What would summer be without your favorite quintessential summer mix? Memories of warm organ riffs, funky basslines, and uplifting vocals come to mind for me. I hope that the Street LeveL mix personifies the definition of a proper summer vibe for you.

For this project, I wanted to capture warmer harmonies, melodies and beats which remind the listener of casual beach outings whether it's dancing on the sand, enjoying the beverage of their choice, or watching the sunrise and the sunset. The mix has elements of Hip Hop, Funk, Jazz, Breaks, Deep House, and Disco. 

For the intro I used a sample of a Jim Morrison (The Doors) interview which I first saw on "Electronic Awakening" (Documentary of Electronic Music) I thought he was spot on with what he said and wanted to see if I could work it into an intro...

Street LeveL (Mix)

(( Release Summer 2021)) Mezcla de musica y medicina para mi Madre 

This project honors both my mother and also madre GAIA, or pacha mama.  Organic elements of Wind, Water, Fire and of Earth are conveyed through the tactile interweaving of spoken word, whale song, and jungle sounds all of which ignite the spark of creation within this project. Flutes are abound and drums pound bridging an intimate story chapter by chapter allowing for sacred space to unfold providing the listener with a safe venue to sit back and balance their energy centers. This is a ceremonial journey, and one that I hope you enjoy. May it always be a place of refuge and retreat within your personal practice.

La Vanguardia (Mix)

(( Sexy Deep House ))

As we make the seasonal shift to Fall, the earth is on the move changing up and preparing for Winter.  With this in mind, I wanted to put a project together representative of that shift.   To me, Summer is all about the fun, while Fall is a bit more serious and introspective of what lay ahead in the future towards the end of the year.    

For this mix, I gravitated more towards 1980's synth laden styled tracks while maintaining a funky bottom end groove.  I achieved this by using some Nu Disco tracks, which I sped up, then layered both drum kicks and percussive beats to develop a deeper beefier track.  I also nabbed some modern progressive house tracks which were slowed down then EQ'd to follow the flow of the developing overall mix.  The Roland Jupiter 8 synthesizer, and other popular 80's synth ( Think Human League, Kraftwerk Visage & New Order) samples where used throughout the landscape of the mix.  I managed to also gingerly sample artists like Chaka Khan, Vanilla Ice, Marvin Gaye, and Prince for the project while melding modern day dance artists like Silver City, Jobe, Miguel Migs and Manuel Sahagun.  I think this mixture of genres and artists blended a wonderful sexy ambiance to the overall mix.  

As with my previous mix projects, I found a satisfying way to gradually build complex tension through intense editing which gave me the power to direct the musical energy and drop the funk after the said tension peaked.  I also experiment mixing into tracks using the "bottom" or the "fat" end of a song, to virtually sneak into the mix so that it would take the listener by complete surprise.  With respect to effects and my own original music, both exist within the project.  For effects, I played a lot with feedback, flange and chorus delays, then layered the "muscle" (samples/ and midi soft synth riffs) into the mix where I felt it was needed.  If you're familiar with any of the tracks, then I'm sure you'll notice the enhancements, and edits I did.

Deep & Sexy (Mix)

(( Funky Deep House ))

Funky Beat Astronaut is a funky mixture of "street" House with a hint of disco and a peppering of breaks. I toiled with remixing/editing the track arrangement for about a week before I dropped them in Ableton to mix and mash up.  If you are familiar with the tracks selected in the play-list, you'll noticed I edited them, and in some cases completely re-arrange tracks to preserve flow-energy within the set.

Concept-wise, I wanted to create a polished structured energy for this studio mix, and I think this set achieves that goal by concentrating the majority of the tunes within one theme, or key.  For a good part of the project I selected tracks in A minor and C major, but I also managed to insert tracks with signatures a few keys up and down the scale to give the set a more organic variation. Vocals are also a critical component to the mix as it adds the human element to the set, and you'll hear samples galore with heavy effects added throughout.

The mastering was achieved by using Wave's L1, PSP's Vintage Warmer and a bit of standard EQ work to give the mix space eliminating offensive frequencies thus allowing for a clean listening environment.

Something new I put together using LSDJ and my Gameboy as a slaved sound generator linked via midi through Ableton.  The bass sub and other percussive noise you hear in the track are from the Gameboy.  All the beats are original and created in Stylus RMX.  Melodies and other samples were pre-written, however I chopped them up and re-arranged them.

Element 115 - Mixchemist (Original Mix)

The Liquid Groove studio mix project allowed me to delve deeper into re-fix editing within Ableton Live. This time around, I relied heavily on edit re-arrangements which helped me re-shape the mix to give more flexibility and artistic expression creating a unique overall feel of the set.  The peaks and valleys within the mix are a byproduct of the arrangement process which was constructed to reflect a more poetic foundation inherent within my musical mind's eye thus allowing the listener a harmonic connection to the overall flow.

The track selections carry themselves into each other with each drop and break down to eventual build up. I managed to dial the BPM tempo down to a more chill groovy house vibe which allowed for more deepness to come through.  With this said, the project continues to maintain the digital jackin funk that has been prevalent in my current personal taste these days.  That is to say, the styles represented in this mix capture the essence of what I currently produce, or of what I currently perform.

