As you know, to celebrate my birthday every year, I always try to do my best to make some music & share it as a way to say thank you, but this particular project was a bit of a struggle. Originally I was going to make a sequel to "Excerpts From The SP1200" but unfortunately my SP1200 took a dump when I turned it on. My next resort was to plug up my MPC2000 & unfortunately as well, it's also buggin out; which means I have to get both of my drum machine samplers to get repaired (Forat, here I come). Plus I only started 2 weeks ago, which really didn't give me any time to really marinate because I had such a busy schedule. On top of that, just a few days before my birthday, I get sick & get some crazy rash on my hands. Yet, I wasn't going to let anything stop me for trying to get this done.


Of course I can always rely on my current way of doing production & use the Propellerhead Reason software but I wanted to really challenge myself. So what I did instead is was use Pro Tools as my way of making beats this time. No drum programming, playing keys & basslines; just straight chopping up, looping, layering samples from records, cut & paste style....basically, on some Raw Sh*t!! It was more tedious & time consuming than my other methods of doing beats, but I have to tell you, it was hella fun. I just listened to bunch a records, recorded it, sample, chop, & however the final product came out, mistakes & all, this is what you're listening to right now. No overthinking, just went with the flow. It was pretty liberating.


Anyways, as always, this is my way to celebrate another year on this planet & my humble way to say thank you to everyone that has directly or indirectly, supported, inspired, motivated me in one capacity or another. I am very thankful.

I am constantly thinking of different themes to build a mix around. With the completion of each mix I typically fall into a 2-3 week funk where I try to think of a new theme for my next mix. Following the Folger's Blends mix I was struggling to think of a new theme. Then, one day while doing a random google search I stumbled onto the above logo. At first glance, I thought the logo was straight dope. However, the logo became even cooler when I learned that it was the creation of my favorite t-shirt designer, Derek from Manifest Worldwide. Given that the saying behind the logo comes from a ATCQ song, I was originally intending to do a Tribe mix. However, since Tribe mixes are a dime a dozen I went in the direction of creating a mix that attempts to capture the jazzy vibe that groups like Tribe and Digable Planets spawned. As the title suggests, all songs on this mix incorporate jazz based samples. The track selection includes music from jazzy groups and producers such as A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, Diamond D, Black Moon, De La Soul, Madlib, No ID, Gang Starr, Showbiz & AG, Big L, The Roots, and Nas (I think that's all of them?). Half the fun of making this mix was doing the research to ensure that all songs maintained a jazz break. Some were no brainers, but other songs with jazz breaks were quite surprising. Jazz based samples have always given a special vibe to hip hop music so I hope this mix captures that magic. Thanks again to Derek at Manifest for inspiring the mix's theme.
