Misfit stars formed in the period following the co-creators of rock/funk/alt band Twist Off Irony's decision to transition to a temporary duo. DJ Carothers and Gary Branscum concluded after many years of playing with a plethora of sorted musicians, that they wrote better songs and more frequently working as a duo rather then with a full band. This streamlined approach is in motion. The first thing that is evident from from start is the somewhat timeless feel and groove of the songs, yet it somehow maintains a unique fingerprint that doesn't quite sound like anything else. This is due in part to the refreshing breath of air that are Gary's dynamic vocal performances. While his range is impressive and tone has a certain Jim Morrison-esque quality, Gary maintains that his use of effective lyrical storytelling and careful note selection is a process that he holds to with uncompromising standards. If there is a melody to be dug out, he will get his gloves on, grab a shovel, and get to the bottom of it, or get a ton of blisters on the way down. The groove of these songs relies on the impeccable rhythm guitar playing of DJ. While the man can shred, (he sported a school boy smile while having and opportunity to learn from and jam with some greats such as John5, Dean Deleo, and Adam Jones) its his seemingly unending wealth of new and interesting guitar rhythms that pave the way for these organic tunes. DJ is always looking for a fresh take on simplicity. He certainly doesn't need anything more than a les Paul and a clean tone tone on a Marshall half stack, but one couldn't tell that by looking at his small city-sized pedal bored.
