leon was one of four members of the public i approached. he was asked to speak, off the cuff in front of an audience, about an object of importance. he chose a photograph of a ship. i stipulated he should talk naturally, not have memorised a text, nor work from notes. i improvised a live soundtrack as he spoke, using bowed and plucked electric guitar and field recordings. leon comes on stage at 2'15". recorded in performance.

CONTINUOUS REFERENCE   Scattered to the four winds, sound is processed indefinitely. Slight fuzziness on the screen is in fact a charcoal drawing, no different from how you breathe. The belly needs to be satisfied, nature is never complete. All things have life and emptiness, so poetry will never die. And one could go on from there, creating new punctuation, reinventing devotion and dogmas. You're a colourist whether or not you paint or draw. A flawless smile, fields of autumn flowers, the endurance of imagination: no revision is possible. The alternative is frightening.

I am a musician, sound artist, composer and photographer living in Devon, UK. I mix improvising and composing to produce music and soundscapes for live performances with film, theatre, dance, art, place. I perform across the UK, in mainland Europe, Scandinavia and in the USA. For the past 30 years I have collaborated with both well-known, and unknown, musicians. I particularly enjoy the inspirational cut and thrust of working with so-called "non-musicians": people with profound disabilities, asylum seekers, those in prisons, psychiatric units, and other often marginalised communities. I make music with blown, plucked, bowed, beaten and spun instruments, electronic devices, field recordings, everyday objects, or anything to hand. At the heart of my work is a belief in the transformational qualities of music-making for all, and a commitment to the idea of collaboration.
