"It contains only music used in films from 1987-2001: Chungking Express, Lost Highway, Opera, Perfect Blue, Trainspotting, Leon: The Professional, Fallen Angels, Cruel Intentions, Hackers, Johnny Mnemonic, Cool World, Strange Days, Ghost In The Shell, and more. Perhaps there's some commonality there. I wanted to conceptualise this mix in this way as movies have really been resonating with my songwriting at the moment, and I wanted to celebrate particular films that have been extra inspirational for that process.”"

Tornado Wallace aka Lewie Day is a Berlin-based producer, DJ, and musician whose genre-spanning dance sets and studio releases are loosely defined by their generous ambience and cinematic immersiveness. Appropriately, every song here is pulled from a Letterboxd lover’s delight of international films.

You'll find your memory pleasantly jogged as these songs are given new context here. Sensual trip hop lamentations and shoegazing walls of guitar find common ground, and when’s the last time you heard Faye Wong and U2 in the same mix? These songs pull from the well of cultural nostalgia and, yet, the sum of their parts feels half a step ahead of the zeitgeist.

009: Tornado Wallace

The ups and downs of one of the world's great musical nations are marked by rapid economic expansion and unmet promises. The socioeconomic inequities revealed in daily Brazilian life ultimately sow the seeds for a highly competitive, extremely passionate, yet male-dominated EDM music industry.

 

Whilst Brazil has struggled financially to cope with its growing population demands, its rapid development has also benefitted its music scene which continues to grapple with the rhythm, syncopation and extravagant colours of a rapidly globalising continent. With the likes of Bossa Nova, Samba and choro originating in the 20th century, the nation continues to push the boundaries of the 21st century in the EDM world with a strong influence on drum and bass, house, disco and baile funk. The EDM scene has benefited massively from the contributions of numerous Brazilian artists, such as Mochakk, DJ Marky, Renato Cohen and Amanda Mussi to name a few. Brazil’s blend of latin American and Caribbean influences thanks to its geography, simultaneously interlinked into colonial culture and European motifs creates a music melting pot that drives the global EDM network. Embark on a journey in the first episode of Area 3000’s very own ‘melange’ radio show- a mixture of Brazilian genres and musicians; from neo-soul/disco to fast techno, all live mixed by @sebastian.batchelor live at Revolver lane.

 

This show is a rare and special moment to embrace, learn and listen to the colour and diversity of Brazilian artists. Music is the oxygen in daily life and many of these songs were extremely difficult to access outside of Brazil and I found myself deep down into archival territory.

Mélange presents w/ Area 3000 Radio: Clips from episode 2 of “A Brief History of Electronic Music” with @bubbastraxondarocks and @Melanger le Miel @ Revolver Lane.

This episode focuses on the sounds from the United Kingdom with odes to UKG, house, electronica, dnb and jungle to name a few. The sheer size of the UK’s EDM scene made it extremely tricky to select the smallest slice of a heavily layered cake. We found ourselves constantly debating what songs we thought truly highlighted what we wanted to showcase out of the UK - the variety, the unpredictable nature of London based vocalists all the way to boom-boom of 90s rave inspired sounds that have played a pivotal role in global music culture.

The set was a blend of vinyl/USB stuff which added to the logistics and difficulties as this was the first time these two had played together. Nonetheless their similar styles and ways of mixing combined with hundreds and hundreds of UK artists in mind fuelled a live mix and video that perfectly encapsulates the beautiful and not so beautiful of one of the world’s music treasures. As she continues to push the boundaries of EDM in the 21st century, sometimes it’s refreshing to step back and take a look at some of the songs in the UK before our time. We looked to include songs that had been released at the start of the 80s all the way to discovering songs that were released on Bandcamp yesterday.

PREMIERE: Man/ipulate - Cosmic Tea [Nuances de Nuit]

Episode 3 of Mélange presents w/ Area 3000 is all about Japan.

For this episode I’ve curated a mix of disco, breaks, and Japanese lofi motifs for one of the most musically interesting nations I’ve ever researched. The EDM scene in Japan is a rebellious and older sibling who is somewhat more established than her neighbouring counterparts of China and South Korea but also very much influenced by them.

More-so, Japan’s contribution to Jazz cannot be left out and I tried hard to incorporate elements of this as well. Much of this radio show’s aim is to challenge the way in which we find and curate what we listen to on a daily basis. Challenging ourselves to listen to different genres and cultures broadens our own understanding of music as a whole and I encourage you to do the same for a nation that you may seek connections to.

10 years of love on the dance floor!

High Hoops presents a compilation of electronic tracks from artists across the globe to celebrate 10 years of ‘love on the dance floor’ and to raise funds for three amazing charities.

Proceeds from this compilation will be shared with the LGBT Foundation, Mermaids and Meningitis now, in memory of our friends Ash, Alex T and Willow.

After the dust has settled we wanted to say how much love we have for all of you that came to our all night long at @sneakypetes ❤️‍🔥. It was genuinely filled with some of our favourite moments behind decks in our life and it was amazing to see the entire Mélange family come together ! 


We’ve uploaded the four hours onto Soundcloud as we weaved through ambient, dub, disco, UKG, speedy G, tech house and jungle. It’s safe to say whilst re listening back the first 1-2 hours we’re extremely happy with, the last hour for some reason the decks became increasingly blurry- Gabriel and I forgot how to mix altogether whoops.
