Across a varied back catalogue, Mr. Mitch’s Gobstopper imprint has primarily operated under the loose classification of Grime but has consistently tested its boundaries sufficiently in order to steer it clear of any real pigeon-holing. Previous releases have come from Social State, Bloom, Strict Face and Mr. Mitch himself and throughout, Gobstopper has remained a platform for talented oddballs to experiment to meritorious effect. 

Next in line is another auspicious talent from London: Tarquin. Having garnered support from the likes of Plastician and Mickey Pearce and having had tracks aired on Rinse and NTS, Tarquin steps up and marries with Gobstopper’s ethos in offering up 2 fantastically esoteric productions that meld elements from the gamut of UK Bass music with a degree of sweet melody that lends them perfectly to the changing of the seasons. 

‘Kid U’ kicks things off and uses pitch and envelope experimentation to layer darting vocal samples with whips, clangs and plucked strings that work together to build an allaying yet challenging recording. ‘Lost My Marbles’ then gets off to a pacy start. Claps on the 1, choked hats and an urgent synth tone rattle towards a plunge into halftime before discordant tones and nifty sampling decorate a baffling concoction that caps off another coup for Gobstopper and a fine addition to the catalogue.

The next release on Terror Danjah’s Hardrive label is 'Grove EP' from producer D.O.K. Part of the legendary grime crew Aftershock - past and present members include Tinie Tempah, Bruza and Ms. Bratt – D.O.K’s new offering is a masterclass in musical murkery. The four instrumentals take a trip down Grime’s 140bpm memory lane, while reimagining the future of the genre. “I made Grove awhile back and it was getting a good response at the grime raves and on specialist radio,” D.O.K tells i-D. 'Cherry Bomb' opens with classic eskimo Korg stabs and Street Fighter-esque samples, while 'Kaboom' boasts screwface giving bass and ice cold sirens. “I made the tracks originally for Mode FM's Beat Boss 2. What gets us coming back to grime every time is its sense of melody. When rhythm or timbre are the pursuit of much dance music, melody can be swamped, or indeed purposefully neglected in favour of different, more functional elements of music. Grime functions differently in this way, it’s one of the few dance genres that is made with an MC in mind; it wasn’t made to move bodies the weekend long in Berghain. The aching, melancholic melodies of Ruff Sqwad’s 'Anna’ and ‘Functions on the Low’, Rebound X’s ‘Rhythm 'n' Gash’ or Kamikaze's ‘Ghetto Kyote’ bleed into the mind, dwelling in its coldest corners. As Ruff Sqwad's Dirty Danger says, "no one else knew how to put melodies in such dark music." Spooky invades the melody receptors in a similar manner, his method, however, is attrition warfare rather than seductive gloominess. His tracks are assaults on the body, templated meditations on rhythm and melody, on the pure and simple power of repetition and a restrained sonic palette.
