Sunny Ozuna, who formed his band, Sunny & The Sunliners, in the early 60’s, is a true legend in the history of not just Chicano music, but American music. Sunny “Mr. Brown Eyed Soul” Ozuna is highly regarded as one of the architects of the sweet soul sound that has been comped on countless “Lowrider Oldies” collections, and his music has been pouring out of 1964 Chevy Impalas since, well, 1964.
Side A’s “Should I Take You Home” is one of his flagship tunes that embodies everything that makes Sunny’s music so appealing. A mid tempo masterpiece that is as cool and swaggy as it is sweet and innocent. In his honeyed voice, that's equal parts Little Wille John and Frank Sinatra, Sunny tells the tale of young love and it’s inherent defiance with lines like “there’s no excuse that she would understand, so when I take you home hold me by the hand”. When we asked Sunny about the tune he described it as “a very young thing, a cute thing”. There is undoubtedly something equal parts nostalgic and romantic about a young man puffing his chest out to authority for the love of his girl. It’s this blend of doo wop styled lyrics, B side soul ballad aesthetic, and Tejano vibes that makes this one of the biggest Chicano penned low rider tunes out there.
Side B finds Sunny covering the Harvey Averne Classic “My Dream”. It’s another perfect example of the distinctive blend of Tejano music and American soul that makes Sunny & The Sunliners so unique.
To say we are obsessed with the music of Sunny & The Sunliners would be to put it lightly. We have been working on a proper reissue project for a few years now and the full compilation will be out in 2017.

Sunny & The Sunliners - Should I Take You Home - BC034-45 - Side A

In the mid 1960s, one of Missouri's premiere soul and funk outfits debuted under the name, Fabulous Elites. This 11-piece group first recorded at the legendary Damon studios and included the four Bedell brothers who would later help form the Kansas City Express. In a predominately white area where country music was the radio standard, the Kansas City Express literally broke the mold. While only one member hailed from Kansas City, the group stuck with its name, taking Springfield and the surrounding area by storm. This single, recorded at American Artists Studios, was the band's first and only 45. It became a local hit in the Springfield area. Their showmanship even caught the eye of a local friend who had ties to Stax records. The legendary Memphis-based label signed the Express, but the relationship was not to be. In an unfortunate twist of fate, Stax disbanded just four months after the Express became one of the last groups it ever signed.

A while back Pratt & Moody hit the global soul scene with their Stylart debut 7" "Lost Lost Lost", leaving many exclaiming the words "FIRME ROLA" on its tracks. Some even mistook it for a forgotten oldie. Now this vocal/guitar duo gets together with Cold Diamond & Mink for another dose of grade A soul music.

Not breaking the spell of tautology started with the first 45, "Words Words Words" picks up the tempo from ballad territory into the beat heavy group soul category. The pulsing drum track is laced with majestic horn riffs, tremolo guitar, penny arcade organ, and over everything hover the beautiful lyrics by Pratt and his mysterious harmony singers.

If the first single by Pratt and Moody left you yearning for more soul, this one should blow away the rest of your corporal existence.

Since exploding onto the scene with his debut 45, “Rosegold” and it’s anthemic follow-up, “I Don’t Care," Jason Joshua has built a dedicated following for his distinctive latin-soul sound and his notoriously titillating live performances. Following a string of homegrown Miami recordings with the Beholders on his own Mango Hill Records, Jason hopped the plane to Riverside to gather the Penrose Scholars for a session with his friend Bosco Mann, where he was eager to prove that just like a record, there’s more than one side to a man: “Language of Love” finds an ebullient Jayjo bubbling over an uptempo, guiro-laced latin-soul groove, while on the flip, “La Vida es Fría” slows to a dark crawl over which his Bataan-esque bilingual croons of cold-world sadness intertwine with mournful violins. But there is a glimmer of hope in the end as he enjoins us, We can work it out / If you know what I’m talking about...
