitude.

In 2005 he was invited to be the lead singer for veteran portuguese funk soul band Cool Hipnoise, recording the band´s last album with the same name (2006) and the radio hit “Brother Joe”.

In the same year he and musician/producer Gonçalo Oliveira founded the still active 12 piece afrobeat orchestra Cacique´97. This collective released two albums “Cacique´97” (2009) and “We Used To Be Africans” (2016).

He was also seen exploring dub, reggae and hip hop with The Grasspoppers artistic crew. In Lisbon he has been invited to play with Prince Wadada, Kimi Djabaté, Mercado Negro, Marcelo D2 and was featured in many albums from artists like Rocky Marsiano, IZEM, Cabrita, Sam The Kid, Sagas, XEG and others.

9 years ago he moved to Mozambique and soon started working with the rapper Simba on the acclaimed british label BBE´s release “The Heroes – A Tribute To A Tribe, a Mozambican tribute to a A Tribe Called Quest and, at the same time helping to produce Azagaia´s “Cubaliwa” for Milton´s newly established independent label Kongoloti Records. In Maputo, Milton has produced albums from Deltino Guerreiro, Ras Skunk, Spirits Indigenous and coproduced Granmah´s debut album and also played with Azagaia, Simba, DRP, TP50 and many others. He has composed the soundtrack for the mozambican film Resgate/Redemption, available on Netflix.

His music has always been for the people and about the people. Empowerment of the underprivileged, equality, justice, education for all and a world without borders.
