It was June of their third year in junior high.
In the courtyard after the rain, hydrangeas swayed in gradients of blue and purple.

Beyond the window, she gazed at the scene.
The hospital room was the same as always.
But today, the air felt just a little different.

Knock, knock.

His rhythm was familiar.
Yet something about the presence behind the door made her heart stir.

“Hi. I brought another Pair Test for today.”

His smile was unchanged.
Side by side, they solved problems in quiet harmony.
Each answer, each shared laugh gently softened her heart.

But that day was different.

“Hey… can I tell you something?”

He paused, pen in hand, and looked at her with sudden seriousness.

“I’ve decided… I want to become a nurse.”

She held her breath.

“I want to work at this hospital.
…Because I’ve always hoped I could do something—by your side.”

His words trembled the air and pierced her chest.

Why?
She should’ve felt happy.
But tears welled up instead.
A small voice curled up deep inside her.

It’s not fair… You get to choose your future.
And I’m still stuck, unable to move.

She tried to smile.
But it came out just slightly crooked.

“That’s amazing. …A nurse, huh? I think it suits you.”

“Really? I hope I didn’t say something weird all of a sudden…”

“No, not at all.”
She said it, but inside, a storm of emotions swirled.

Am I really part of his future?
That question lodged itself in her throat.

☁️ Jealousy, Gently Held

She was jealous.
His resolve made her own stillness feel exposed.

But then she realized—
he had said, “I want to work for you.”
It wasn’t a phrase that pushed her away.
It was one that invited her forward.

He hadn’t left her behind.
He had said he wanted to bring her with him.

Jealousy is born from the loneliness of being left behind.
But right now, she was here.
Facing the same questions, in the same moment, with him.

“…I want to find a dream too.”

“Huh?”

“I want to start thinking—just a little—about my own ‘what’s next.’”

His eyes softened.
Like the colors of hydrangeas,
they held many emotions—gentle and kind.

As they wrote the final answer on the Pair Test,
something deep in her chest began to stir—just a little.
