With his second contribution to the Lost Palms catalogue, Swansea-based producer Tom Vernon takes us by the hand and leads us with him on a contemplative journey through Japan’s rural landscapes and their urban surroundings. 
 
Following the success of his debut EP released on Shall Not Fade’s sub-label Lost Palms, Tom Vernon returns with a blissed-out 5-tracker. Taking its name from the ancient temple district at the foot of the Japanese mountain, Minobu EP sees the emerging producer fuse field recordings with the stylistic tropes of house and broken beat, creating intricately woven tapestries imbued with memory and place. 
 
The wistfully amorphous opening track ‘Onjuku’ captures the stasis of a declining-population seaside town, taking its cue from the futile whine of the tsunami warning system that echoes daily through its empty streets. On ‘Minobu In The Train’, the EP discovers its pulse, translated into the shuffle of maracas, reverberating cymbals and a hypnotic piano melody that New Zealand brothers Chaos in the CBD would be proud of. With instrumental-sounding percussion, a modest, throbbing bassline and the ambient backdrop of Tokyo station, ‘Unexpected departure’ takes jazz-infused broken beat as its reference point, and sees the EP at its most transportive. Bringing things to a close are the complex drum workouts and acid-tinged melody of ‘Route E52’ and the more upbeat deep house track ‘Could This Be’ with low pass filtered funk-infused melody that oozes sex appeal.

Every morning he'd spot her at the bus stop, her red coat a tell tale sign that the day had officially started. He didn't know her, but he felt as if he did. For almost a year now he'd tried to get her to notice him; no words were exchanged but he was certain now that she knew who he was. There was something strangely bewitching about her presence, almost otherworldly. As if she'd just happened upon earth by accident...

Night Tales resident Kilig made a splash earlier this year with his debut release for Silver Bear Recordings, ‘Blue Coat, Red Dress’. As an appendix to the release - and to pledge his support to the elderly in our community, particularly during the pandemic - Kilig has invited some friends to contribute their own takes on his last EP, including reworks from Third Son, 1-800 Girls, Jacana People, Zaltsman, Kincaid, Louf & Wayward.

A message from Kilig: I want this release to highlight the mental impact that the current situation is having on the elderly in our communities. Not only are they the most vulnerable age group, but when you’re over 70 and being told to remain indoors for a long period of time, things can get really lonely. People rely heavily on those small day to day interactions, be that something as simple as getting a coffee or visiting family and friends. We’re raising money for ‘Age UK’ to help them provide regular contact and companionship for the people who need it most. A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to this remix EP, I am massively grateful!

US midwestern gem Ilana Bryne is back on Naive and, once again, she's got you covered for grade "A" contemplative-but-propulsive groovers, perfectly timed for these trying days. Like her debut EP "Low Earth Orbit" from last year, "Strange Adventure" layers sharp rhythms and playful touches with ethereal atmospheres and open spatiality. But stagnating she is not; her pristine production turned even brighter on this one, reaching a level of sonic and compositional finesse that has to be heard to be believed. 

Profound musical influences come through in this premiere's 'Used To Love T H E M', through echoes of Chicagoans like Glenn Underground, Gemini, and Boo Williams, tempered to perfection with the floaty atmospherics and chopped breaks of LTJ Bukem and other masters of liquid DNB. Delicate synth sequences illustrate loving dialogues between bass bin-busting subs and suspended Rhodes chords or airy pads, traveling through dynamic arrangements, with the odd moment of suspense done fresh.

The Melbourne underground house scene has a bright new voice in Loure. With his latest EP, Outta 106, dropping on his own label, Nothin Personal, Loure establishes himself as a radically inventive house musician who leans as much into neo-soul and free-form jazz as deep house. Tapping into a stunning, kinetic livewire of soul-infused, effusive house-jazz that incorporates live instrumentation, Loure’s music cuts straight to the heart and burrows itself there with warm, gentle ease.Across 6 gorgeous tracks, Loure displays his innate ear for swooning melodies and improvisatory instrumental jam-outs. On penultimate B-side track, “Heavyweight Sinner”, Loure dials down the sky-razing intensity of the previous 4 tracks and lets listeners be carried off on a more relaxing vibe. Coming off the heels of the drum’n’bass and sax-filled B-side opener, “The Walk Home”, this track fades in with a warping synth and delicate keys that then segue into a drum pattern and warbly bassline that would fit right at home on a Herbie Hancock record. This track comes as a welcome respite from the EP’s pervasive, soaring emotional catharsis. However, this is not to say the track feels lifeless or is any less impactful. Even as it gains momentum with a sublime bass-solo at its peak, the track never gets ahead of itself, perpetually keeping the listener in a tranquil state to luxuriate in. Loure’s music, and this track in particular, represents a subset of house music that transcends a merely vibe-setting idiom. Utilizing key elements of this style, Loure imbues this track with so much personality, dexterity, and soul, it feels essential in the context of the EP, and moreover, for anyone looking to explore a more jazz-inflected strain of house.

