MTT - Paradise Edits

Here we have a delightful Premiere taken from the debut compilation from BS Radio; the Milan based party collective Burro Studio. Expertly curated by eclectic DJ's External Love; the compilation consists of eleven tracks hand-picked to reflect the spirit of warm summer nights by the sea. 'Paradise Lost' by Running Hot is an irreisistable mid-tempo balearic house groove; a touch of 80's style sprinkled across the production with it's crispy, punchy drums, soaring pads and gentle keys that combine for a heavenly ecstatic feeling. The light and space in the atmosphere entice you to let yourself go in the heat and dust by the sparkling sea.

About one year after our Vol. 2, clubs and dancing bars were closed again in France. This sad news made us decide to launch again our Edits series, slightly renaming it “Paradise edits”. Fortunately, the good contacts we made through the last year helped us pulling together this new compilation quite fast. First, we had the Brooklyn duo Fundido, part of Earth Beat crew, with whom we had been chatting for quite a while and talked many times about having an edit from then. Then, we asked Sputnik, a DJ from Moscow to join, as we were enchanted by his work for That’s A Steal and his release on Gop Tun records earlier this year. A few days later, Nicolas Kotowicz, another Russian artist, contacted us to share his edit and we thought he would be a perfect addition to the comp. Finally, Latane introduced us to Lloyd with a bunch of edits and we were very keen to include him too.
Here’s the result of their works and a few questions we asked them about their stories and their approach to edits.

Few months ago, we came across Souldade’s SoundCloud channel (@simon-de-forni)and we got caught up by a super nice edit of “Penelope” by Rodrigue. 

As our next vinyl release got delayed because of the lockdown in France, we decided together to publish one of his newest edits on our channel to promote his selector and editing skills. Two weeks ago, he sent us this excellent “Ain’t Like Reggae” edit that we are now sharing with you. We took the opportunity to ask him few questions about his background and this edit.

MTT: Hello Souldade, how are you? What are you up to these days?

Souldade: Hello MTT! I’m doing pretty good in my native South of France; nothing left to do but exercising outdoor, spending hours digging through the web (and incidentally doing some remote work)!
I think the upside of this quarantine is that DJs and selectors around the world get much more time to focus on their musical activities, and so do I. I regularly visit my peers’ great YouTube channels or SoundCloud profiles to give a listen to their latest mixes or uploads; I browse many other YT channels or Discogs pages to find new stuff to play (or edit); I even watch documentaries about the story of the genres I love – by the way I recommend the “Paris c’est l’Afrique” old docu series, recently uploaded on Pan African Music YT channel!
In brief, many projects come to my mind right now, hopefully I have time to start materializing them, and I look forward to going further when I’m back in Paris!

MTT: Can you tell us how you became a record collector? When did you start DJing?

Souldade: Vidal Benjamin explains it better than I do in an interview he gave to Record Magazine: “I discovered that all those house music tracks (…) were made out of disco samples. I thought isn’t it more interesting to discover the music of the origins, the disco (…)?” Besides house, I would only listen to American hip-hop as a young basketball player, and I started opening to black music when I discovered that many rap instrumentals would sample older soul, jazz or funk tracks.
So very naturally I joined the French “Chineurs des Origines” (CDO) in 2016, one of La Chinerie’s Facebook groups where members share overlooked tracks with the community. I eventually became admin, and my friendship with the whole team was born back then: Julien, to whom I’m particularly thankful for introducing me as an admin, Rémi, Norman and Simon, who are doing a truly outstanding work with their collective Bayetë, Baptiste, Jeanne, Elise and Hugo.
Both CDO and Make It Deep, which I also had the chance to join for a while, took selecting and DJing to another level for me. After putting all my musical activities aside as I started as a strategy consultant and saw my free time shrink, the passion eventually became to strong and I decided to breathe new life into my hobby, by launching my YouTube channel and upgrading my SoundCloud page, as an attempt to pass on to people the same emotions I can feel when I hear or dance to a track for the first time.

Last edit of our Lockdown Paradise edits Vol. 2 by Running Hot (@runninghotmusic).
Classy rework of a balearic house tune.
They first found this track a couple of years ago at a time when they were listening to a lot of Russian music and started working on an edit of it around that time, but it didn’t really go anywhere. This summer they decided to have another go at it, keeping the pop / catchy atmosphere of the tune and emphasizing the disco (even proto-house), in particular the piano solo part.
