Earlier this year we brought you the news of an innovative new collaboration which pairs two producers with unique perspectives on sound design and music.

Prequel Tapes is best known for his noisy, disjointed approach to techno and the rougher drone inspired fringes of electronica and IDM. He has released music on the likes of Mannequin and R'COUP'D. 

Meanwhile, dBridge remains one of the most innovative figures in UK bass music culture having released cutting edge downtempo, jungle and drum 'n' bass over many decades for the likes of Creative Source, Exit Records and Metalheadz. 

Now the two have collaborated on a new EP for Midnight Shift, a record label which continues to connect generations of well versed music heads through its consistent release of high quality techno, bass and the weirder, heavier fringes of dance music. This new EP pairs two unique, creative minds. The result is a mutant hybrid showcasing the importance of collaboration and innovation. 

Following the release we asked kindly whether the pair might be up for recording a mix together, an alternative insight into their own collections and musical tapestry. The result is an old school mixtape, reel to reel vibes with integrity at its core.

Tilt Shift sits firmly left of center, a difficult-to-label square peg that unintentionally fails to fit a pigeonhole. Borrowing from the photography term, Tilt Shift refers to two different types of movement, a selective focus with a large depth of field used to control perception. This can be applied to our music policy, tilting the vertical axis resulting in a sharp area of focus without reducing the depth of field. The selective focus that can be achieved by both tilting and shifting movements, It's compelling because the effect is different from that which you may have become accustomed to. This movement is often used to avoid the convergence of parallel lines, or as we have come to think of it, it’s where the lines blur.

host of Szerdak events, founder of Tribalizm happenings… this is how he tries to add something to the cultural life of Gyor, Hungary. Playing some house, disco and everything in between, since 2015.

This mix was a bit darker, with some EBM / Dark Disco tracks. It was played at a party, co-organised by Kollektiva and Tribalizm, called Danse Macabre, as a warm-up at a venue called A BETON. Hope you enjoy it!

Johana, a DJ and graphic designer based in London, launched her career as part of Belgrade’s DJ duo Banda Panda, known for their unique style blending various genres into a dark yet vibrant mix. 

She has become integral to Belgrade's underground electronic scene, shaping its evolution by booking and promoting leftfield international artists and collectives who previously hadn't performed in Belgrade. Johana has curated several party series, notably F-Society, dedicated to showcasing local female electronic DJs and music producers. While she has performed at various venues and on radios in London, her current focus is exploring the realm of music production.

@prequeltapes is Marco Freivogel — a producer, DJ, and live performer who shared his story in the “Sound Mind” issue of Borshch published in 2019. On the 3rd of July, Marco’s latest album Ruin came out on Mannequin Records. In Prequel Tapes’ long-held view, “art should challenge, jar, and provoke. Offering the balance of what’s dark and disturbing to appreciate the beauty and the light.”
 
Prequel Tapes recorded his Borshch mix from his vinyl collection, with the magazine in mind all the time. For Marco, it’s connected to the feeling of the “Intrinsic” track from the new album. The mix is intense and gentle at the same time, it’s to listen to and fall into, repeat again, and discover new refinements each time.

After years of producing music, it was some old DAT recordings from my youth that were to kick start Prequel Tapes. Listening to those recordings was like a flight back into the past. Understanding these recordings was to realise why I do what I am doing.
Again a circle is closing. I find it´s very enjoyable to open and close all those circles. Time is relative.

The "Mix-en-stock" series is dedicated to leftfield electronic music and is curated by Canadian academic (and former Resident Advisor contributor) Stéphane Girard. He is the author—among other books dedicated to contemporary experimental French literature and Cultural Studies—of "Poétique du mixtape" (Les Éditions de Ta Mère, Montréal), a semiotic investigation of the artistic practices of DJs and of their recorded performances.
