"What is it about my music that's touching other people?" One of the forefathers of techno reflects on his legacy, the state of techno music and the city of Detroit live from IMS.

Most people in nightlife are familiar with the name Juan Atkins. One of the originators of techno, he grew up in Belleville, a middle-class suburb of Detroit, and would become one of the Belleville Three alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. This first wave of Detroit techno artists was inspired by the late night emissions of radio DJ The Electrifying Mojo—a late-night presenter who famously mixed different synth music, like Krautrock and the German outfit Kraftwerk—and the writing of futurists like Alvin Toffler, who imagined a different, utopic vision of urban life and technology. 

In this keynote interview recorded live at International Music Summit in Ibiza, Atkins reflects on his roots and the musical movement that's grown from his first experiments with techno in the '80s. Returning to his adolescence, he unpacks the origins of his electro collaboration Cybotron, his solo project Model 500 (coming to Houghton this year) and his label, Metroplex, which became a blueprint for a hoard of techno imprints that would emerge in its wake. Now 61, Atkins also reflects on the broader impact music has had on his life—he has given lectures on the intersection of physics, music and spirituality—as well as the remaining stones left unturned as he enters the (very much still active) sunset in his career. Intergalactic Gary has been one of our favorite DJs for many years, as his genre transcendence aligns perfectly with IT’s vision. This set was recorded in a very special circumstance, at Tresor 313, May 25, 2024 at the Tangent Gallery on Day 1 of Return to the Source. Originally scheduled for 2 hours, it naturally extended to almost 4 hours, which is the kind of thing that is possible at this party when just the right chemistry happens.

We had Intergalactic Gary on directly after the Model 500 live show in the Gallery, the room was already on fire. When he came on he totally captivated the room, the energy was palpable as he effortlessly went from all sorts of variants of techno and house and the raw essence of what makes them – from Italo disco to early Chicago and forms of electro, culminating in his effortless presentation of the timeless sublime jam “Amenity” by Link, a peak experience for everyone present. This kind of perspective on music is really elucidating and liberating, and made for one of the most memorable sets of the weekend – delivered by a true cult hero.

This year I asked to play a sunrise set and the good keepers of Diane's kindly obliged my desire. This set started at 3am and ended at 6am. I wanted to explore a joyful playful dark energy until the sun began to rise. Includes minimal favorites that I rediscovered in my collection after schlepping all the records to the new place, and some wild vortex inducing stuff that I had always wanted to play at Dianes at the darkest hour before the light started to filter through the trees. Strangely I was listening to this set when I had a near death experience last month. I feel lucky to be alive, and also relieved and grateful that K-rAD always does such an incredible job recording these sets at Dianes that will far outlive my existence in this current human form in which I feel lucky to still occupy. Sending lots of love to all my friends and family that sent me so much positive energy- it absolutely helped in my healing this month. This set is for all of you. <3
