“We are the epitome of ‘working class rap,’ so doing this has to take patience, saving, perseverance and hard work.”

That’s the message of Tef Wesley, who with fellow DMV-based producer Grussle shares one of this year’s most cohesive, refreshing, and well-crafted projects so far. 'Pens & Needles' is just as blue-collar as it is gripping, and fans of rap will surely be singing its praises once they listen.

The duo first met in 2009 and developed a close working relationship that eventually spawned the ten tracks heard on this album. Tef admits that handing over production duties to someone as talented as Grussle allowed him to concentrate on his rapping, which is evident across 'Pens & Needles.' He sounds inspired, hungry, and focused, while Grussle does his thing behind the boards. “I just aim to re­create and share that same energy that made me a fan of this music way back when,” he says, noting influences such as J Dilla, Madlib, The Alchemist, and other greats.

You can hear that on brassy bangers like “We Taking Everything” and “Gametime,” both of which shake with horns, strings, and heavy drums. The latter is a real source of pride for the duo, too, as it was remixed for use by the Maryland Terrapins’ football and basketball teams. Elsewhere, Grussle gets grimy to match Tef’s raw raps on the single, “F.T.S.,” while the two blend nostalgia and soul on the insightful “Timeless.” There are also nods to the legendary Boogie Down Productions on the chilling “It’s a Suicide” before they up the ante on “RX.”

Everything comes full circle on melodic closer, “The Last Note,” a track that dives into his past while also looking forward. That’s because Tef gets extra-real, dishing out bars about depression, loss, and coming to terms with reality over Grussle’s emotional backdrop. It’s one of the most compelling cuts on 'Pens & Needles,' and the perfect way to close a damn-good album.

Since 2004, the team at Leedz Edutainment has put on for Hip-Hop from across the map. Whether it’s an up-and-coming cat from the New England area or a legendary emcee, Leedz’ placement as a top-tier promotion crew is well-known. And their new compilation, Eastern Standard, proves exactly that as it pulls together a variety of dope Hip-Hop acts with roots on the East Coast.

It’s only fitting, then, that the project’s lead single is “The East Coast,” a hard-nosed head-nodder from Philadelphia native and renown Nerdcore rapper, Mega Ran. While he’s well known for his upbeat disposition on social media and more narrative-heavy joints, Ran can go toe-to-toe with the grittier spitters, too. 

At least, that’s what he brings on this slapper produced by Boston-based artist The Arcitype, with cuts accompanied by DJ Slipwax who works in some slick scratched vocals from The Roots’ Black Thought. “The East Coast” depicts a reality that Ran and plenty of others have experienced, from the fact that damn near “everybody can rock a mic/ and somehow 7 on 1 is the make up of a proper fight.”

Baltimore rapper M.I. and New Jersey producer DJ Cutt, aka Constant Deviants, released their fifth studio album "Omerta" digitally on June 28th through Six2Six Records.

It is being distributed worldwide on CD and vinyl formats by Fatbeats, and is due in stores from next week.

They have just released their third single from the album.  "Reign Storms" was written in the aftermath of the death of Freddie Gray at the hands of Baltimore Police officers, all the more poignant now due to the well documented tragic events of recent weeks.

“Ya’ll Feel That”?  Insomnia is a bit*h…  While some suffer from it due to a persisting medical condition, creative types, those whose can’t keep their mind from racing due to the excessive thoughts and ideas that permeate (even in a dormant state) make it nearly impossible to unplug.  At least for the creative types outlets exist; consciously or unconsciously.  In Torii Wolf & DJ Premier’s case that’s creating dope music….

While Premier has previously collaborated with iconic female artists, in none of the aforementioned examples has the iconic producer/DJ entirely produced one of their projects. With a resume like Premier’s, it takes a lot to get his attention—and perhaps more importantly his respect. 

Enter Torii Wolf, a singer-songwriter and musician from Wantagh, New York who traded coasts–bouncing around West Coast cities and enhanced herself artistically; shunning categories, confinement, and convention.  Torii also just happens to be the first female artist to have her entire project (the forthcoming album entitled Flow Riiot) produced by Preemo.  “Torii has such a weird, wicked style,” Premier offers. “It’s just very left field—reminiscent of a Bjork or something like that. She is so unique and versatile; she writes, sings and is an accomplished guitarist and drummer.  But image-wise, there is no comparison. Subject-wise, Torii is in a whole different place.”

 “Shadows Crawl” is the only track I did not specifically create for Torii’s album” DJ Premier tells Vibe.  “I made it for Yuna’s new album, but she went for the second demo (which would go on to become the projects lead-single “Places To Go”).  When we finished recording Torii’s debut, Flow Riiot, I felt like we needed one more song and I played her this beat.  Torii wrote “Shadows Crawl” on the spot and cut the vocals.  I immediately knew that this should be the follow up to our first single “1st.” 

“Shadows Crawl” continues to display the musical symmetry and bond Torii developed with Premier; “Preem played me this beat he made for Yuna that she didn’t end up using and I instantly felt connected to it” Torii relayed to Vibe.  “I’ve never been a good sleeper, I sleep in tiny intervals, if at all, and when I do I alk in my sleep.  It’s such a vulnerable place, to be verbally expressive and not know what could creep out of your subconscious.  I love Preem’s vibe on this record, it brings me to that “Eldritch Place” (wondrous and curious places).  Performing “Shadows Crawl” together live has been unreal.” 

A hip-hop king who has a habit of contributing and producing historic projects behind the boards, mixed with Torii Wolf’s full clip of moods, range, and vast musical talent. What’s not to like?  Torii and Premier’s collaborative union bum-rushes the walls of genre, age, and expectations to let the world know there’s a Flow Riiot going on.

A vintage look at life through laid back tone and sepia soundscapes, Lexington, Kentucky based MC Allen Poe and Nigerian born/Montreal based producer Teck Zilla team up for the new EP "Light Bulb Over My Head While I'm Thinking." Littered across the beats are snippets from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's speech about the conscious mind, which is the entry point for Poe to touch off his various thoughts about...well, thought. From inner reflections on what to pass along to his children to musings about being socially awkward, the objective is to explore that caricature "light bulb" over one's head while mid-thought. As philosophically charged as as it sounds, AP and Teck carry a light tone and relaxed vibe throughout. Featured artists are Nashville's Jung Youth, Queens MC/Producer Hannibal King and Nigerian singer Maka.
