Apoptygma Berzerk se creó en Noruega el 1989 por Stefan Groth junto a Jon Erik Martisen, cuya música estaba clasificada dentro del género de la EBM, y claramente influenciada por Front 242 y Nitzer EBB. Poco después editaron un par de maquetas e iniciaron un primer contacto con Tatra Records, que editó el maxi-single «Ashes to Ashes» en 1991.

A principios de 1993 editaron el EP «The Seconds Manifesto», y telonearon a Nitzer Ebb, Young Gods y Die Krupps. «Soli Deo Gloria» (1994) era uno de los álbumes más esperados del año, y sin duda cumplió con las expectativas creadas.

Stefan esperó dos años para presentar el segundo larga duración de Apoptygma Berzerk titulado «7». Éste es el álbum que marca un antes y un después en su carrera: suma a su sonido influencias del techno y el pop electrónico de los ochenta. Las ventas de este disco se disparan.

Durante 1997 Apoptygma Berzerk edita «Mourn E.P». Su buena reputación y fama hace que en 1998, grandes bandas como Front 242 y Project Pitchfork les encarguen remezclas para maxi-singles. También realizan su primer tour en USA, donde reúnen a más de 20.000 personas.

En 1999 editan un álbum en directo y se encierran en el estudio para empezar la grabación del tercer álbum. «Welcome to Earth» ve la luz a principios del 2000. Modernos ritmos Techno-Trance, deliciosas voces pop… El álbum se convierte en nº1 de las listas alternativas alemanas durante más de 6 meses.