PREMIERE: Loure - Heavyweight Sinner

Melbourne’s 30/70 join forces with London and Australia’s South East elite beat-makers to deliver ‘Fluid Motion: Remixed’ on Rhythm Section International.

After the fruits of 2018’s luminous and lifted ‘Elevations’ iteration, we were keen to see how the rich, soulful and instrumental layers of last Summer’s ‘Fluid Motion’ LP could be reimagined by some of the key players in our mutual musical scenes. So, we invited a selection of our nearest and dearest to create their take on the track from the record that spoke to them most.

The ‘Fluid Motion: Remixed’ EP expands the album’s effortless eclecticism but offers energies more suited to the dancefloor that we’re missing oh so much. The first single comes from fellow label affiliates SAUL who kick things off with a bouncy breaks flip of N.Y.P., transforming it’s tender tones into a bright and lively party starter. It’s followed up by Peckham’s hazy house producers, Athlete Whippet, who inject ’Tempted’ with foot-stomping percussion and a moody electronic groove. We then move to the Southern Hemisphere with Close Counters, who serve up an ‘Impermanence’ rework that journeys from sweaty bruk stylings to a sunny club chug. Setwun amps up the heat of Allysha’s pacey lyrical performance in title track ‘Fluid Motion' with squelchy low-swinging synths, showcasing his signature fusion of dance and funk. From Sydney’s self-proclaimed ‘Soulstranaut’ to “the Dilla of Deptford” (STW), Maxwell Owin chops up ‘Tempted’ with a vigorous chasing tempo, twinkling glitches, a plunging bassy breakdown and seductive whispers to propel his gritty-city sonic aesthetic into a far-flung atmospheric nebula.

The Fluid Motion remix project sees the musical worlds of SE16 and Melbourne meet once again, proving it to be an alliance that just keeps on giving.

""Origins" is a collection of 6 pillars in exploratory electronic music from 6 different uprising producers and sound artists. A varied, yet cohesive collection of bright, meditative, and pulsating atmospheres.

The opening track, "Hornet", from Florida's Alien House uncovers otherworldly landscapes as they traverse through a haze of deep-space electro. Fluttering synths fill barren craters where shadow figures lurk in and out of light. Rising and rising with a strange, euphoric tension.

The elusive Joe Gigs follows suit with "Time Slip", a slow-rolling house arrangement that stutters underneath a chord phrase built for an endless sunrise. Faint vocals echo out as an introspective flute pattern comes into view. Finally met with a warm, slinky bass-line that tingles the spine.

Continuing on with the house grooves, Portland's Well Being gives us "Soft Mood", which is just that. Shiny, crisp percussive elements ride a groove that peaks and valleys in all the right ways. Gentle acid bass echoes out in radar ping patterns while swells of smooth synth and indistinct vocal chops fill the room.

Starting on the flipside we have a choice cut from Austin, TX stalwart, Corduroi. Deep, lush synths become the lifeblood of "Planet Cool" while a break-ish rhythm catapults us into orbit. Acid bass sequences drip like honey as the synths gain energy and form. Suddenly we find ourselves four on the floor as every element seamlessly lives as one.

Nestled in the middle of side B features "Cloud Mirror" from Akasha System. Hushed out toms and broken snares meet breathy, misty synths before the sub bass guides us into the next realm. Suddenly a hazy bell phrase comes into view followed by mysterious clicks and clacks. And of course, what A.S. song would be complete without a dreamy mallet section?

Couldn't think of a better finale than this epic journey of a track from LA's Pkacarl. "Holding Together" starts us off with an end-of-the-world piano scenario before being joined by what can only be described as an electric guitar oozing through the portals of an entire galaxy of synths and pedals. What really makes this song is the mind-crushing bass-line with an invincible spirit that may keep you dancing infinitely.
