午後の光が黒板にすべるころ、あおいとひよりは、向かい合って座っていた。

ふたりは双子。
顔も声も似ているけれど、まったく違うところもある。

あおいはよく話す。
ひよりはよく聞く。

そんなふたりの前に置かれた、今日のペアテストの課題。

『この学校の“ふたりで学ぶ”という文化を、まだ知らない誰かに伝えなさい。
方法は自由。言葉でも、音でも、動きでも。ふたりで一つのものをつくること。』

ひよりは、何も言わずにペンを持った。
言葉はまだ思いついていないけれど、なぜか不安ではなかった。

あおいは、声を出さずに笑った。

「今回はさ、しゃべらないでやってみようよ。」

ひよりは目をまるくして、でもすぐにうなずいた。
ふたりはそれぞれのノートを机の間に出して、そこに「対話」を始めた。

── ひよりのノートには、ひらがなでこう書かれていた。

『ねえ、ふたりでいると、こたえが浮かぶの、なんでだろうね。』

── あおいは、それに小さな丸をつけて返した。

『たぶん、ひとりの考えが、となりで跳ね返ってくるからだよ。』

── ひよりはまた書く。

『それって、鏡みたい？』

── あおいがうなずいて、こんなふうに結んだ。

『ううん、それよりもっとあたたかい。
わたしたちは、“おたがいの手紙”みたいだと思う。』

テストの終わりに、ふたりはノートのページを1枚ずつ切り取って、机の真ん中に重ねた。

先生が通りかかって、ふと聞いた。

「これが、ふたりの答え？」

あおいは笑って、うなずいた。

「はい。でも、声は出してないです。
今日は“ゆびさきで合図する日”って、ふたりで決めたから。」

先生は何も言わずに、そっとそのページに「◎」をつけた。

【おわりに】

あとで教室を出たふたりは、昇降口の前で並んで靴をはいた。
どちらからともなく、ほぼ同じタイミングで、右足から。

「今日のテスト、楽しかったね」

「うん、なんか…ふたりで日記書いたみたいだった」

ふたりの靴音が、廊下にカタカタ響いていった。
