Winston Marigold is a guitarist & producer making disco and funk tracks. He’s been playing renegades around Southern California, so we’ll see where he goes next!

Welcome back to The Chapel.

Today’s service offers a full psytrance sound that is sure to blast you to another dimension. Diving right into the episode with introducing and show casing our guest mix by ATFV (@klaus-krzok).

ATFV is a self-taught producer and DJ from Bristol, UK, with a formative 9 months of experience under their portfolio. I was personally drawn into their discography on SoundCloud, which offers sounds from drum & bass, to dubstep, to psytrance.

I spoke with the mad scientist ahead of this and asked a little bit about their journey so far and where the project is headed. They are purely music driven when it comes to their production and track listing for their mixes and are currently working on some collabs and EP’s that are targeted to drop on Spotify early 2024. "Psytranceformation" - A quick genre origin story by Minister Matt:

Now, for some of the listeners that are not too familiar with Psytrance, also known as psychedelic trance or simply psy… it is a captivating subgenre of electronic dance music (EDM) that originated in Goa, India during the early 1990s. 

•	The roots of psytrance delve into the psychedelic culture of Goa, a coastal region in western India. Goa was a haven for Western backpackers seeking spiritual enlightenment, drawn by its beautiful beaches, laid-back atmosphere, and the allure of psychedelic substances like LSD and magic mushrooms. These fearless travelers brought with them a love for psychedelic rock music, which they played on rudimentary sound systems during beach parties and gatherings.

•	In the 1980s, electronic dance music began to infiltrate Goa's shores. DJs experimented with high-energy, fast-paced tracks that could keep crowds dancing throughout the night. These musical concoctions were influenced by techno, acid house, and traditional Indian music. The fusion of these elements birthed the first true psytrance parties.

•	In the early 1990s, a group of Goa-based DJs and party organizers embarked on a journey to Europe. Their mission: to introduce psytrance to a wider audience. Their efforts flourished as psytrance quickly gained popularity in countries like Israel, Germany, and the UK. A vibrant international scene emerged, fueled by pulsating beats, mind-bending visuals, and an otherworldly vibe.

In recent years, psytrance has evolved beyond its musical dimensions. Producers now emphasize sustainability and environmental consciousness at festivals and gatherings. As dancers lose themselves in the rhythm, they also connect with nature—a harmonious fusion of beats and ecological awareness.

So next time you find yourself grooving to psytrance under starlit skies or at an underground rave, remember its roots in Goa's sun-kissed beaches—the birthplace of an electrifying genre that transcends time and space.

Introduction:
For Episode 022 we have quite the bite ahead, as we dive into the sub-world of Electro music and what makes this genre such a staple to this day. I will resurface some of the Electro greats including: Soulwax, Digitalism, Mumbai Science, The Bloody Beetroots, and Proxy. 

Genre Characteristics: 
The significance of this genre is built into its characteristics. Born of funk, hip-hop, disco, and synth-pop, Electro typically makes heavy use of sine waves, offbeat rhythms, and a relatively fast tempo. Electro is typically faster than House music and features more aggressive basslines. This aggressive nature is emphasized by the distorted/industrial drum, particularly the iconic Roland TR-808. The tapping beats, handclaps/clicks, and keyboard basslines of this genre provides its strong hold on the scene since the 1980s.

A great deal of research thanks is given to Dr. Lektroluv on this episode's track selections. His iconic, Elektrik World compilations help curate the sounds ahead. Little bit about him...

At the start of her run, she primarily played at house parties and small events, but has found a larger platform in her current dwelling. The label has since gone onto record several more number 1's & countless top 10's although the ethos of the label is not about chart placings, it's about releasing music that is aimed at the dancefloor yet has some depth, the label isn't striving to appeal to the masses, its about putting out music Darius Syrossian would play in his sets. MOXY MUZIK is constantly striving to get behind upcoming talent, as well as releasing music from established artists."

Let’s explore the background of our guest today - @evgeniirymd, also known as Ev Rymd, embarked on his music journey in 2015, drawing inspiration from Eric Prydz. After experimenting with various styles within progressive house, Evgenii discovered his own unique style, characterized by deep, hypnotic progressive house with hints of the genre’s early 2000s roots.

Today I will play out my top selections from the nu-disco charts and explain the history behind this prominent sub-genre in the electronic scene today. 

