In the wake of their widely-acclaimed album Union, JUNO-nominated duo Èbony rematerialize on the dancefloor with the otherworldly Shades of Meridian EP, projecting a waking futurist dream haunted by echoes of Detroit techno, Chicago house, South African melodies, and the rich mythology of Ancient Toronto. 

Opener “Break My Skin explores a hidden pocket of after-hours techno space-time with an ethereal vocal by James Baley, leading into the tense, disembodied jack of “Forever.” Next, “Dull Side First” rides a spectral break through a sepulchral warehouse trip, “RIFT” invokes peak-time witchcraft, and closer “My Daylight” entrances even the most self-possessed sound-and-lighting guys to spam the smoke machine until reality itself is occluded. 

And to those who say that working with JUNO-nominated artists proves that Turbo is just a cog in the CanCon cabal, we would like to familiarize you with the facts: Canadian Tire refused to carry our 2023 Bryan Adams remix LP and we have rejected five separate demos from Justin Trudeau’s tech-house alias “Arabian Nights.” It’s called integrity — try looking it up sometime.

Dull Side First

"Musique Pour Enfiler Des Perles" is the third EP by Poison Gauchiste, aka Eric Labbé, following "Musique Pour Faire Différentes Choses" and "Musique Pour Monter En Haut". It is the result of a slow maturation process, shaped by summer idleness and long winter evenings over the past two years. The EP features five compositions that, as always, blend quirky influences with distinctly personal oddities.

Caution: several of these tracks contain rhythms that might inspire dancing — though it’s unclear whether listeners will actually follow through, given the spells of languor and melancholy that occasionally drift onto the dancefloor...

Michael Mayer became obsessed with Erik Luebs, an American producer based in Osaka, after stumbling upon his independently released music on Bandcamp. Luebs’ talent for creating high-energy, minimalist acid techno with impeccable, futuristic sound design swiftly earned him a regular place in Mayer’s sets. It was only a matter of time before Luebs made his debut on Kompakt’s Speicher series with this highly versatile EP. ‘Riding the Blade’ opens the four-track EP, showcasing Luebs’ signature punchy psychedelia. ‘Scarlet Viscera’ features a sleek, minimal groove that is reminiscent of the genre’s heyday in the 2000s. ‘Transform Into Glass’ emanates blissful Detroit vibes, and the EP closes with a real bang: ‘Sucked Through Tube’ creates a frenzy on the dance floor without the need for a single kick drum. If you like your techno sexy and forward-thinking, there’s no way around the man from Osaka. Play it loud!

Valencia’s Días de Campo Records welcomes Hessa for his debut on the label -  and the result is as confident as it is contagious. The 2Vilas co-founder and mastermind behind the sought-after vinyl-only edit series Get A Life and label COSMOS opens his new four-tracker “Funky Talks” with “What’s This Shaker” - a no-nonsense, groove-heavy weapon that instantly demands attention.

From the first bar, it’s clear Hessa knows exactly how to handle tension and repetition. The bassline hits with muscular precision - round, propulsive, and full of that kinetic bounce that makes hips move before the brain catches up. Layered atop are the kind of filtered vocals only the most confident producers can pull off: the sassy, diva-esque fragments, the “in the air” whispers - all orbiting the loop like satellites, teasing familiarity without ever giving too much away.
