For the 12th chapter of Terra Sonus, Blind Observatory leads a way to the Lake Taifu-Ikka - rather an idea, a mind construct than a place itself.

''One of the biggest joys for me when it comes to DJing is the actual preparation. Envisioning the situation in advance and laying out a colour palette of sounds that I would like to paint a picture with. However, on my last journey to Japan this became a very complicated task as a typhoon was laying over the festival site soaking everything in uncertainty. 

The night before my set I was sitting in my room, flipping through notebooks filled with playlists, desperately trying to find the right moves and account for every outcome. Like a Chess player calculating all possible continuations but none of them win. It was only when I realised and accepted that it is out my hands and I’ll have to trust my intuition, that I could find some peace of mind. 

I remember arriving at the stage thinking that even in rain on such a grey day everything feels so serene and calm. To my surprise, the clouds broke right before my play-time, leaving the sky bright blue. Funnily I had prepared for this exact possibility, nonetheless I played a completely different set. This time, it seemed, the situation had painted a picture of me.

Someone told me 台風一過 (Taifu-Ikka) is the Japanese expression describing this clear blue sky after a typhoon has passed. I thought a lot about it throughout the past year when I spent some time near a lake and would go for a swim in the early morning hours as often as I could. It had a very similar effect on me. So, “Lake Taifu-Ikka” is less of an actual place than it is an idea, a mind construct. A ritual of sorts, that helps me to move some clouds and clear up my mind. This set is an attempt to recreate this sensation. ''

F-on (Alfonso Pomeda) is the owner of Alpenglühen (the label) focused in deep and ambient techno which explores the thin line between light and darkness.

His progressive sessions, profound and with long mixes, are real voyages that sail through experimental music, ambient and horizontal and dubby techno.

F-on's productions are 4x4 experiments of low tempo with field recordings and marked spaces, where he explores timbres, textures and cinematographic structures. He is a resident at the Alpenglühen and Taiga sessions and owner of the label Antimatter together with Bule.

Perhaps it's a darkness of vast ocean depths. Perhaps it's the darkness of deep space.
Yet otherworldly sounds set off the imagination creating dozens of incredibly bright sparks. They lead the way gradually revealing what looms beneath – perhaps it's the darkness of vast ocean depths, perhaps it's the darkness of deep space, perhaps it's something entirely different.

Black Wave 015 – Vera Logdanidi

He’s just as focussed on musical dynamics; with expansive chords but intimate effects, and how sounds move about in the club as well as in your head. He makes soundscapes rather than tracks, where euphoric moods and thunderous basslines can coexist, and where minute little details capture your mind’s eye while punchy drum work makes an immediate physical impact. He explores the rough and the smooth, the loud and the quiet, the cerebral and the visceral in aquatic and naturalistic worlds where electro, techno, dub and ambient are blurred into one. 

This means that as both a producer and comprehensive live act, the Dutchman can take you from the furthest reaches of outer space to the depths of an oceanic abyss via crackling and frozen tundras. He does so under three aliases—VC-118A, Mohlao, Multicast Dynamics, but all are interconnected and related, with a modular approach to making and performing music meaning that a pumping breakbeat live-set can easily be transformed into an abstract sonic landscape by reducing and modifying elements, playing with textures and reworking structures. 

“I’m always searching for a duality, something that marries dance floor functionality with an end of the world melodrama that gets deep inside your head,” says the artist. “My process is intuitive and unplanned, so I can start with sound design and atmospherics first, or get lost in rhythms.” This understanding of narrative, as well as groove, means that whatever alias he assumes, he can pump out a peak time festival set, twist you inside out with an intimate session in a cosy club or play an experimental soundscape set in more thought provoking settings with his own avant garde visuals. Dancers at cult places like Tresor, Denovali Festival and a Boiler Room showcase in Nijmegen have all experienced this in the recent past. 

Known by electronic music obsessives as one of electro’s shining lights, the last decade has seen van Dijk excel in both EP and LP format. His achingly beautiful melancholic moods and roomy, absorbing grooves are so fully realised that they work well beyond the club context and have come on top labels like Delsin, Frustrated Funk and Silent Season amongst others. They include highlights like the tension between raw machine sounds and ethereal pads that were explored on VC-118A’s underground classic Vaxna; Shift Register, which was made from largely one-take hardware jams with an instinctive and lo-fi finish, and the slow burning techno of Mohlao’s Landforms LP. Of course, his Multicast Dynamics album quadrilogy on Denovali also laid out immersive ambient worlds in truly escapist ways. 

The future will bring more multi-layered interplay between these varied but related projects on both solo and collaborative releases. This exploration of opposing forces will continue in the live arena, too, where van Dijk can arrest your attention with thrilling sets of guttural and gritty techno, take you into the future with his electro or zone you out with cathartic ambient. Whatever he does, dance floor experiences are rarely as immersive and emotional as those crafted by this multifaceted artist.

Whether as a Dj, label owner or his role as an event promoter, French born Souleiman Bacar aka lunar convoy has been making a name for himself on the Brussels scene since 2015. Black Wave podcast no. 27.

On a clear and windless night, the sea calms down and creates a mirror to the outer space. When the clouds dissolve, something shines through, throwing a sharp reflection far over the surface. Full moon arises so different and so familiar, with its plains, its valleys, its craters and its volcanoes.
Roaming silently where once the roaring lava seas were, measuring the depths, collecting data, counting days and nights spent on its mission – lunar convoy leaves its mark on the silky smooth, regolith covered moon’s surface. You can almost see it on a clear and windless night, reflecting from the outer space onto the mirror-like sea.

Black Wave 026 – Saphileaum

From Moscow to NYC, to Berlin – Mary Yuzovskaya quickly became a key figure in the US techno scene and elsewhere. With many of the main techno spots under her belt, a record label "Monday Off" and her first solo EP coming out, Mary brings her unique take on music to Black Wave podcast no. 28.

As if a heavy fog has lifted its never-ending mantle the mind awakens. Suddenly a stinging pain rushes over as the tears of the sea become your own. Rubbing the eyes, unfortunately, makes no sense – embrace it, feel it, live with it. And gradually, the burning sensation goes away, as for the first time you can see where the sea has taken you. On a distant shore, away from everything and everyone, experiencing a precious moment in time – to be alive.

Years and years of music exploration have led Alfonso Pomeda aka F-on to the job at the record shop, to owning a record label Alpenglühen and to the unique djing style with progressive sessions, profound and long mixes, real voyages that sail through experimental music, ambient, horizontal and dubby techno.

With every step forwards it’s a step more into the unknown. Cautiously pushing of an ocean bed a thought catches you off guard – this certainly is the last time in a long while before the familiar grains of sand will greet your tired feet anew. Though, consciousness now has its battle – the darkness beneath the body, the black waves catching up to you. Life long fight with self, the fight against the fear of nothingness deep under.

Now’s the time to leave before another storm hits the coast, deeper into the island. Sand quickly replaced with leaves rustling under the weight of your drained body. A swift change in light marks the entering to the jungle. Rumbling of the ocean is left far behind, tropical heat with an orchestra of birds, animals and insects overflows every bit of you. Although, one particular sound stands out, with slow but steady repetition inviting from deep within the forest. The closer you get, the easier it is to distinguish meditative hum followed by a voice – a human voice. Emerging from the shadows a giant black rock with the carving o a wave appears, and the eyes gazing directly into you – the shaman has been waiting.
