Seven is a magical number that is associated with synchronicity, luck, introspection, spiritual awakening, and the desire for a deeper understanding of life. SEVN is derived from this number and is focused on organic, deep and progressive music. 2020 has been a breakout year for this artist, he has released on labels such as Kosa Records, Shango Records, Monada and Harabe just to name a few. He is also part owner of the Montreal-based event production company Hidden Garden.

Recent studies are showing that the human stress levels are dangerously increasing. But there is hope.

This week, a group of internationally well known scientists discovered a new species which is able to reduce stress with its electronic boy vibrations. They gave this highly rare species the name 𝒎𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘.
They also found out that electronic music can have the same effect on human beings. It's important to adjust it to the resting pulse, though.

So this musical experiment should prove that the special gift of 𝒎𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘, can be imitated.

Dr. Dorian Fecht has a prototype ready and his expectations are pretty promising.

On that sunny and hot day in August, Hekske - the little witch – suddenly felt the urge to collect flower seeds.  Also Falke – the 10-year old witch apprentice – felt the same and the girls immediately started to pick seeds from all corners of their home forest in Flanders, and they even asked some dunnocks and finches to go and search in the nearby fields and marshlands.  A couple of hours later, they had collected hundreds of seeds from dozens of different plant species.  The two girls meticulously packed the seeds in 2 pouches, which they put around their neck before taking off from a clearing.  They flew the whole day in Eastern direction over mountains and valleys, before the little witch sensed they had reached her destination on the bank of the mighty Dnieper River, where they were being welcomed by Mriya (Мрія), a twelve year-old witch whom Hekske had already met in February (see Witchtape #117).  
After a long welcome hug, Mriya explained that she was sad because this year there were - for no apparent reason - no flowers in the lowlands around the river, while there were lots of butterflies.  Then Hekske and Falke smiled at each other and showed their pouches which were brimful of flower seeds.  Мрія was speechless and moved to tears.  And just at that moment, witches were arriving through the mist from all directions, even from places as far away as the shores of the Baltic sea and the banks of the river Ob.  And they all carried a pouch of flower seeds.  After the initial excitement, they suddenly realized that the soil was bone-dry, so the seeds could not be sown.  But just when all the witches had lost hope, they heard the hum of an airplane in the distance.  Through the mist, they were unable to see what was approaching them, but the sound was way louder than from any plane they knew.  And then the huge airplane with 6 engines broke through the clouds with a deafening roar, straight over the heads of the witches.  Strangely, the plane split the low clouds and a path of blue sky opened up.  The witches looked at each other and decided to take off and follow the path in the sky, while throwing the flower seeds on the soil underneath them.  And when the path in the clouds closed again, raindrops started to fall.  The witches were soon soaked to the bone, but happy when they saw the flower seeds germinate and grow into a green carpet (helped by a ‘growth accelerator’ spell).  The next morning, all the flowers were blooming and the butterflies were frenetically drinking sweet nectar from the colorful flower carpet.  Mriya and all other witches, watched this spectacle in a cheerful mood, after which they went swimming in the mighty Dnieper River.  Dreams never die…

This episode includes an interview with Platypus founding member Chris Cutrone, who was interviewed by Johannes K. and Lisa on his article “The end of the Gilded Age: Discontents of the Second Industrial Revolution today”. This is the last 2,5 hours from my set at summer's End Festival that happened on 01. September 2018. I forgot to record the first half hour or so (also forgot to save the tracklist - sorry!). It was really nice to do this, and i hope to do the whole thing again. 

What thing?

The story goes like this: Two guys meet in a hut in the Black Forest mountains. They discover that they share a common passion for music and magical moments. They decide to start working towards a common goal: Creating magical moments full of music. 

Fast forward one and a half years and a number of club events. The two guys stand amidst a little festival of about 100, that they built from bamboo and light in the pouring rain the day before the actual sunny day of the event. Sleep deprived and exhausted they look at each other, and start laughing aloud at their stupid stubborn mania. 

Sometimes i wonder - and this goes also to all the DJs, producers and event organizers out there - that it is quite an excentric hobby to have. 

But it is fun. See you next year!

"The Island" Poolsession Vol. 1

Chasing slower music; not making many plans; not aiming to reach a specific concept; gently resuscitating a lo-fi aesthetics which served as the basis of his debut 'Devius Edits EP', the German producer tmpl (@tmplsound) delivers emotions and thoughts through dynamic digital/analog blends, field recordings and a singular sampling direction. 

The music standards have undoubtedly evolved throughout the decades, nevertheless, absent from the techniques, the 'home-recording' and 'do-it-yourself' approach has also followed the path. We should be aware that music, like love, is not a genuinely rational thought process. Then, working within a lower sound quality than the usual contemporary standards, tmpl's solo work is the type of rough sound that spread out a different meaning to a very careful detailed one, as a reminder of the human element. 

When speaking of sampling composition, 'Dorothy Yokota' is a mashup edit of parts of Dorothy Ashby‘s track 'For Some We Love' from 1970 and a beat loop from Susuma Yokota‘s track 'Saboten' from 1994. In 'Szabó‘s Dreams', tmpl sampled guitar parts of Gábor Szabó's track 'Fire Dance' from 1968, and onirically featured GATS who jammed on it with an analog synthesizer. Last but not least, 'wu.m.o' contains some tiny samples from 'Unknown Mortal Orchestra's track 'So Good At Being In Trouble' from 2013. For the credit he put all the artists as a hint in each track title. 

Blending world sounds, psychedellic rock and acid, rearranged and extended with a flutter vibe and, above all, towards simplicity, tmpl captured a rawer form of a musical idea and focused more in the samples wrapped on the percussive line than key parts or hooks to call them remixes. Based on the current perfect phonographic industry, the EP could echo as unpolished, amateurish, but its occasional inconsistency and tiny saturation mistakes are charismatic. Surrounded by purposeful fuzz and buzz, this is a handmade humble collage sound that strives to resound taped in someone's garage or basement. For some, sometimes sonic perfection is... boring.
