Some of the rowdiest drum 'n' bass of the last five years has come courtesy of Austrian producer Mefjus (pictured). 

Tilt Recordings, Mindtech and Disturbed were a few of the labels his earliest work was released on and in 2012 he hooked up with tech-infected d'n'b purveyors Critical Recordings for the first time. That was the cutthroat Enei collaboration 'Crawlers' and he released his debut album, 'Emulation', on the Kasra-founded imprint last year.

Alongside the delicious aggressiveness that made Audio so renowned, his ‘Beastmode’ LP cracks him open like you’ve never heard him before. Fiercely powerful, yet intricately different, each cut from his debut album on the Ram Records imprint packs a very different punch whilst hitting with the same fierceness and wealth of talent. 

‘Beastmode’ reflects all his output to date. Whether it’s the old-school flavor of virus, or the steppy-unapologetic riddims he’s served up for Ram, this record won’t leave you questioning who rules supreme over the genre’s murkier waters. 

Whether it’s the half-time, two stepping ‘Move it Along’ or the pulsing, snarling undertones of ‘Thud’, you’re blessed with a barrage full of fresh sonic assaults. ‘Thunder Ridge’ serves as the perfect opener, a brand new record with synth-laddered foreboding intro which pushes you below the surf. Tinkling hi-hats and a distorted LFO adds shockwaves throughout the mix, submerging you even deeper. Urgent, pulsing and nastily crafted, this is Audio at his most fearsome. 

On the other hand, ‘Rogue’ presents a clanking, runaway riddim that snaps its teeth with every break. Stacked between ominous build ups and jaunty samples, the second drop flairs out as angrily as the first, demonstrating Audio’s ingenious sound design. 

And flipping the switch once again is ‘Sovereign’, a nod to the producer’s roots and a track that gradually builds its presence throughout. Between warbling stabs and peddled kick drum, you’re drawn by the aural nerves. Elevating beat patterns set you up for another descent into madness, through a stringently tight composition. 

Featuring artists, such as drum & bass heavyweight Prolix, also take center stage. Their collaboration ‘Creatures’, alongside the revered lyricist Nuklear MC, adds a welcomed surprise. ‘Creatures’ delivers everything you’d expect and more; steroid-pumped subs, the dark overture of Nuklear and apocalyptic atmospherics. 

Also featured on its weighty track listing are singles ‘Make it Happen’, ‘Overdose’, ‘Drop it Human’ and ‘Shatterdome’. They were a precursor for what was to come, which signified one of the darkest, most uncompromising productions yet on Ram Records… In all of its twenty five years of history.

Kosen 22 sees the next release from the amazing Signs trio. Constantly looking for new and innovative sounds, the French label once again looks at the Signs, this time coming with The Pursuit, which is backed with Groove Propulsion.

Opsen, Primal Therapy and Le Lutin are the producers behind Signs, each having an established career, and their own sound, which they have brought together to make the group strong, unique and dedicated to the funk. Their collaboration developed quickly, creating dancefloor hits for a number of labels which got them noticed by those that matters. They head into the future with The Pursuit and Groove Propulsion.

The Pursuit is big in more ways than one, with a complex flavour that erupts out of the intro. Filling your speakers with a manic sense of anticipation, this one builds subtly to a crescendo of sound before it has even begun. When the main section drops in, you’re caught between wanting to break out and wanting to listen ever so intently for the changes. It builds up again, unleashing more and more sound, as Signs keep their expression firmly within barriers. Constantly refreshing and coming up again with new effects and samples, The Pursuit really is something to behold. Here is the future of Kosenprod, and the future of drum & bass music.

Groove Propulsion is, as the name suggests, a fast paced dash into outer space. Filmic, cinematic themes make themselves plain in the opening, before Signs drop down to launch a weighty, bassy main section. Random drops of drums simmer up to the surface before dropping down, backed with weird, fluid noises which increase in intensity as things carry on. Signs are not afraid or ashamed to do things their own way, and have the skills to back up their intensions. Groove Propulsion is just one shining example of why they are so good, and why so many people are getting behind them.

MIZO: Black Mirror
When looking at Mizo as an artist and what he’s achieved over the start of his career, it’ll come as no shock that he’s a Russian producer. It seems that Russia has become a microcosm of the drum & bass genre and everything it represents; even from the countries furthest reaches, it’s delivered astounding talent, the type of which has been comparable to figures who’ve spent decades in the game. Mizo’s own output has only followed this trend. 

With music on the likes of Eatbrain, Blackout, Dutty Audio and Kosen, he’s never once allowed himself to drop his impeccable production grades. His upcoming EP on Cause4Concern still doesn’t break these rules. 
Although this time, Mizo has again entered the world of Cause4Concern, a label who recently celebrated twenty years in the game and an imprint who’ve proven over the entirety of their lifespan that they’re able to keep up with the current musical climate. Mizo’s forthcoming ‘Black Mirror’ EP is a tribute to this – from ‘Animate’ through to ‘Gravity Fall’, it’s easy to see how Mizo came under the fearsome stretch of C4C. 

‘Animate’ begins ‘Black Mirror’ with crackling bass switches and grooves which give the track its momentum as it gradually breaks down. ‘Shaman’ pulls you against its twisting synthesis and tribal-like atmospherics, which create a deeper soundscape to become emerged in. ‘The Pursuit’ features Trilo and as part of the collaboration both artists add their take on a merging of the subgenre’s murkier realms and a more dancefloor influenced edge. ‘Black Mirror’ is the EP’s title-track and it focuses heavily on its slamming drums, centralising the cut with each weighty drum pad. Then ‘Gravity Fall’ is the finishing number, rolling through with sweeping peaks and deep troughs of bass. It provides an exploration of Mizo’s capabilities, showcasing his ingenious strokes of production. Already boasting support from artists such as Noisia, Black Sun Empire, State of Mind, Rene LaVice and Ed Rush, Mizo is a force to be reckoned with. Returning to Cause4Concern, their vast audience is once again about to become enthralled in the music of Mizo.
