Mikal is a producer who has made a name for himself by making stand out drum & bass tracks that have caught the attention of DJs and listeners alike, he has released on a multitude of labels but it is Metalheadz that are releasing his debut album.
The album is called ‘Wilderness’ and it was very much worth the wait. A no nonsense statement of intent from the Bristol based produced who has been quietly working away in his studio and is now ready to show the world his work, collaborations on the album come from Chimpo, Xtrah, Break, RIOT and Sophie Barker. 
The sound of the album is streamlined with a focus on low end sonic frequencies. It takes the fundamentals of jungle but none of the clichés; the execution is firmly rooted in 2016. 
Goldie has the last word: “When I signed him I knew the potential he had in him – this album is the full realisation of that potential. He’s worked very hard at perfecting his craft and I’m very happy to hear it. His inversion of DnB culture has always excited me, the dub element is something that resonates with me as a missing part to the puzzle in the Headz camp.”

The cover art proudly proclaims Technique's Summer 2016 album to be “100% Drum and Bass”. You might be forgiven for thinking that begs more questions that it answers. There's a huge breadth and versatility encompassed within the genre. So, you're left asking, what particular flavour of D&B are we talking about? Well, to answer your query, pretty much all of them.

Across thirty-seven tracks, Drumsound and Bassline Smith have assembled a cross-section of D&B that only has one thing in common: that summertime vibe. The label bosses themselves roll through with the fluid jungle of the Solah-laced “Cover Our Eyes”, the no-holds-barred funk of “Rise of the Black Panther” and their epic dubwise collaboration with Digital, “First World Problem”.

And then there are the big name cameos from artists not normally seen under the Technique banner. Brookes Brothers and Danny Byrd team up with the uplifting drive of “Climb High”, matched in hands-in-the-air power by the euphoric piano of The Prototypes' “Don't Let Me Go”. J Majik recruits 78° and Louie Cabrera for “Day I Left” and “Idcomercial” respectively. And the mighty DJ SS drops an emotively claustrophobic killer in the form of “Expression”.

Of course, the regular regiment of Technique soldiers are present and correct too. Tantrum Desire delivers the tech atmospherics of “Tesoro”, while Kronology subverts the big-room sound with the unpredictable twists and turns of “Everyday”. L Plus backs up rumbling bass and popping beats with entwined chord patterns in “Invincible”. Plus Document One show two different sides to their character, with the jazzfunk vibe of “Klaxon” and the paranoid sci-fi of “Say What”.

And we're nowhere near covering everything this album has to offer. From the jungle tear-out of Brian Brainstorm's “Badman Selector” to the minimal magic of Oder's “Mesmerize”, via the liquid purity of Salaryman's “He Knows”, this is a journey that needs to be experienced. Any selection that takes you straight from Fade's “Disco Ball” into Conspire's “Glare of Brass” then to Salaryman's “Synthesized Melancholia” is making a statement about the strength in depth of the D&B genre right now.

It's all here. This is the whole summertime drum and bass experience cut up into thirty-seven expertly-formed slices which, taken together, represent the full spectrum of what the scene has to offer. It's as simple as that.

We've barely recovered from the sun-scorched assault of Technique's Summer 2016 album, and yet, already, there's more Drumsound & Bassline Smith material for us to get our ears around. Proving they've got too much fire for one label to contain, their recent excursions on Playaz and Function Records have been setting raves alight, and now they're back on their home turf. So, what have the Technique bosses cooked up for us this time?

First on the menu is “I'm Gone”. And this one isn't just a Tune with a capital T, it's also a Song with a capital S. Bully hasn't just provided a singalong hook, but a fully structured lyric which drives the track just as much as the relentless bassline. From the lighters-up intro through to the soar of the build to the solar-plexus strike of the drop, this is going to deliver everywhere from festival main stages to early-hours after-parties. No watering-down, no gentle chaser, just a neat shot of pure vocal drum and bass.

And then it's time to handle “The Truth”. The original hit hard when it dropped at the end of last year, but now Drumsound & Bassline Smith have unleashed the VIP and things have got even more serious. First of all, the intro has an extra level of cinematic sci-fi epicness, which perfectly sets us up for the additional brutality of the drop. The militantly staccato bass of the original is given a re-lick with more unpredictable twists and turns. This is one for selectors to pull out to ensure they keep the rave in the palm of their hand.

To put it simply, here are two dancefloor-wrecking heavyweight pieces from the ever-prolific DBS team. To put it even simpler, it's Drumsound & Bassline Smith, so what did you expect?