Crafting this studio set took my nearly two months, and it has been a labor of love reflecting the careful attention given to each and every track selected for the listener's enjoyment. The project took nearly two months to edit, produce and arrange.  It contains tracks that I have meticulously re-fixed and re-formulated.  It is also dialed down to 127 BPM so things have time to develop within the project.  This version of the mix has several post production edits/additions and sonic enhancements plus a bonus track (Monoman - I'm Every - Sonny Fodera Remix w/a touch of Mix-Chemistry) that is not contained in the Kick down 2 Get Down version archived on Podomatic.  

Disco Deviant was a lot fun to mix and arrange... As I continue down the path of mix productions or "refixes" - I am amazed at how fluid things have become nowadays.  It used to take lots of trial and error to get things right in a mix, and lately it feels as things just come together... as they should!  Some of the mixes are accidental believe it or not! 

Special thanks go to Marc Fairfield for allowing me to debut the mix on his show.  He's getting things done in Arizona with respects to House Music and I wish him continued success!

This track is a re-edit/refix bootleg mashup of Corduroy Mavericks "Do My Thang" and Tom Shorterz "Cafe of Love" It is the opening track of my upcoming winter mix 2011/2012.

I would first like to send a big thank you to both Corduroy Mavericks &amp; Tom Shorterz for creating such intelligently funky tracks that incorporate samples of James Brown, Young MC and many others.  Check both of these artists out if you have the chance as they are both redefining House in their own unique way. 

This is the first time that I am uploading one of my re-fix/re-edit's on SoundCloud for others, so that they can get taste of what happens behind the scenes in the studio with regards to the production of my mix releases... 

As I have mentioned in the past... It takes a lot of meticulous thought and creativity to capture a certain vibe within a mix...  Especially when one is re-arranging and enhancing someone else's music... 

This is just one example of using Ableton Live and a hint of imagination to create something different, new and unique from the original pieces...  I am looking forward to releasing the upcoming winter mix... In the meantime enjoy this mashup creation while the mix is under studio production...

Originally scheduled for release in December 2011, Double Dutch is fun Journey representing the styles which presently make my booty shake on the dance floor.   I've embraced the Funky sound and will continue to explore avenues which will allow me to expand my personal interpretation of the genre further.  There are a number of artists here who are doing their thing like Sonny Fodera, Corduroy Mavericks, Manuel Sahagun, Jay West and Tovar to name a few...

For this project I wanted to re-create that vibe I captured last year w/the Funkybeat Astronaut mix.  There's a lot of Chunky Jackin House, Jazz influences, Hip Hop snippits, Funk, Soul, and Disco House running through the mix.  It was also a quite complex mix to put together.  I struggled for months to try and capture that certain vibe.  It was also a challenging mix to EQ the in the final mix down.  There were so many crazy frequencies which were canceling each other out in the layering, but in the end a nip and tuck of frequencies on my favorite VST EQ's did the trick.  I went through several renditions before finally getting the sound within the range, that in past mixes have been the core staple of my present sound and vibe.  

This is also quite a short mix... right @ 60 minutes, but w/22 tracks and individual mixes averaging around 2 minutes a piece.  Additionally, some of the tracks mashed so well together they inspired creations of stand alone tracks; the first being "Do my Thang" and "Cafe of Lost Love" which I have on my SoundCloud profile, and the 2nd track released "R2D2" and "Black Magic" (Which will be released in Late March 2012)  

These mashes proved to be worthy of additional project time thus adding to production time to the Double Dutch Project to delay the release.

Double Dutch (Mix)

(( Funky House ))

Funk Melange is a mixture of Funk, Disco, House and Breaks that gets your booty moving and shaking to the syncopation of beats and basslines from the very start of Chuck Robert's My House acappella to Nathan Stewart's Sweet Spot.  It is truly a bright and shiny Funk compilation that takes the listener deep into the mix of my personal interpretation of this warm and organic style. 
 
Within my many years of production study, I have found Ableton to be an incredible tool for creating "mix productions." I call them productions because of the total and absolute control the producer/DJ has at his fingertips allowing him to take the mix in whatever direction he feels necessary to literally control the vibe. Don't like a part of a track?  That's okay... snip snip tuck tuck, add some beats/percussion, write a synth line/bassline over it, and viola, you have a transition that gels with your next track (or a short track that is all your own.)  My experimentation doesn't end there though, with the recent addition of the Akai APC-40 midi controller to my studio, the mixes will continue to get incredibly deeper and deeper.  Soon, I will have enough in my repertoire to take this style of mixing on the road to perform "live."  I will certainly enjoy that day when it finally arrives!

Funk Melange (Mix)

I managed to procure this project by arranging within Ableton Live then by using it as the master sequencer, I dropped sample accurate cuts through my MPC 2000 XL.  Extra synth and bass richness were also injected by using my Roland 909 groove box.  This mix is a hybrid experimentation both "in" and "out of the box" and was inspired by watching my brother Stacy Osorio work the MPC in the studio when he stayed with me recently.  I have always admired his ability to produce a groove out of thin air, and I wanted to capture something similar on the fly to give the mix a certain special level of performance.  

