I’m happy to present to you Evolution, the second episode of the Aurora series, which was recorded where I’ve been living for the past 10 years. Montréal has a very special place in my heart as it’s where my music career has started. It’s also where I’ve evolved from an accountant to a DJ / producer, following my true passion. This episode was recorded in that transitional hour from day to night, as a way to have continuity with the first installments. It allowed me to play a deeper and darker sound, one that has been my go-to when I first started djing, and one that stays relevant through time. I’m happy to present to you Transcendence, the third episode of the Aurora series, which was filmed at the top of Mount Sutton. I have an extremely close relationship with this mountain, having spent all of my winter weekends as a youth skiing the slopes, joining the ski club as a racer and later as a coach. It is a terrain and experience that has greatly inspired my musical productions. To me, mountains evoke something that is bigger than us, spiritually or physically and my music selection for this episode tried to reflect that transcendence. I hope my homage to this special place will resonate with you and make you fall in love with this place as much as I do.

I’m happy to present to you Passage, the fourth episode of the Aurora series, which was filmed at Domaine de l’Île Au Canot. The island is part of the Isle-aux-Grues Archipelago situated in the middle of the St-Lawrence Seaway. I’ve been visiting this mystical place with my family at every transitional season as a way to unwind and remind ourselves just how important it is to be more in tune with nature and the impact we have on it. The speed at which the weather can change around there and how quickly its habitat responds, deeply inspires my djing philosophy: the crowd is my weather, and I’m like the habitat, I constantly adapt. I hope you’ll enjoy this audio-visual journey and that we’ll see each other soon on the dancefloor, once this odd period of time will be passed us. After all, music cannot exist without being shared through human connection

I’ve composed that track in the spring of 2020, in the heat of the pandemic. At the time, my days consisted of daily hikes on the mountain and countless hours in the studio, constantly learning and growing as an artist, with almost no distractions. It allowed me to be more patient with the music writing process, and embrace its journey. I’m very pleased with how the song came to be and it’s been one of my go-to mid groover tracks in most of my sets. I truly hope it will resonate with you as much as it does with me.

Montrealer Mitch Oliver returns to Kindisch with a pair of hypnotic house rollers.

Mitch Oliver is at the heart of the ever-evolving melodic movement. The rising star is a DJ, producer and sound engineer respected for his blend of emotive grooves on the likes of Akbal Music, Seven Villas, When We Dip XYZ and Hoomidaas Records. He has previously released two singles on this label and now returns with his first full EP for the Berlin imprint. His deft touch in the studio and finely curated DJ sets have taken him across Canada, the US, and the Caribbean with performances at renowned events such as AIM Festival, Burning Man and SXM Festival. At home in Montreal, he runs his own Aurora events as a residency at Velvet and he was part of Guy Laliberté’s PY1 Nights.

Mitch opens up with vocalist MYRE for 'Alpine', a richly detailed track with subtle acoustic guitar licks and buttery smooth vocals. The spacious, patient groove builds with deft percussive details that heighten the alluring atmosphere of this classy late night gem.

Second track 'Mylus' is a collaboration with musician Nic Falardeau. It is another brilliantly organic track with seductive wood-block hits over frictionless deep house drums. Serene string sounds, yawning chords and soft shakers all pepper the perfect groove as you slowly but surely fall under its majestic and romantic spell.

These are two tender house tracks stuffed with heartfelt warmth.

Here is the recording of my very first set at StereoBar Montréal. 

It was an honour to have the opportunity to play in that room for the first time, especially since I was headlining the night. It was a long-time dream of mine to play there and the stars aligned for a very magical moment. I still have goosebumps just thinking about it.  

I’ve danced at that place plenty of times in my life, but experiencing it from the DJ’s perspective was something else. The crowd was so receptive, focused and in tune with the music, it felt like time stopped for a little. It’s definitely one of the most meaningful moments I ever lived. I’ve received so much great feedback from the night, it truly felt like we were all on a journey together and those are the kind of moments I do what I do for. 

Thanks to the whole team at StereoBar for welcoming me with such professionalism and know-how.

Here is the live recording of my set at this year’s Front Republic festival. 

That gig is definitely one of my highlights of this past Summer. Front Republic is such an incredible festival and at the heart of its success is its community. I still remember how responsive, attentive and passionate the crowd was during my set. It brings back such great memories and puts a smile on my face when I remember all the familiar faces and new ones I met during that day. The energy of the crowd during my set was phenomenal and even though I only had 1 hour and ½ to write a musical story, I found a way to play the unexpected and it was amazing. Two of my unreleased tracks are found in there, which will both be released early in 2023. I truly hope you’ll enjoy this musical journey as much as I enjoyed writing it.

A place that truly feels like (((home)))

A room that holds deep meaning for many of us and ignites wonder in those yet to experience it. A space where we can all be free, together. A vessel that uses vibrations to warp space and time. A temple where music comes alive.

It was an honour to play in this room for 9 hours, surrounded by the most incredible group of humans. Playing there has been a dream of mine for many years, and it stands as one of the most significant moments of my life. The stars aligned, the collective energy was truly beautiful, and I'm thrilled to share with you a portion (from 3 AM to 7:30 AM) of the soundtrack of that night.

A collaboration with my dear friend https://soundcloud.com/maaruo. The piece was named after a lake, near the cottage where I spent a lot of time in my childhood. It brings me such great memories.

Greatly inspired by nature, a lot of samples in this track were taken during hikes Marco and I did last spring near the lake.

Mitch Oliver & Maaruo - Vogel [Seven Villas]

The Aurora series is a very special project for me. It is a journey through time, which merges my past and present. The 4 part video series showcases performances in locations that are dear to my heart and that have shaped me as a human being and as an artist. Each location represents a different facet of my life and has heavily inspired my music direction. Today, I present you Origins, the audio recording of the first episode of the series, which was recorded/filmed where I grew up and where my parents still reside to this day. As this is the first edition, it was important for me to pick the location where everything started, where my roots are. Since I feel so grounded and comfortable when I set foot there, I decided to play a set exclusively containing my own productions, which is a first for me, so it’s extremely special to share it with you today.

Mitch Oliver: Aurora Series Part I - Origins

A track I hold close to my heart, called “Alleghanys” is now out on When We Dip’s label XYZ as part of its annual Blanche compilation alongside many talented artists. This musical piece was the first one I worked on when the pandemic started back in March of last year. I spent most of the first months of these rather odd times in the hills of Quebec and was deeply inspired by the time I spent outdoors on the mountain by my home. I named the track after one of my favourite ski runs there, which I spent a lot of my time on during that period. Nature and mountains have always been a very big inspiration for my music, but I rarely get inspired by the depth and detail I did for this one. While hiking up ‘Alleghanys’ on one of the nicest days of last spring, the main theme and emotions I wanted to get across on the song came to my mind and I immediately took my phone to record a voice memo detailing what the track would feel like. About a month later, the song was completed, and from that point on, I couldn’t even believe it had been composed by me, as if it had become a story of its own. That’s when I knew it would be a special one, and I truly hope you will feel the same when you get to hear it for the first time 🗻❤️🌲
