We Are Human

A couple of years ago, we wondered how we could make a library that could encapsulate the most important human emotions, those that drive us to act the way we do, what makes us human.
After some research, we discovered the Plutchik Wheel, which would summarize human emotions in a wheel, relating them by proximity and similarities.
We decided we could use this information to create a library that could help you create pieces aimed to make listeners feel such emotions.

'On The Road' describes a journey from a place of mystery to one of happy release and contentment. Several pathways present themselves at first, and these melodies coalesce gradually and finally come together in a joyous outburst in the final section. It represents the progression and development that we find ourselves in the midst of at many times throughout our lives, most especially during this difficult time. We know that, despite the several pathways down which we might go from here, we will eventually find ourselves in a place where we can feel safe and relaxed again, a brighter future. Things will not be the same, but we will be all the stronger for it.

On The Road

I don't know what will happen in a year's time.

The numbers I see are constantly worrying, and every day I turn on the news, it's more of the grim reality being faced right now. There are people who have lost everything - family, friends, loved ones, income, shelter...

But every now and then, I'll see a story about how someone got through. About how a family began to adjust to their new way of life. How people are coming through for others, doing what they can't do for themselves for whatever reason. And in a time where I would normally think the worst, things like this give me hope. 

My dad and I were hit by the virus. The outpouring of love and well wishes was overwhelming. And though we made it out and beat this thing, many others didn't. It is a constant reminder to do what I can for others. And it's honestly inspiring to see the lengths people would go for total strangers. 

I don't know what will happen in a year. But for the first time in a really long time, I feel hopeful again. We will mourn, despair, lick our wounds. But when we're done, we'll rise up again. We'll take on the next wave, and we will come out of this stronger. 

As musicians, artists, composers - people who create - I feel there is a duty to be fulfilled. We create not just to entertain, but to give others something to latch onto. You'd be surprised just how much a piece of music can change someone's life, give them hope. And in a time like this, we can help make that hope stronger.

And a thank you to Sonixinema for putting on this opportunity. This inspired me to start creating again. And to all the creators out there: You are not alone, either. Let's keep doing what we do.)

Impedance, an entirely instrumental album spanning 4 sides, contains powerful rhythmic sequences, heart beating frequencies and hypnotic loops that are paradoxically encapsulated in carefully crafted compositions which are full of secret passages and hidden doors. Kalancea's work creates ungraspable sonic experiences, which take us over, immersing us in powerful and mind altering soundscapes. 

There's no quick payoff on Impedance. This is the sound of new, patient electronic music full of depth and substance. 

Alina Kalancea is a Romanian sound artist and composer based in Modena, Italy. She has studied sound design and synthesis with Enrico Cosimi and collaborated with producer Alex Gamez, and artists Julia Kent and Raven Bush.
