arbitrary presents Terrain Vague – the debut album of Danish group MESMER.

The album is a series of (deconstructed) live-recordings taken from three live concerts. The sounds on this record are taken from two years’ worth of sound research and creative outbursts with inspiration from field trips to the outskirts of Copenhagen. Intrigued by the auditive landscapes of places where nature and culture meet and challenge each other.

Listening to the field-recordings led MESMER to interpret the moods, musical qualities, and inherent energy of the sounds from these areas. Thus, creating melodies, harmonies and rhythmical structures that, together with the field recordings, paved the way for this album.

MESMER consists of the three musicians & composers Emil Jensen, Victor Dybbroe and Anders Filipsen, who have been creating music together over the last 15 years in various groups. MESMER is fascinated by how sound (and its absence) influences us as people and how the different natural and cultural environments create different musical scenarios.

Point of Memory "Void Pusher" 2xLP/tape/CD
Void Pusher is acoustic computer music; combining digital cut ups and
live ambient noise with raw organic qualities. Inaudible super-bass
frequencies pumping through a room filled with acoustic instruments
and electric guitars set to quaver and rumble sympathetically. Then
record the result; a cacophony of resounding snares, harmonizing
drones and the subtle rattle of shakers, bells and tambourines. Most
of the time you can't hear the bass, just the reactions to it.
Sometimes the bass didn't create any rattle at all. By passing the
source sounds through amplifiers at their original frequencies and
mixing them with their reactive acoustic counterparts, each moment
assumes its own physical logic, a sense of movement and consequence,
accidentally adhering to Newton's third law of motion: for each
action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

The intention behind this project was to create an album that, despite
undergoing extensive manipulation, emanates a sense of human warmth
and soul. All the source sounds were recorded live or processed
through reamplification and manipulated live in a studio setting
before being edited at home. The recording sessions took place during
spring, summer, winter, and fall, capturing a broad spectrum of moods
without deliberately seeking catharsis. The aim was to remain
emotionally open and avoid excessive direction, in a superstitious
attempt to capture something of the human condition writ large.
Rather than pursuing personal emotional release, the goal was to
embrace the human experience more generally and avoid individual
emotional states. The logic is that creating music that resonates with
universal feelings and sentiments is more challenging than producing
work that is solely introspective and self-referential. In this way,
the artist sought to be a conduit of the human condition rather than a
"writer." In both method and aspiration, the artist seeks to listen
for what is already transpiring within us, between us, around us,
rather than risk drowning it out with an idea of what should
be.

Se non fosse per la musica non so se sarei ancora qui a scrivere questa nota. Con musica però, intendo tutto quanto quello che è collegato alla mia carriera. La mia nuova famiglia, coloro che mi hanno tenuto vivo, la capacità di trasmettere le emozioni che sento tramite una DAW, la creatività.

Senza queste cose non sarei lo stesso Simone, come se non fosse per Arianna e per Jarianni non sarei Zimoh.

Partendo dal principio.. noi artisti non siamo fatti per essere chiusi in una cella. Per questo motivo la creatività è potente: potevo uscire dalle mura della mia vecchia casa, dai confini del paese o dall' atmosfera del pianeta solo con la mia immaginazione.
È questione di saper sfruttare le tue situazioni ed emozioni a tuo vantaggio. C'è chi racconta storie, c'è chi lascia che il programma diventi un' estensione delle braccia e della mente.
Mi sono dovuto adattare a tal punto che potessi fare entrambe le cose. 
Stavo uscendo di testa. Fortunatamente in passato ho deciso di tuffarmi in questa carriera.

If it were not for music, I don't know if I would still be here writing this note. By music though, I mean everything related to my career. My new family, those who have kept me alive, the ability to convey the emotions I feel through a DAW, creativity.

Without these things I would not be the same Simone, just as if it were not for Arianna and Jarianni I would not be Zimoh.

Starting from the beginning-we artists are not meant to be locked in a cell. That is why creativity is powerful: I could get out of the walls of my old house, the boundaries of the country or the 'atmosphere of the planet just with my imagination.
It's a matter of knowing how to use your situations and emotions to your advantage. Some people tell stories, some people let the program become an 'extension of your arms and mind.
I had to adapt so much that I could do both.
I was going out of my mind. Fortunately in the past I decided to dive into this career.

His fierce improvisational approach strips away the raw textural make up of this iconic acoustic instrument, rendering a complex timbral transformation of its sound and a complete obliteration of the listeners own understanding of the sonic potential of the contrabass. Zach’s promising release for XKatedral, “Tasked”, is a brutal harnessing of pyschoacoustic rhythms and microtonality through the minimal instrumentation of contrabass and feedback.