For starters, lets take things back to the original influence of Disco, which emerged as a vibrant genre in the late 1960s and reached its peak around 1977. With two strong decades of releases, the world saw a revolution to remember. From there, we have the basis of what nu-disco derives from. In the 21st century, Nu-disco, also known as disco house, came to life. It’s characterized by a renewed interest in those late 1970s disco, early 1980s Italo disco, and funk providers. Nu-disco combines classic funk vibes with modern electronic dance sounds.

What are those components you may ask?
Drum Groove:
- Since nu-disco is a dance genre first and foremost, the drum grooves play an essential role.
Live Instrumentation:
- Unlike some other electronic genres, nu-disco often relies on live instrumentation. You’ll hear funky basslines, guitar riffs, and perhaps even brass sections. 
Synthesizers:
- Nu-disco embraces the legacy of the 1980s, so expect lush and nostalgic synthesizer sounds. 
Arrangement:
- Nu-disco typically follows a song structure reminiscent of classic disco hits. You’ll find multiple breakdowns, verses, and catchy choruses. 

Remember, nu-disco emerged in the late 1990s as a response to the nostalgic revival of disco in the UK and Europe. Its smooth, groove-driven sound continues to captivate listeners, bridging the gap between the past and the present.

Thank you for tuning into Episode 027 of our genre exploring series. Today's palette will revolve around INDIE DANCE. 

Lets understand this corner of electronic music a bit better and what makes it stand out from the rest, because based on my research, its not as straight forward as we see with other genres. 

Now, the heart of indie dance lies in its ability to merge the structured melodies of indie rock with the infectious beats, synths, and samples of electronic dance music. It marries the songwriting sensibilities of indie rock with the rhythmic drive and club-oriented characteristics of post-disco dance. This genre's innovative blend of styles has led it to be described as "postmodern-Eurosynth-technopop-New Wave in a blender," a label that captures its eclectic and unique essence. 

Artists that fall under this bucket also hold a wide range - from full electronic bands (i.e. LCD Soundsystem) to world renowned DJs (i.e. Adam Ten) - you can truly hear the diverse hold in the charts, old and new. 

Today, I will emphasize deeper indie sounds with influences from DEFLEE, Whitesquare, Jimi Jules, and Yamagucci (full track list below).

Now, he’s set out on his own journey to craft and mix sounds into electronic arrangements that tantalize the eardrums.

Beyond the names and places, let's breakdown the composition of Melodic House and Techno, separately.

Melodic House
	• Rhythms: Typically features a steady 4/4 beat structure, characteristic of house music.
	• Melodies: Incorporates rich, flowing melodies that are often uplifting and euphoric.
	• Instruments: Uses a mix of synthesizers, pianos, strings, and other harmonic instruments to create a layered, atmospheric sound.
	• Atmosphere: Often has an emotional, dreamy, or ethereal quality, creating a sense of journey or narrative in the music.
	• Vocals: Can include vocal tracks, but even instrumental tracks focus heavily on melody and atmosphere.

Melodic Techno
	• Rhythms: Also uses a 4/4 beat structure, but with a more driving, insistent, and repetitive rhythm compared to house.
	• Melodies: Similar to melodic house, melodic techno features strong, emotive melodies, but often with a darker, more brooding tone.
	• Instruments: Utilizes a variety of synthesizers, often with more emphasis on basslines and arpeggios.
	• Atmosphere: Creates a deep, immersive atmosphere, sometimes with a sense of tension or introspection.
	• Vocals: Less common than in melodic house, but can be used to enhance the emotional depth of the track.

Having had the pleasure of sharing the decks with this artist on several occasions, I can confidently say that this guest mix is a true reflection of their exceptional performance standards. 

Let's take a moment to get to know our guest a little better.

Miko Aguilar, also known as Qolaj (pronounced "collage"), is a Filipino DJ and electronic music producer based in San Diego, California. Known for his dynamic performances and has played at a variety of events across the San Diego area, including secret warehouse shows and desert raves.
As an active member of Dance Music Initiative and Angry Dog Collective, Qolaj is dedicated to fostering the growth and development of dance culture, starting in Southern California.

He recently achieved a significant milestone by winning Beatport’s Global Remix Challenge for The Blessed Madonna’s track with Kylie Minogue. In addition, his original tracks have been recognized by prominent record labels, including Warner Music (UK), California House Patrol (Los Angeles), and Angry Dog Records (San Diego). Beyond his solo work, he is also one half of the rock-electronica duo Umbra Maze, where he continues to explore the fusion of genres and push creative boundaries.
