Mino Hanes as an entity has the goal to make high end music.

Making music that can compete with the big studios on a budget has its own set of challenges. 


So come with us on a typical studio session. 

We finish a full day of work on Friday and then we have negotiated cheap studio time between 12 

midnight and 8am.

We arrive at the studio at midnight. 

We often start by having something to eat or drink maybe a coffee or a redbull to get the juices 

flowing. 

At midnight it’s a weird time because you can sort of still be awake from the day or you are sleepy if 

you had a nap between finishing work and going to the studio. 

Often at the start we will just play each other some new music we have heard during the week or 

talk about song ideas. 

Then usually within the first hour we will have our song concept down and are starting to make the 

parts. 


We often start with piano or guitar and try and get that down pretty quick, “just get it recorded, we 

can tighten it up later”. 

We then hammer out some drum patterns and work on the structure of the song. 

Labels are important in the recording software because it is usually getting to about 2 or 3am by 

now. 

Once the structure is decided and organised in the software we then decide who will sing what parts. 

We then take some time alone to write listening to the beat on repeat through headphones. Usually 

one of us will chill in the studio while the other goes up into the loft or hangs in the vocal booth.

Usually within 30 – 45 minutes we are ready to record vocals. 

Before we record we usually take a walk around the block to discuss the direction of the song and 

The way the music we are making is going in a broader sense. Good ideas often come in these walks. 

Often the first signs of daylight are around. 

We then spend an hour or two recording vocals. 

It is usually between 4 – 6 am at this time, you need to be very careful of studio fever around this time. 

Studio fever is just a bit of a crazy feeling which can lead to doubt about the song or certain elements of the song. We sometimes get caught for up to an hour trying to fix one small detail which normally wouldn’t matter.

By 7 am it is time to start working on mixing. 

The next day we look at the mixing again and tweak it the way we like.
