Very excited to debut a new project by local radio host, event curator, DJ and all round beautiful person Claire Dickson. You may know Claire from her work with PBS, where she has presented a wide range quality music on her former show Circling the Sun and as an on again off again co-host of The Breakfast Spread with our friend Milo. She also runs the excellent Listen Here online radio station and is one of the minds behind local dance music event/mix series @luna_blessings with @djluvyou. What a resume! Daphne is Claire's DJ alias for exploring the darker/clubbier sides of electronic music. Keep an eye/ear out for Daphne in a club near you soon :)

An exceptional club mix from Brooklyn based Lychee.

I first discovered Lychee a while ago via their mixes on two of my favourite series: @sure_thing and @daisychain_podcast. I am always inspired by their ability to put together a stunning set with breadth and depth, always leaving me eager to dig in a new direction. 

Alongside curating the mix and interview series @spontaneousaffinity Lychee has been busy playing a steady schedule of gigs, and their Maybe mix is a wonderful encapsulation of hard and fast dance floor energy ranging from moody broken techno to euphoric drum and bass. Thank you so much for contributing Alyce, absolute fire as always.

FUERZA BRUTA (original mix)

Just a few years ago, Daniel Avery emerged from a famous Scrutton Street studio where the likes of Andrew Weatherall and Timothy J FairPlay were regulars. Since then, he has gone his own way, releasing a machine made, proudly analogue brand of indie-electro-techno-dance music that has come mostly on Errol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound label. Mixing dark beats with dense and smoky synth atmospheres as both a DJ and producer, he knows how to cook up a metallic and menacing groove with aplomb. After impressing with his debut album, Drone Logic, in 2013, we're proud to invite him to this year's Lente Kabinet, Dekmantel Festival (together with Roman Flügel), and our mix series. 

The fabric resident kicks off his mix with some heady drones and deep, spacious grooves that are eerie and unsettling. The next 90 odd minutes sees him blend sublime acid, slithering synths and increasingly minimal techno into a seductive set that is expertly paced and seamlessly mixed. Perfect for the dead of night in some intimate back room, it shows a heady and atmospheric side to Avery that is truly compelling.

San Francisco still breeds talent, the kind that not only pushes its rich history of cutting edge dance sounds forward, but the kind that are willing to pay their respects to those that came before. Mozhgan has been doing just that. With her stylized approach to dark discotheque-ing, this San Francisco based artist has quickly stormed our favorite dancefloors across the city with her mystical synthesizer heavy sounds and resiliently optimistic black-heart. Her previous effort for the Honey Potcast spread like fire and became one of the most listened to mixes we have had the pleasure to release. For her sophomore effort, Moz pulls out her ceremonial techno knife and impales listeners with 50 minutes of intensity. Don't worry, there is a nice reward at the end for those brave enough - buckle up.

HNYPOT: 210 Mozhgan's Venom Mix

From cult local beginnings on the Berlin circuit, Rødhåd is now very much part of the global DJ highway. What initially turned heads was his ability to hold down long and hypnotic sets of loopy, moody house and techno all masterfully mixed in immersive ways. His productions, too, mixed sparse ambient designs with rolling techno grooves on labels like Dystopian and Token, and just this month he put out his debut album, Anxious. It’s a filmic meditation on beautifully bleak and eerie sounds and is another reason we love the man after he turned in a memorable closing set on our UFO stage at this year’s Dekmantel Festival. 

Over a ninety minute live mix recorded recently, he gets more energised with plenty of hurried techno and urgent synth lines all tightly weaving round each other. It’s a high pressure and enchantingly linear set that touches on Millsian space vibes, industrialism and unhinged apocalypse music in one smoothly mixed and sequenced session that will leave you out of breath.

With a meticulous methodology for seeking out and organizing tracks, this Durham, North Carolina-based DJ and bioengineer brings a taste for the sweaty and psychedelic to the decks. His mix for Spontaneous Affinity is an emotive listen, traversing everything from the euphoric to the pensive.

"Given that we’re entering month 9 of the Covid19 pandemic in the US, I wanted to snapshot how it feels for me to be playing/experiencing music at this moment. The goal here was to make a deliberately eclectic mix representative of my moods lately: hopeful, unsettled, wistful, a bit dark, dreaming, playful, melancholic, erratic, with some fleeting moments of tenderness and euphoria.

I went through several folders of stuff I’ve been itching to play, including some recent acquisitions, and landed on the Glacci, the Barker, and the Dadub/Retina.it tracks as the primary ones that would guidepost the flow of the mix. I knew I wanted to have the Barker track near the end, because it's got this sweetness yet it's still kind of thoughtful and longing–a nice, complex mood to leave a listener with during a lockdown.

From there I started seeding a playlist and loosely sorting by 'energy' to connect the feel of the three tracks in a form that I hope is interesting for y'all. I recorded the mix live into Logic via a Xone:96 using 3 XDJ-1000Mk2's and an Eventide H9 (this time just for a little reverb)."

Michael Upson presents Queer Ears with Carlos Souffront - 21 January 2021

We still vividly remember the phenomenal Boiler Room set that @jasminhoek played in our club two years ago. For the first WAS. podcast of 2021 she laid down an outstanding mix with banging beats and raw energy that takes us right back to the place that we're all missing so dearly right now: the dark and smokey dance floor. 

Her contribution to our series is a solid reminder to keep the hope for better times alive because we will dance together again!
