Missing Tapes Mix Series

For the month of October, Black Techno Matters will be in residence once again to shine the spotlight on 8 brilliant DJs and producers from around the country that represent the sound and mission of the movement: to reclaim techno as a manifestation of Black expression in a society that has oppressed it by creating spaces, both virtual and IRL, that celebrate the black roots of techno. An assertion and a reminder that Techno IS Black. This week, we begin with two stellar sets from Oakland's Bastiengoat bringing the hard techno to warm up, and BTM founder B_X_R_N_X_R_D taking care of the second hour with a session full of originals and exclusives!

Sónar Festival - Meritxell de Soto - 27 May 2024

This mix is an exploration into heavy percussion-driven music, which is something that has been influencing my production process recently. The set blends tracks from different eras, scenes and genres, trying to create a cohesive piece that moves across different moods and BPMs but keeps always percussion as the central driving element. It is not a dancefloor oriented mix, but rather one which leverages the radio format to experiment with unexpected combinations and a wide range of tempos in ways that may not be possible to do in the club.

Missing Tapes 001 : CcC

Catu Diosis is up next with an hour of upbeat Ugandan music from kuduro and afro house to acholi. Catu Diosis is a Kampala based DJ and member of the Nyege Nyege collective and is currently based in Cologne. While on tour in Europe in March Uganda introduced travel restrictions in and out of the country but this very talented individual (who not only DJ's but also produces and is a professional dancer) has taken it in her stride and is doing a one year internship for Migrafrica in Germany while also running a DJ workshop locally called Dope Gal Africa to encourage Black and African women, a demographic who are currently under represented in the DJ world, to learn the craft. Massive thanks to Catu for sending us this wild mix.

Missing Tapes 003 : Catu Diosis

Next up in the mix series is multifaceted artist Astrid Gnosis. Astrid was the last DJ to play at our party at La Cheetah Club, Glasgow pre lockdown and had quite the effect on the crowd who basically ripped the booth apart while dancing so hard. The Valencian has great affection for Scotland and Scottish comedian Limmy in particular who's responsible for the vocal sample 'Gnosis' that features throughout the mix. Expect pure hardcore power!

Missing Tapes 004 comes from none other than Italian born and Berlin based, Madalba. The Buttons DJ / co-organiser is know for long sets, always playing vinyl and impeccable selections. Missing Tapes 005 sees Jasmine Infiniti bring her wild and intense style to the mix series. Jasmine was born in the Bronx, New York and grew up in the ballroom scene. Her DJ roots lay in Oakland, California where she and friends started the party and now label 'New World Dysorder' that centres trans creatives, performers, and musicians. Jasmine also released an album of absolute fire 'BXTCH SLÄP' earlier this year so be sure to check that out on Bandcamp. Big thanks to Jasmine for sending us this mix.
