Four days ago, we capped off a season of parties that, at one point, we weren’t sure would ever happen. Mister Sunday was our first return to the dance floor after lockdown, and it remained, week in and week out, a source of joy and rejuvenation in the last six months’ roller coaster of reopening.

This mix was recorded at the finale of Mister Sunday’s outdoor season, with Nowadays founding resident DJs and Mister Sunday dons Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter tearing through rough-and-ready industrial, propulsive New York soulful house, bubbling big room techno, boisterous rave tracks, acid melters, Italo jams, jazz dance and all kinds of other cathartic sounds.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. Professionally a DJ, music producer and night club operator. More broadly a dad, husband, brother and son.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene?
A. Almost 20 years. I landed in NY in November 2003.

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. It contains tracks and songs from my main musical outlets for playing music to an audience - Planetarium, Mister Saturday Night and Mister Sunday. Emotionally it straddles the line between fear and hope.

In early 2009, Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter launched @mistersaturdaynight. The party formed the roots of what would eventually become the beloved nightspot @nowadaysnyc, a “by us, for us” club that’s become a community hub for NYC’s nightlifers. Following the release of a sprawling box-set to mark the party’s 15th anniversary, Harkin, Carter and a few of the compilation’s featured artists filled us in on what makes Mister Saturday Night so special.

With a remarkable fourteenth season of their Mister Sunday open air parties just around the corner, @mistersaturdaynight's @misterjustincarter shares with us a special excerpt from his NYD sunrise set at Nowadays back in January, pulling out some definitive house and disco classics with heartfelt nods to NYC's deep-rooted dance music history.

Q. What inspiration did you draw upon when recording this mix at Nowadays? How would you describe the feeling in the room that day, and is there a sound, or time/place in dance music history that connects all the different moments in one way or another?

A. I know Nowadays' indoor dance floor intimately, and this slot in particular, starting around 5am on New Year’s Day, is one I’ve played for the past four or five years, so I came in with a very specific idea of what to do.

I knew that the party would be in full-tilt New Year’s Eve energy and that I’d want to hold the pace but move into a more liminal space, so I played records that are propulsive but dreamy. Once I established that headspace, the sun started to rise, so there was a natural energy shift, and I leaned into that. I stopped mixing and played Loft-style for about thirty minutes. Letting records play from beginning to end, playing music with vocals and live instrumentation, it’s grounding, makes it feel like a house party, reminds us that we’re connected with each other. That felt important to me, knowing that the dance floor had been in a more driving mode for eight hours. After that interlude, I built it back up, because there was still like twenty hours to go!

In general, I’m piecing together a few elements in my sets these days: deep, soulful elements that first drew me in when I arrived in NYC in the late 90s; psychedelic, minimal music that was coming from Europe in the 00s, when I first started to DJ; and then that Loft thing I referenced above.

Q. Are there any records in the set that are especially close to your heart, or old favourites that you had been keeping up your sleeve for the right moment?

A. I hadn’t played my 45 of “Be There In the Morning” by Renee Geyer in years. (It’s a record I found on my first Australian tour in Melbourne, at Licorice Pie, back in 2015, actually!) Good sunrise record, obviously. “Will you be there in the morning?” Yes! Here I am!

Q. With the winter months in NYC now behind you, how are preparations coming along for the return of your legendary outdoor Mister Sunday parties? Will you and Eamon be planning to do anything different for your fourteenth year? And after doing it for so long now, how do you guys continue to keep yourselves inspired?

A. We purposefully try to keep Mister Sunday consistent. Of course we’re always digging for music, and we always invite a couple guests who’ve never played, so there’s something that feels fresh for every season. But the consistency that comes from having a weekly party that’s been happening for such a long time, it’s something we consciously try to maintain – it’s one of the main ingredients for the community that has developed around the party. No one has to wonder where the party will be this week, whether it’s happening this Sunday or not, etc. That said, we’re going to be throwing our 500th(!) party this season, and we’ll do something special to commemorate that.

Excited to share the recording of a 3hr set live from Waking Life festival in Portugal from earlier this summer. This set is one of my favorites of the year, full of ‘Mister’ anthems for a fresh audience and 2024 favorites that have been working a treat on home soil at Nowadays

Truth be told I hadn’t heard too much about the festival before receiving the invite to come play and so travelled to Portugal with an open mind and a managed expectation. What I experienced was one of the most fulfilling festival experiences I’ve ever had as a DJ or punter. There was joy, freedom, mischief and a sense of acceptance in the air which I quickly felt and rode as best I could for the next 3 hours. 

Major props to the folks working hard to produce and preserve a truly special vibe in a truly magical location.

This, of course, is the longstanding home of Rhythm Section, a party headed up by Bradley Zero. Rhythm Section is known for its loose, good-time vibes, a feeling that's mirrored in this wild, extended back-to-back session.

In January of 2009, Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin started Mister Saturday Night. At first, it was a party at a club, but after a few months, they forged a path that would make the Mister something more special, taking it into private homes and DIY spaces that allowed for deeper connections to music.

Almost a decade later, Mister Saturday Night has become an institution, spinning off the beloved all ages, all-walks-of-life Mister Sunday parties; starting Mister Saturday Night Records, the respected label that's put out milestone records from Anthony Naples, Denis Sulta (as Atlus), Dark Sky, Keita Sano, General Ludd, Gunnar Haslam and Nebraska; and opening Nowadays, their own space for dancing, listening, learning and making in-real-life human connections.

In the summer of 2017, Harkin and Carter are celebrating Mister 250, the 250th party under the Mister banner. For an outfit that's set up the venue from scratch for nearly every party in nearly thirty different spaces, it's a milestone worth celebrating. 

Mister Saturday Night: Then and Now is a selection of songs that have come to define the party – as well as some recent discoveries that reflect Eamon and Justin's ongoing commitment to unearthing and sharing the music they love. In addition to this digital stream, we've released a 3LP comp of many of the tunes herein.

On June 25th, 2017, we celebrated our 250th party ever with a fete called Mister 250. This is the last two hours and change from the booth, wall to wall with Mister classics and served with a cherry on top – a surprise performance from the Joubert Singers.

This year, while the world as a whole seemed crazier than it has in our lifetimes, in our little corner, it was more beautiful than ever. We continue to feel blessed by the community that surrounds Mister Sunday and Nowadays as a whole, and we continue to be pleasantly dumbfounded that we get to spend our lives immersed in music and creating spaces for people to come together.

Before we close the door on the year, we wanted to share a little more music with you. This is the last two hours from the booth at Contact in Tokyo on Sunday, November 3, 2019. The vibe was special, and the tunes were flowing. We hope you have as much fun listening as we did playing. Big love for now and 2020. Happy New Year.
