It’s nearly Christmas and that can only mean one thing. Gifts. So in the nature of the festive season may we present to you this exclusive mix from are Canadian duo Deadly Vanity. Consisting of Joel waznicky James MacGregor, together, they make ethereal, esoteric house music, the type of which is just as suited to the club as it is the home. Indeed, theirs is an eclectic sound palette, so much so that they actually started off making music in a rock band before making the somewhat unusual progression towards 4/4 strands. That said, it's a decision that's paid dividends thus far, especially where their debut EP on Bohemian Yacht Club, 'World Stop Turning' is concerned.

With all this in mind, we called on them for a mix, and what they turn in is a splendorous listen that calls on classic and contemporary house music alike. Sit back, relax and enjoy our mix of the day. One thing is for sure – you'll be hearing plenty more from these boys in 2014.

Continuing the trajectory set by last year’s EPs and experimental long-player, Reeko returns to Samurai Music to deliver an expansive album that goes further into his experimental practice at the intersection of deep techno, drum & bass and electronica.

On Cryptophony, Rico continues this thread of exploration and uses the concept of inaudible or encrypted sounds as an inspirational jump-oﬀ point for an incredibly detailed, nuanced body of work. When meditative minimalism and insistent repetition are key compositional tools, the sound ﬁeld is opened up for subtlety in the spaces between notes, and that’s precisely the experience Rico has crafted across seven extended pieces.

“Crytophony explores how sound can conceal, suggest or reveal information in a symbolic, sensory or ritualistic way,” Rico explains. “I found it interesting as a first step to investigate further. There are no hidden messages in the music, but there are strange voices that, after the final process, sound transformed.”

Local friends turn international collaborators on 'Sleep Pressure', as Iti and Axon Growth Factor, now split between London and Naarm/Melbourne, close their widened gap with a warm and sanguine shared release. The EP, released via Iti's imprint Pocketmoth, sees the duo tracing their roots back to the hazy inner-city suburbs of Meanjin/Brisbane, where a shared love of hardware led to evening jams after work.

'Sleep Pressure', the release's title track, is one of the products of those very late-night sessions. A remarkably restrained brand of electro, the opener is a soft, gentle, and still notably 'tight' piece of work, featuring layered analogue tones and deep IDM-leaning percussion.

'Sleep Pressure' releases in full on Friday, November 28.

There is a new artist from Japan followed by the name Kakeru who is giving his Shaw Cuts debut with „Raw Courage“, telling the story of an emperor besieged by an army who then entrusts his child to the Black Dragon Clan heading off to a dangerous journey.
An attempt to usurp the Ming Emperor's throne by the sinister martial artist simply known as „old monster" and his armies results in most of the palace being massacred. „Quagmire“ and its vibrant percussive pattern carried by a heavy broken kick and a driving bassline help the emperor’s infant son to escape and put in care of the Black Dragon Clan.
En route they are attacked by government forces but rescued by two knights. They prove to be a valuable addition to the party in subsequent encounters with their pursuers. „Mirror Forest“ and its laid-back atmosphere, mysterious vocal snatches and shining pads carried by an expressive drum pattern help the travellers parrying every sneaky attack on their journey.
Trying to head to the White Dragon Clan in order to seek for help, the squad has to masquerade and take several battles, always protecting the baby in tow. The razor-sharp percussions, corrosive bass and thrashing kick of „Swaying“ tremendously supports the warriors in each fight.
Finally they make it to the temple of the White Dragons where they show their Black Dragon seal as a sign of solidarity. But all of a sudden the mood changes. „Broken Bubbles“ and its menacing atmosphere built up by a monstrous sub bass, reduced but impactful drums and subtle synth elements underline the potential threat. Did they walk into a trap? Is there enough energy left for one big fight? Raw courage is vital now.

[SC022] A2: KAKERU - MIRROR FOREST

French producer @marino2dj lands on @useless-seconds with 'AS_FWD', bringing big soundsystem material with the weighty sound palettes of dubstep and dub steppers.

The massive low-end power of ‘homie’ carries suspenseful synths, sharp drums, and a classic but tasteful vocal - all topped off with gunshot samples.

Sometime earlier this year, mysterious stickers started popping up - my face Photoshopped onto a Pokémon. After a few reposts, I learned the Pokémon in question was Mewtwo, which apparently makes me… Rhywtwo (It rhymes!...).

Since then, people have been spotting these stickers in Amsterdam, Paris, New York, Stockholm, Berlin and London so far.

I still have no clue who’s behind this or *why*(!?). But since it doesn’t seem to be an insult or promoting anything, I decided to see it as some kind of game. So, in the spirit of embracing chaos - when life gives you a sticker with your face on it, you make.. a track.