When my brother had visited, we managed to get my studio re-connected after a long hiatus (w/a broken midi patch bay).  We replaced my old broken Midiman 8x8 with a newer model, and we got the studio to vibe like it once did in its heyday (circa late 90's early 2k's).  With this on hand, I selected cuts then chopped them up by using sample accurate lengths which were arranged in Live.  I then layered samples over the mix.  The 909 came into play with thickening of existing bass lines, and also taking riffs into a more decorative melody motion within the mix.  

The vibe is spot on with what I was trying to capture.  A Deep Funky Jacking musical adventure... yet with this said, it's also has injections of digital 80's synth pop, 70's disco and a dash of Tech House as well.  

I found new artists to promote like "The House Inspectors" "D-T3ch" "Chris Harris & Dom Martin" "Code Luke", and at the same time melded some choice tracks from my favorites like "Tovar" "B Original" "Jay West" & "Joey Youngman"   The project was an interesting twist into uncharted territory for me, and I will continue to move in this direction with my mix projects.  

30% of the mix is all original and the remaining 70% are re-edits of other Artist's tracks.  This combination has made for a well rounded mix that bangs the beats in the car as well as on the dance floor.

Reel 2 Real (Mix)

Conceived with more of a chill aspect in mind, the Yerba Buena mix project contains tracks with a bit mellower sound than what I am accustomed to mixing.  It still however maintains a signature vibe that I have managed to develop over the past year and a half whereas the premise revolves around gradual builds and drops between mixes mashed together with intelligent transitional elements giving the compilation a seamless flow from start to finish.  

This being said there are still some tracks that groove and move.  Donna Summer's "Bad Girls" comes to mind and it's placement within the mix is a tribute to her as she recently passed earlier in the summer (2012).  She was definitely a dance music icon and will remain so...  Other artists include Sonny Fodera, DJ Dan, Scott Diaz, Demarkus Lewis, Groove Federation, Inland Knights, and J Jay. 

The ratio percentage between my own original work and artist material remains close to 30/70.  I've managed to find a good balance by keeping that ratio.  The process used is the same as the "Real to Reel" mix released earlier this summer... "in and out of the box"  the box being the computer and out of the box being my Studio gear infusing samples, Synth decorations and Bass lines...

Yerba Buena (Mix)

For years now I've wanted to produce a mix that was a bit on the deeper side, yet only after recently running into an old friend and Deep House connoisseur on SoundCloud (T-Quez) was that want rekindled again.  With this in mind, I went in search of tracks and artist's that would help better capture a proper deep house vibe. 

Creating a Deep House mix isn't as easy as it sounds.  I found it challenging and discovered it is a process which requires lots of patience.  During the production however, I managed to find a good balance of vibe and music which helped paint the audio into a landscape that holds its weight.  The tempo of the mix is @ the 126 BPM, and this speed allows the mixes to develop organically to meld a cinematic tapestry for the listener. 

While researching tracks, I found some incredible artists to debut... Miguel Campbell, Prosis, Soul Minority and Ari Rhodes are just a few...  The intro for the project sets the tone of the mix.  It is an excerpt from the documentary, "How Music Works" with Howard Goodall, and I thought it was a good way to start off the project...

I was cleaning out my hard drive and found this gem in my repertoire of remixes...  This is a bootleg remix that I did of Hawke & God Within's classic 1996 track "Acid Funk" I always loved the Next School Acid Funkadelic Mix in the original EP and always wanted to do a remix of it one day. I guess now I can cross it off my bucket list.

This track was developed as a joint effort with my brother Stacy Osorio.  I was going to originally place our pseudonyms Phunkmonk and Mixchemist as the producers of the track, but thought it would be better as a stand alone track by Stacy Osorio with my remix touch instead.  

The  working draft was called "Jackin Hipster" and it was more of an offshoot for us as we delved into using 128's as per the "ill Gates" method.  I stripped the original of the drums and added a harder hitting ensemble, and then worked in filter and delays.  I added the Vocals which came from my friend Andrew Mataus on a sample swap several years ago.  I thought it would work really well with what Stacy and I had going, and I hope you agree.  I also added  samples of Afrorican's "Give it all you Got" too.  I'm debating on placing the track into the new Deep House mix I have ready to release soon "Kundalini" but still not sure if it vibes well with the other tracks I have in that mix project.  In any case, I do hope you all get a kick out of this creation...

I'm back for the second installment of "The Yoga" deep funky house series.  Kundalini actually was originally put together back in January 2013, but the final cut really wasn't finished until now.  I have to say that deep house is really tricky to mix and like Dharma Beats, it took a lot of trial and error before I got the mix sounding the way I wanted it to.  This project was still a lot of fun to arrange and produce.  I kept the tempo the same as Dharma Beats (126 BPM) and managed to get some real familiar 1980's and 1990's pop samples mixed in.   Artist in this mix range from Miguel Campbell, Sonny Fodera, James Silk, Sol Element and Art in Motion.  The intro to the set is from Afro-Rican's 80's hit "Give it all you got"
