As we all made our way to the Malecón, Sabra said she was tired and wanted to return to the hotel. I offered to walk her back. Along the way, the skies released a deluge of warm rain down into the streets. The stones thundered. We stepped into an alcove, her body pressed against mine. Her red dress clung to her damp skin. She was electric against the blue. The rain paused and I picked her up, laughing, running, and leaping over the water puddles. She laughed and yelled, but I could not go far anyway. I sat her down and looked in her eyes, knowing, that she will never be mine. We returned to the hotel and I left again in search of my friends.

That first night I walked through the darkened streets of Nairobi, meandering my way through Upper Hill, slightly drunk and following the music. I found myself at the Rain Tree - or some place of a similar name. The music was loud and it smelled of whisky. Many years later, in coastal France, wandered the streets at night seeking the same. The lights were so bright. I had no sense of time. I only had the sounds to guide me.

As our taxi we turned down a dark and narrow street I looked over at Mallory. She looked at me too. In the safety of Brixton, South London, we both simultaneously thought of that night in Afghanistan when our cab driver started to leave the city with us and we feared we were getting kidnapped. I felt her hand tightened in mine.  I asked the driver if we are close to the concert hall, and he said it was just around the corner. Then like that same night in Sharenaw, we climbed out of the car, ducked inside, and danced the night away. BPM 122 A#Minor

In 2014 I survived a terrorist attack. My wife was home carrying our first child. Convinced my life was ending, I switched on my phone on and recorded what I believed to be my final moments.  That day has never left me.

July 2014

We never set out for a particular horizon, but marching along the trail, we continue to find ourselves on course. Sometimes the expected is the unexpected. Sometimes, it is all that seems right that seems too much. And so I began to draw. I varied the speed and strength of my marks. I curved quick lines and rendered others with delicate care. It is from the sound of my drawing that I began to craft another chapter. In the brilliance of her glow, we have more than pain, but hope.

As a young man, I was fascinated by Icarus, but I have come to see that myths are insufficient to truths. Truths are far more powerful. Truths are rare. They are beautiful. They reflect the sun’s light, dazzling us into blindness, yet it is not the sun that sends us plummeting earthward in consequence. We can do that all by ourselves. 

Perhaps our insistence to suffer is rooted in the senses - they delude us into chasing neurons that may or may not serve our interests. We are forever distracted by our own lives and slave to the incongruity of our minds, we are endlessly hungry for something more profound. Our feelings are the darkest of waters leaving us to swim in circles at night.

Such action is ill fated. Though we must build our own truths, breathe them, and consume them— we are quick to then cast them aside the moment their flavors fade. Somehow, still, caught in my own entanglements, I have learned. Do not work so hard in the shadows. Do not strive so much. Merely give, give freely, and when the carpet unfolds beneath the brightest of lights, do not hesitate to walk forward.

The world is merely a reflection. Do not try to bend the spoon.
