Waggles - Minirig Mixtape

Presenting a full force D&B Jungle tearout mix from DJ Bish - a name that has recently gained support from the executioner Andy C who is currently championing not 1, not 2 but 3 of Bish’s productions in his sets. Bish’s latest release; LSD with Zoro and Jappa on the Born On Road label, is doing the rounds and getting all the pull-ups - this mixtape will show you why.   

Drum & Bass DJ & producer, Bish A.K.A Jayke Bishop (28) has been blessing the Bristol rave scene for the last 9 years, being heavily influenced by rave music and its culture. Bish started his journey by playing at underground raves and small club nights back in 2012. Bish was originally well known for his energetic mash-up sets and always raised the energy while switching through the genres. Bish often used to enjoy starting sets at 130-140 BPM, ranging from House and Garage to Bassline Electro and Prog, always switching up and finishing on some heavyweight D'n'B. This genre variation and mastery of crowd energy reading and controlled Bish to playing at bigger events and festivals throughout Europe, such as Boomtown, Glastonbury and Outlook. 

In recent years, Bish has been tearing out the Drum & Bass, supporting acts such as Chase & Status, Shy FX, Fatboy Slim, AMC and Turno. Bish always likes to keep it fresh, but is well known for his eclectic collection of hard-hitting crowd-pleasers and nostalgic anthems, and often enjoys throwing in the odd classic, while consistently styling it out with the hottest dubplates.

Strangely enough for an artist named Ed Solo, this prolific producer used to be best known for his collaborations with other artists. Deekline, Krafty Kuts, Skool of Thought, drum 'n' bass legend Brockie - all have benefited from getting Ed alongside them in the studio. The east London lad who grew up listening to pirate radios and cut his teeth as a production assistant at the famous Sour studios really is a Jedi master of sonic science: drop the needle on an Ed Solo record and you'll soon know about it - no one makes club music that cuts through a soundsystem quite like him.

And yet that moniker also - rightly - suggests a confidence in his ability to go out on his own, and Ed is an iconic artist on each of the drum 'n' bass, breaks and dubstep scenes. In the latter field, he's recently been creating a firestorm with Sludge Records, the label he co-runs with Deekline (the pair also run booty breaks imprint Hot Cakes together).

Tracks such as Age of Dub and Atlantis have introduced younger clubbers to classic dance music sounds, throwing them through a skanked out half-time prism and bringing them back to the floor in full effect. They've also picked up support from iconic figures such as Kissy Sellout and Skream - this is a producer right at the heart of the zeitgeist.

In the club, Ed is at the centre of one of the most innovative revolutionary shows of modern times, the Battlejam events run with production partner and UK DMC Champ JFB and UK beatbox champ Beardyman. Working together, the trio cut, scratch and loop up live audio recordings - some made by members of the crowd only seconds before - to create an entirely new, interactive, real-time experience.

Having just returned from a spectacularly successful tour of Canada, Ed is ready to take things to the next level. Hold tight for some serious dancefloor mayhem in your area.

Very few record labels can claim to have had the same impact on the UK music scene as significantly as Full Cycle Recordings. Often mentioned in the same breath as other iconic labels such as Good Looking Records, Metalheadz, RAM, Dope Dragon, Talkin’ Loud and V Recordings, the label has gone onto shape the current sound of UK dance music from the mid 90’s onwards. 

Musical friendships like those that helped create Full Cycle aren’t created overnight, Krust and Roni originally met at an interview for a job they were both going for. Suv could be found at local spots like the legendary Ajax Blues Club whilst Die shredded the streets of Bristol on his skateboard and was linking with Roni’s older brother’s Lasertronic Soundsystem in the early days of his music making career. After the original members spent a long weekend at Glastonbury Festival, Roni Size, Krust, Die and Suv left with a shared vision that would go on to re-shape the foundations of dance music.

Bryan G and Jumping Jack Frost gave Roni some early opportunities to release music on the legendary V Recordings, a move which started a long and productive relationship between the London and Bristol crews, but due to busy release schedule the pre-Full Cycle members found their own music building up with long delays on release dates (as well as feedback from other labels suggesting they change their names as ‘Roni or Krust would never be big’). The crew had to get their music out and couldn’t wait any longer. ‘Fuck it, let's do it ourselves’ became their mantra and in 1994, Full Cycle Records were born.

The four original members shared a vision of how they wanted they're music to sound, evolving the early energy of Jungle, Ragga Jungle and Hardcore to incorporate deeper elements from Jazz, Soul, hip hop, funk and blues into new forms of dance music. One of the labels early releases ‘Music Box’ by Roni Size and Die (released in 1994) is considered a seminal release that will go down in history as one of those records that changed so much in the scene whilst being inescapable at the time. Borrowing elements from the crates and combining those sounds with the raw, drum-led power of jungle and deep sub bass, the group had created a sound that they could truly call their own.

As the label continued to grow and influence the direction of jungle and drum and bass even further, new projects and members were introduced into the busy release schedule and extended family. Artists such as Clipz (now Redlight), D Product, Heist, Tali, Surge, Bill Riley and J Raq continued to add to the Full Cycle catalogue throughout the 2000s, whilst carving out their own place in the constantly changing sound of drum and bass. Other collaboration projects on the label such as Breakbeat Era (Roni, Die and Leonie Laws) and I Kamanchi (Die and Krust) are still considered to be classics from the era, receiving critical acclaim and continuing to be held up as a reference point for current producers in Drum and Bass and beyond. 

After 15 years of successful releases, the label took a break from releasing new music and the four original members of Full Cycle pursued new musical interests and solo projects. Now the time is right for the label to return with their unrivalled back catalogue of classics; a run of live showcases with originators Roni, Krust and MC Dynamite; and a special remix package from some of the most respected producers in the world of dance music. Lenzman is a Drum & Bass producer creating his own soulful sound which rises above trends and pushes the genre to new depths. The Dutch artist has recently launched his critically acclaimed new label – The North Quarter – as he continues to release music on Metalheadz.

His fluid approach to making music brings together glimmering samples and bold collaborations set against the backdrop of his signature melancholic style. Since the release of his debut album on Metalheadz – Looking At The Stars – Lenzman has delivered some of the scene’s most genre-defying moments and gained a loyal and
burgeoning fanbase eagerly awaiting his next move.

A label named after the area he grew up in, The North Quarter is Lenzman’s soulful exploration into new territories and encapsulates his Hip Hop, Soul and Jazz influences. The imprint releases his own music as well as music from other artists, merging together vocalists and musicians from different worlds to create a deeper and more resonating experience for Drum & Bass fans.

Lenzman’s live sets are like his music: fearless and undiluted. Bogotá, Bangkok, Toronto, London and New York – when he’s not in the studio, he has a busy tour schedule drawing crowds and packing out clubs and festivals across the globe.
