Solitude

Song for Choral SATB and Optional Keyboard. A setting of Robert Burns' (1759-96) poem of the same title. Although a trifle enigmatic, the poem carries the yearning of a (young) man for the woman of his affection. The Alto line is given particular prominence. The 5/8 time signature (a favourite of mine) and the suggestion of syncopation in the melody provides a sense of striding over uneven moor where the poet cries out continually for "Phillis the Fair".
