Shortened Program Notes:
The Composer, Minoo Dixon, musically sketches out four different journal entries throughout this piece.

"I felt my eyes slowly opening to a train view of a passing scenery....and then I caught my first glimpse of Valencia.- 08/30/19 being the first quote and first section of the piece where Minoo mimics the feeling of being on a train and seeing passing views.

"The stars above the ocean couldn't stop shining" 09/17/19 is the second, more chorale-like section of the piece, where Minoo attempts to create an atmosphere that was like the one where he spent the night on the beach looking at the stars, for it to fade out like how he accidentally fell asleep on the beach.

Her feet began to blur..." 10/02/19 describes his first time seeing a Flamenco dance live in the city of Valencia. Through this he sketches a fast paced, Flamenco-inspired musical content. He has two players begin to clap like he saw in the performance.

“These memories will never fade." 12/20/19 is his last journal entry in Valencia, with him stating how impactful his time was in Valencia and how these memories he’s made will never be forgotten. He musically signals this section is coming by bringing back the beginning material at the end, and then beginning a fake fade out, as if the memories would begin to fade, but brings it right back abruptly as if to signal that these vivid memories will last forever within the confines of his journal entries and his dreams to return to the beloved city once again.

Sketches Of Valencia

In 2010, I took a summer trip to Costa Rica with my family, and stayed near the active Arenal Volcano. While there, I witnessed what would be one of the final eruptions of the volcano to date. Although Arenal has yet to erupt again, it is still active, occasionally rumbling and spitting smoke and promising of another explosion. Rather than depict the eruption I witnessed, I instead wrote this trio to capture the sense of anticipation that builds with each passing year. The piece begins quietly with distant rumbling and a tentative flute melody, before springing into a more rhythmically active interior section which nevertheless remains somewhat restrained. The piece ends as it began,  leaving the question of the impending eruption unanswered.
Volcán Arenal was commissioned by the 2022 Valencia International Performance Academy. It was premiered at the festival by the Valencia International Contemporary Ensemble (VICE)

Program Note:

The Mind is Like Water is a work for solo violin and percussion that explores the concept of meditation. The composition is comprised of a central theme and seven different variations that play on this idea of how the “waters” of our minds can often become clouded, and how peace can eventually be found through the chatter.
