Alongside the delicious aggressiveness that made Audio so renowned, his ‘Beastmode’ LP cracks him open like you’ve never heard him before. Fiercely powerful, yet intricately different, each cut from his debut album on the Ram Records imprint packs a very different punch whilst hitting with the same fierceness and wealth of talent.

‘Beastmode’ reflects all his output to date. Whether it’s the old-school flavor of virus, or the steppy-unapologetic riddims he’s served up for Ram, this record won’t leave you questioning who rules supreme over the genre’s murkier waters.

Whether it’s the half-time, two stepping ‘Move it Along’ or the pulsing, snarling undertones of ‘Thud’, you’re blessed with a barrage full of fresh sonic assaults. ‘Thunder Ridge’ serves as the perfect opener, a brand new record with synth-laddered foreboding intro which pushes you below the surf. Tinkling hi-hats and a distorted LFO adds shockwaves throughout the mix, submerging you even deeper. Urgent, pulsing and nastily crafted, this is Audio at his most fearsome.

On the other hand, ‘Rogue’ presents a clanking, runaway riddim that snaps its teeth with every break. Stacked between ominous build ups and jaunty samples, the second drop flairs out as angrily as the first, demonstrating Audio’s ingenious sound design.

And flipping the switch once again is ‘Sovereign’, a nod to the producer’s roots and a track that gradually builds its presence throughout. Between warbling stabs and peddled kick drum, you’re drawn by the aural nerves. Elevating beat patterns set you up for another descent into madness, through a stringently tight composition.

Featuring artists, such as drum & bass heavyweight Prolix, also take center stage. Their collaboration ‘Creatures’, alongside the revered lyricist Nuklear MC, adds a welcomed surprise. ‘Creatures’ delivers everything you’d expect and more; steroid-pumped subs, the dark overture of Nuklear and apocalyptic atmospherics.

Also featured on its weighty track listing are singles ‘Make it Happen’, ‘Overdose’, ‘Drop it Human’ and ‘Shatterdome’. They were a precursor for what was to come, which signified one of the darkest, most uncompromising productions yet on Ram Records… In all of its twenty five years of history.

Fame and fortune: doesn’t everyone dream of such luxuries in our modern world? Indeed, such lofty positions seem to appear out of thin air to those who are visited by them, gifts from a gilt messenger that fall randomly upon those who do not even ask for it. What? Then, what must I do to receive such a visitation. Is it not enough that I want it? Is it not enough that I crave with every ounce of my being the admiration of all those around me? To be the object of their envious stares? So many waste their stardom, squandering it with their “effort” and “devotion” as though they’ve forgotten that they’re already famous!

Were I to be in their position, I would certainly not waste away such golden moments with such pointless work. I would sit, not upon a couch but upon a throne, exquisitely decorated with only the finest of materials. There, I would languish in my lavish lifestyle, my every need attended to by the throngs of adoring fans who would celebrate my very existence. It’s a shame really that no one notices how fit I would be for the lifestyle, the parties, the photos, the “doing nothing” all day. I’ve certainly got that last part well practiced. We’re being famous actually a job, I’d be a shoe in for the position. It's not though of course, and all the smart people know that. Some may claim to have worked for it, some may claim to have taken years to reach their status, but I know differently. I know what they say isn't true. I know it's not you that makes fame, but fame that makes you.

AKOV returns to the EATBRAIN pack with his latest EP YOU WANT IT. Following up 2017s Shapeshifter EP on the label, YOU WANT IT is the latest in a high volume of releases from AKOV across further labels such as C4C Recordings, Bad Taste Recordings, and Othercide Records. On display for the first time within the EP are AKOV’s own rap vocals, such as on the titular U WANT IT, which features a rapid fire vocal lead before launching into a chaotically warped bassline signature of the AKOV sound. The twin mixes of BLIND then contrast each other, with the SUN MIX charting melodic course marked by reverberating synth sweeps and a smoother sung vocal melody, while the MOON MIX features an elastic bassline alongside these elements. INTERSTELLAR’s electric sonic elements combine with the vocals of MULTIPLEX for a frantic audio sequence which closes the EP at lightspeed. Much time had passed since that first moment of DIVERGENCE, in which one had sacrificed the joys of his existence for the betterment of all. Where once a man had stood, now a great tree remained, presiding over the village with the commanding presence of its incredible size. For years the magic of its boughs had shielded those below from harm, but time had worn upon its trunk and the wards that it projected now threatened to falter at the onslaught of the spirits that had long thrown themselves at the border. A single life, it seemed, could not keep evil at bay for all eternity. This fact was known to the council of the village below, and as the great tree began to slip from the world, they set in motion a further plan.

In the depths of one of the great mountains that surrounded the village, its every inhabitant worked tirelessly, hewing and hauling the stone bones of the earth out from the grand chamber they were constructing. At its center, the village’s most skilled artisans worked diligently, inscribing the face of a great obelisk with runes and symbols in a language known to none of them. Night and day the village toiled, until at the final strike of a pickaxe they heard a most ominous sound. A pained groan uttered its way through the valley, followed by the thunderous impact of what could only be the felling of the great tree. The villagers cowered within the cavern, watching in horror as the spirits of evil began to flit about the ceiling above them. Yet as all seemed lost each spirit that had entered the chamber was wrenched downwards, its essence bound to the great obelisk, which trapped their visages in caricatures of agony upon its surface. Though the flood of spirits seemed unending, each and every one soon found itself within a similar stone prison as the dissonant howls of these creatures of evil faded into nothingness within its earthly being. At this sight, the village rejoiced whilst remembering the one who had sacrificed much for them. Though life could not hold back the flood of DIVERGENCE, stone would bind it to its inescapable form.
