With Zane Lowe pedestalling the first glimpse into Bensley’s diverse soundscape, ‘Fandango’ was a precursor for this forthcoming debut. ‘Next Generation’ is a bold move; with drum & bass being a genre which has certainly stood the test of time, newcomers have incredibly big shoes to fill. However, Bensley incorporates an innovative and incredibly intricate set of production skills to hold a title of his own.

But what can you expect from an artist who was signed after sending a single demo to revered label head Andy C. That’s despite having no previous releases or having any other music available to stream online. He was somewhat of a mystery.
‘Fandango’ was that track. And it was premiered as a world exclusive on leading tastemaker Radio1, which followed with support from the likes of Mistajam on 1xtra, as well as DJs on both Kiss and XFM.

Already demonstrating his widespread appeal with just one track, his air of mystery is now about to be broken. He’s definitely an anomaly; being only nineteen and having impressed so many people.

‘Next Generation’ is a 10-track journey through an impressively diverse soundscape. Whether it’s half-time breakdowns or the incorporation if cross genre-pollination it shows an astounding ability which will not go unrecognised.
From the opening bars of ‘Wildfire’, to the softly spoken pads and atmospheric note arpeggios of ‘Rain Dance’, then wrapped up by aptly named closing track ‘Aftermath’, there’s no denying Bensley’s masterful artistry.

Title-track ‘Next Generation’ leads you by the hand with snippets of humanistic sample, flowing in and out of its construct. It’s built upon by striking note progressions, a relaying of patterns which chop and change the mix. Carefully placed subs add impact, with emphasis given on each break, carrying the track forward down a steep drop with each slab of bass.

Drawing together a dizzying and fresh array of new sounds, this album indicates why Bensley is a forerunner within the new generation of music comers. Its representative of the fast paced technological setting of music production he grew up around; it also proves that Bensley is able to tap into dimensions which are often unheard of in other bodies of work.

Since Document One stormed onto Technique's roster, this production duo have set about marking out their very own niche in the D&B spectrum. Songwriters' musicality and an appreciation for multiple genres, while still keeping focus firmly on the dancefloor, makes for a powerful combination. Now, with this latest release, they're back to consolidate their status and draw together some more threads in their ongoing multi-form musical narrative.

“I Got a Fever” wastes no time in laying out the formula. A swing-time low-end perforates smoky jazz club ambience, with loose percussion holding down the beat. The bass morphs between upright plucks and synthetic sweeps to neatly underline Document One's approach of providing a slick modern twist on foundation sounds. As the track builds, a vocal sample signals its time for the bass and drum to tighten up and drop into a cowbell-led funkstepping ride. This is summer music, as much about fun and partying with a smile on your face as it is about serious musicianship.

Then there's a whole different take on the summertime vibe for “Follow Me”. Ethereal vocals float over crisp and punchy drums, accompanied by long liquid bass tones, delicate trumpet and laid-back keys. It's a gentle soulful roller... But then it's suddenly not that at all. Document One puncture the atmosphere like a sharp intake of breath and kick us with a boot made from filthy bass. And now the light and floating sounds from before just serve to accentuate the heavyweight drive of the rave engine this tune has become. When the dancefloor needs a kickstart, here's one to draw for.

So, Document One have proved once again that they not only understand the palette of sounds and textures offered by jazz, funk and soul, but they're also willing and able to twist them into their own paradigm. They make music to make musicians nod in appreciation, but to make everyone else rave hard.

Kihmera is a music producer, songwriter, audio engineer and DJ originally from Newcastle, UK and currently based in Leicester, UK. 

A music enthusiast from a young age, listening to anything he could and playing guitar and piano with his father, Kihmera's foray into DJing began in 1995 at the age of 14. 
At 16, he became obsessed with drum and bass, and he’s never looked back. After music college in Newcastle, he hooked up with Generation Dub (Original Sin & Sub Zero) and began running Newcastle's famous AREA51 Events. 

After a few years of running events, DJing and toying with production, Kihmera decided to concentrate all his efforts on producing and engineering music and made the move Leicester to join up with the Leicester stronghold of Original Sin, Sub Zero, Taxman, Jaydan, DJ SS and Supreme Being. 

Kihmera has had releases on Original Sin's label (under former artist alias Dan Blackout), Image Muzik. His debut release 'Storm (Your Game)' (Featured on Image Muzik's 'We Are Your Friends' LP) was supported by drum and bass's biggest players including Friction, Crissy Criss & Grooverider, and also got a substantial amount of on-line coverage thanks to Liquicity featuring the track on their YouTube Channel. 

He has featured as a guest on Friction's BBC Radio 1 show.
