Listening Session w/ Luke Una

As a DJ, a part of the Unabombers and as promoter of the legendary Electric Chair nights, Homoelectric, Electric Elephant Festival and Homobloc, Luke Una was not only contributing massively to Manchester’s 80s and 90s club scene but still carries a deep passion to share his music in clubs around the world. He is the curator of seminal compilations such as the Electric Chair and Electric Soul series as well as his latest É Soul Cultura project and label.

This Session was recorded for "Kasheme Conversations", an interview series from, with and for music lovers. This month with Luke Una.
In our conversation, Una shares what caused his relentless pursuit of music, why he would not call himself a record collector and why he is, as he calls it, so evangelical about music.

Besties João “Ka§par” Pires and Fabrizio “Terra Chã” Reinolds have more than fifty year’s worth of combined experience in collecting records, recording tracks and spinning tunes for discerning listeners and dancers. The culmination of their shared perspective comes in the shape of the Petingas project.

Fabrizio, one halve of the highly acclaimed Terra Chã duo (who released their second EP “Missão” on Percebes recently) gathered samples from rare portuguese disco tracks and applied a peculiar vision while Ka§par played on top, programmed and engineered both originals.

“Morena Salgada” is a hypnotic groove driven plunge into pleasure, reminiscent of early Theo Parrish, Aubrey or Russ Gabriel...

... while “Suave Lambada” impresses with it’s afro inspired vibe, deep yet sensual groove, sure to get many a couple dancing on the floor.

Two of the most talented contemporary producers came in to breathe further funk onto either track: best seller Larry Quest broke “Suave Lambada” into a soulful break acid number.

Head Detroit techno specialist minimalArchiv went full deep into "Morena Salgada" with a certain New Age boogie flavour to it. Extremely original, very special release.

Manchester, Sprechen is one of those imprints whose core sonority turns its catalogue into a wealthy source for the ones in search of high-quality space-inspired gems. From Saturn-sunset Balearic deliciousness to Mars-dawn House Music furor, its collection fails to disappoint – and its forthcoming episode is another irrefutable proof: The acclaimed “Edgy Future Discotheque” VA-series reaches its sixth volume and showcases the aforementioned soundscapes. Coyote remixed by Massey, Popsneon, La Guardia De La Luz (with not one but two tracks on board), Mummy's Boy, and minimalArchiv jumped in hard with stunning cuts devoted to triggering zero gravity experiences on the dance floor.

The theme we hand-picked to premiere was cooked with love by maestro Chris Massey, the label honcho himself, who decided to give a go on Coyote's “Cami' De Sa Veleta”, originally released in 2021, and delivered an “emotion-filled blast of synth-tinged and sunshine-drenched amazingness”. Melodic leads, soothing percussive elements, and a roaring synth extravaganza create the perfect opening for the compilation.

Having become first recognised in the late 80’s and 90’s as one half of production team “The Unabombers” with Justin Crawford, Luke over the years has shown to be a master in all genres be it Balearic, to Brazilian to E soul, House, Disco and Techno, you name it!
