This is a song that our fiddler Alexis Hyatt heard from an early 1960s recording by the folk and blues singer Barbara Dane. An original song by Dan Gabel. Inspired by Frank, who boxed in the US Air Force, smoked Lucky Strikes, and didn't shy away from barroom confrontation despite his relatively diminutive size. He liked to us the phrase "one time" as a way to add emphasis to what he was saying, kind of how other folks use "you know?" As in, " You'll never really know what happened, one time,  Dan." This is a song written by Mel Tillis, and Dan heard it first from Doc Watson, who recorded it on his "Southbound" album. It has been recorded by many artists, including a recent release from Billy Strings and Don Julin titled "Fiddle Tune X."

Traditional spiritual, from S. Georgia Islands. Originally recorded by Alan Lomax in 1930s, for "Deep River of Song: South Carolina," sung by Lillie Knox on that recording. Abigail Washburn recorded it recently and others have done great versions.
