PREMIERE - Boys' Shorts - New Era (Extended Vocal Mix) (Iptamenos Discos)

Here we go again! After reaching out 500 premieres just before our deserved summer break, the first step towards the 1.000th is given today: For the occasion, we had the privilege of reviewing master Diego Montiel’s (SXDNS194) contribution for the forthcoming VA of the still small but highly promising Antwerp-based label Under The Trees, whose curators spared no efforts to bring together a true dream team of acclaimed artists of the so-called Indie Dance/Dark Disco scene. Besides Diego, behold: Alex Aguayo, Andrea Acosta, Bonnie Spacey (SXDNS337) & Rem’s Martinez (SXDNS108), Mundo D, Parissior (SXDNS206), and Sylphomatic (SXDNS354), just to name a few, jumped in with high-quality themes and raised the bar of the compilation by turning it into one of the most solid releases of the year so far.

After appearing on Critical Monday and Side Up Works, his very own hub, Diego continues his 2023 journey by landing on the new Belgium imprint with his characteristic sonority and handling a darkness-infused and eye-shadowed cut that blends some of his most noticeable influences such as Post-Punk, New Wave, Gothic Rock, EBM, and Synthpop, resulting in a dance-floor-oriented piece that lives up to its name.

Taking us on a journey of neo-nostalgia for ZF003 is Northern UK artist REES. Over the past year, he has taken steps in sculpting his own distinct Italo-disco-esque style, taking influence from both his eclectic record collection and extensive touring experiences. The Panoramic Love EP is the culmination of those factors, making a nod to the 80s with a heavy focus on synths and drum workouts.

"This was an entertaining EP to make, the majority was me sitting down in my studio hitting record and jamming until something sat right. There wasn't a huge amount of gear involved just an Arturia Keylab MIDI keyboard, my VSTs and the occasional Roland TR-8" - REES 

Locking us into the dance floor right from the start is the EP's title track, Panoramic Love is a melody-filled electric stunner. Rising arpeggios and extended stabs are what keeps this track on a high-octane energy level. Erimus offers up a piano-led affair, slower but no less emotionally stirring once it reaches its crescendo in the second act. Heading into a more playful territory, Dorman Long delights listeners with bright synth leads, perfect for sun-drenched days. Closing out the release is A66, a melancholic yet hopeful cinematic sonic trek designed to keep feet moving until the morning comes.

Daniel Monaco has had a slew of impressive releases and what a better way to kick off Roam Recordings 2021 than by teaming up with compatriots Sauvage World to deliver Paninari on Acid. The title track delivers on the acid promise in a rugged yet smooth psychedelic grinder. The second original Tenerè brings the tempo down for a mysterious low slung expedition. The EP comes with two excellent remixes by Niv Ast and Fabrizio Mammarella. Niv Ast brings an acid house nostalgia with a driving rendition of the title track and Fabrizio Mammarella reworks Tenerè into electro acid territory. All together… a great start to the year.
