BBC Radio 1 – Essential Mix – 2021

VIVa Music's Detlef is on the first show in 2014. He talks with Dan about his start in electronic music 20 years ago and of course his fairly odd choice of a stage name. Detlef's mix is dense and funk-driven and shows a high amount of skill level.

The first hour of the show is mixed by Moon Harbour Radio host Dan Drastic an features tracks of the Barricades EP from Sable Sheep, which just was released digitally and on vinyl. Dan also plays new tracks by Smalltown Collective, Italoboyz, Chocky or Dario D'attis amongst others.

With residencies in New York, Los Angeles, London and Berlin, they are among the most successful DJ duos in the scene. Over the last decade, andhim have manifested their signature sound without any boundaries in expressing themselves on a creative level. They have cultivated an exceptionally loyal fan base of musical lovers all over the world.

Playing on the Robot Heart bus at Burning Man is a dream I’ll never get tired of living. Robot Heart is a constant source of inspiration to me and so many others! Grateful for the opportunity to play on the bus again. 

This year (2024), my set time was Monday Morning at 7:00 am so I wanted to prepare something special for the beginning of an unforgettable week. 

I decided to play a live set filled with most of the Edits/Remixes I’ve made along the years (for example: Edits/Remixes I’ve made of Alice Coltrane, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Michelle Gurevich, Acid Pauli, Nicolas Jaar, Fred Again, etc…). 

I honestly couldn’t be happier with the result of this experiment! 

Massive thanks to the Robot Heart fam and everyone who was there!

A Night of Sand and Sound – Burning Man 2024

Burning Man is never about predictability—it’s about embracing the chaos and letting the dust write its own story.

Arodes and I were set to play a special back-to-back DJ set high above Black Rock City, floating in a hot air balloon, watching the neon veins of the desert pulse beneath us. But the desert had other plans. The wind howled, the storm rolled in, and our aerial stage became impossible.

On the campground, just in front of The Man, a different kind of stage awaited. Vintage Culture had already successfully gathered a nice crowd, a resilient tribe of dust-covered dancers who refused to let the storm dampen their spirits. Arodes and I eventually stepped up, feeding off their energy, turning uncertainty into rhythm, and letting the music cut through the swirling sand.

It was one of those nights where the connection felt deeper, where the music wasn’t just heard—it was felt. A true Burning Man moment.

This mixtape captures the energy of that night—the spontaneity, the rawness, the beauty of letting go and letting the music lead the way.

The conceptual experience from Damian Lazarus and his team of dedicated and visionary musicians and artists lies just three short days away. In speaking to Defected recently about what fans can expect, Damian says: “Partying has actually become quite safe; you buy your ticket to an event and can pretty much imagine exactly how it will pan out before you walk through the door. I love the idea of creating something where there is an uncertainty; where there is room for the element of surprise... some kind of danger and mystery. I think Day Zero offers these exciting qualities.” The genesis of this was a spiritual experience that followed a conversation with a Shaman on the beach in Tulum where Lazarus raised his hands to the moon and felt the presence of an “electric force field.”

Considering this, it’s hard not to feel the hairs on the back of your neck start to tingle as you imagine what is to come. The feeling that accompanies dancing with your favorite friends and strangers to the underground’s best artists amongst ancient pyramids constructed by a race of people who felt their calendar didn’t need the ability to forecast past the day in which the event will take place surely won’t be something we’ll ever forget.
