American DJ/Producers Matt Enos and Enrique Negron, operating under the alias MEEN, have found that with a commitment to craft fueled by the fast-growing support from a burgeoning young and curious crowd, they've found the path to keeping creativity alive. They follow releases on CUFF, elrow music and several others with a standout maiden offering on Black Seven Music with their 'Gas' EP.

Opening with the title cut, 'Gas' is a hearty introduction to MEEN's pulsating groovy sonic signature. Centring around undulating drum sequences and fizzing hat grooves, the track's relentless tide of rippling percussion and tonal instrumentality make the perfect accomplice to driving sub-bass and catchy vocal constructions, carving out a high-tempo roller from the outset.

'Wipe Out' completes the EP with another solid showing of the duo's innate ability to churn out percussive-focused Tech House heaters en masse. Building around a core of terrace-ready rhythms, pulsating bass notes and ravey synth riffs, the track's onslaught of endless dancefloor energy playfully modulates to bring a captivating mix of weight, suspense, atmosphere and hard-hitting drops.

MEEN - Wipe Out [Preview]

Budding young artist Neil Parkes has been garnering lots of attention of late, following his collaborative EP alongside Adam Curtain on Metroline Limited picking up support from the likes of Jamie Jones, Hot Since 82 and Russ Yallop. Parkes has since gone on to unleash solo material via Mad Hatter White, Time Has Changed and Leftroom sub-label Left’d, and here we see Neil push on with some fresh material via the Leftroom Ltd imprint.

Kicking off proceedings is the original mix of title cut ‘Me & You’ from Neil Parkes, a tripped-out, melodious cut fuelled by bubbling synth melodies and crunchy digital drums. While a smooth low-end bass hook gradually unfolds over the tracks seven and a half minute duration, opening things up on a deep and hypnotic tip. Richy Ahmed’s take on ‘Me & You’ follows, seeing the Hot Creations artist reshape things with a more direct, dance floor focused feel, implementing stuttering vocal chops, chuggy bass tones and resonant synth licks.

Opening the latter half of the release is ‘Dixon’, which sees Parkes explore more stripped-back territories with shuffling percussion, ghostly synth lines and mind-bending brass textures. While closing cut ‘You Were’ tips things back to a more energetic feel with growling bass tones, spoken word vocals and evolving stab sequences.

Senso boss Oliver Huntemann first released the original version of Magnet in 2011 as a part of his Paranoia LP on Ideal Audio. A few years later, Brazil’s leading underground techno light Victor Ruiz reworked the track into an unofficial bootleg, which since had been rinsed by Ruiz, Huntemann and a slew of top DJs around the world. Such was its effect on the dance-floor, it’s now finally receiving an official release via Senso in a slightly updated version. The track itself is a lesson in tough, driving techno - unrelenting in its mission, yet infused with layers of subtlety and deeply funky beeps, squelches and effects. It’s a machine-funk monster, and it’s easy to see why the bootleg clocked up over 225,000 listens on Soundcloud.

Adam Beyer’s Drumcode juggernaut attracts more fans and critical plaudits with each passing year. Holding firm on its future facing ethos, techno’s number one label presents a new volume in its acclaimed A-Sides series with 20 prime tracks to signify its 20th anniversary. 

Such is the volume of quality music Adam Beyer receives throughout the course of the year, releasing all of it would be impossible. Enter the blue chip A-Sides series: a chance for the quality-obsessive label head to issue a collection of outstanding tracks that couldn’t fit in their regular EP release schedule. 

With an eye on future talent, as much as the label’s established roster of heavy-hitters, the compilation showcases the full breadth of Drumcode’s multifaceted techno sound, equal parts inspiring and functional. 

Led by the stealth techno funk of ‘Nine of You’, Beyer’s deft collaboration with Mark Reeve, the compilation takes in exciting highlights from big guns such as Alan Fitzpatrick, Dustin Zahn, Bart Skils, Pleasurekraft, Luca Agnelli, Jay Lumen, Kaiserdisco and Gary Beck. 

The rich vein of form displayed by emerging techno talent is similarly given prime position. Rising DJ/producer Boxia makes his Drumcode debut, fresh from a well-received warm up set for the crew at the hugely successful Junction 2 festival in London, while the likes of Enrico Sangiuliano, Juan Sanchez, Ian O’Donovan and Timmo also drop fire, establishing their credentials as some of the most promising talent breaking through the ranks in 2016. 

Reinforcing the global scope of the label, artists such as The Junkies from Toronto and Layton Giordani from New York, prove techno is winning a place in the heart of the new generation of artists coming out of North America.

<p>Alessandro makes his Phobiq debut and offers four tracks in his signature style. The title track sets the tone with its claustrophobic vibe and then unleashes mechanized stabs and a pulsating bassline which all lead to the commanding breakdown. &#8220;Walking On&#8221; continues in the same vein with the spotlight shifting to the tasty chord action, while discordant arpeggios intertwine with looped-out vocals. &#8220;Hold On&#8221; treads in further hypnotic territory, reinforced by shadowy electronics and a crackling rhythm section, and the EP ends with the haunting sensibilities and menacing synth riff of &#8220;Resource&#8221;.</p>

One could describe Mirco Caruso’s previous career with just three words: “haste makes waste”.  The club-musician with Italian roots’ approach to music is never contrived - nor does he care for exclusive hype or shallow bandwagoning. Mirco Caruso’s career is embossed by a gravitas that has consistently and continuously led him to the music that reflects his passion the most.
The steep rise that started with his first tech house release in 2014 - and was followed by broad international support and gigs around the world - suddenly came to a halt in 2020 when Covid hit.
Yet, against all odds, this marks the beginning of Caruso’s musical and artistic transition. After struggling with finding new inspiration and creativity amidst a world turned upside down, passion finally was reignited after visiting a concert that would inspire a profound change. A change that has ultimately resulted in his newly formed moniker «MICA» that represents an equally newly formed, inherently melodic and dreamy signature sound. One thing, though, remains unchanged: MICA’s impeccable flair for deeply touching productions and his incredible skill set in the studio. Surely, it won’t be long, until his music yet again finds its way back into the rotations of the biggest names in the industry.
