Celebrated DJs @jon_k_mcr and Elle Andrews (@souveniruk) mint their hugely promising new label, @mal-recordings with proper dancefloor screwballs by @ausschuss; decimating UKG, dembow and industrial dancehall styles in a playfully mutable volley of devilish club ballistics.

Launching MAL as a reaction to the sorry state of global affairs, the ‘Cruise’ EP epitomises the maddening flux of the matter with a strong reminder to dance in the face of it all. In fractal not fractional moves, Berlin-based sound designer Linus Nicholson aka Ausschuss outlines the label’s divergent co-ordinates with seven tracks that bend sound designer tekkers to structures that step in the cracks between styles, zig-zagging between crafty permutations of classic and up-to-the moment UK club music, and a world of influence from Angolan Kuduro to Latin dembow and Afro-Caribbean dub, or what is commonly known as hard drum.

No mistake, this is rudely countercultural business, colouring outside the lines of convention in a way that defies categorisation, but will be recognised by dedicated DJs and dancers.

A thick fog hung low over the city; barely a sliver of light could pierce through its murky haze. It instilled a sense of impending doom amongst the inhabitants. There was a certain amount of superstition that had already wormed its way into people's every day lives here. Tales had been passed down through generations about the strange occurences and unexplained attacks that had taken place; some dismissed it as hearsay while others took it as gospel. For them, even the slightest change in the energy or weather and the speculation would soon begin.

The coming together of Good Morning Tapes' Angel Hunt and BEAM's Peter Rocket, under the name Angel Rocket the London-based duo explore their shared love of divergent strains of dancehall, techno and breaks. The first vinyl release on Brighton's Accidental Meetings, following a string of tape releases and compilations, the four-tracker also marks Angel Rocket's debut release and morphs from one form to another, taking in dembow rhythms, industrial dancehall variations, gentle polyrhythms and 4x4 techno.

After the widely acclaimed "Rituals" album released in April 2020, Flore is now back to the cherished area of banger engineering with a four packer of original compositions to be unleashed this spring 2022 on her own POLAAR imprint.
The project’s title itself shows clearly what her program is all about : "Legacy & Broken Pieces" has to be seen as a cruise into the anterior future rather than a trip down memory lane. Following this mantra, it’s more than clear that her music does not constitute a tribute to any previous club music history, but has to be seen as a true proposition of sonic innovation and moving paradigms.

"I'm tired of the nostalgia that can be found in electronic music nowadays. After two years of global pandemic struggle and sanitary crisis and now a war happening in Europe, the world will never be the same. Then why should music has to be so ?" says Flore.

Thus, she offers to rework this legacy with her very own vision of sound wizardry, providing a wide range of sonic textures to fulfill this forward goal of breaking patterns within the electronic continuum. Yet another proof of Flore’s skills for always trying to innovate and never repeat herself.

“Disruption” echoes an aerial jungle of the former century while “Fiery Principle” rides Jamaican waves of bass soon dynamited by minced voice samples evoking a soul goddess from the 90’s. The upbeat intro of “The Switcher” leads us towards a choir of drums navigating various black rooted rhythm traditions, but tripping into a very refined and spatial production effort. The records ends with “Primary Mineral”. Its rough and matte sound seems to drill into a wall of fragmented beats racing towards an elusive end, suggesting another musical adventures to be revisited soon…

I met Dan at Sustain-Release in 2018 and have been nipping at his heels ever since. His work with Brooklyn-based rave outfit Sweat Equity provided a blueprint for us early on and he was one of the first remixes we commissioned for Sorry Records. His music has moved us throughout the years too from countless solo releases to his work alongside Austin Peru of Vision Fortune on their collaborative experimental ambient leaning project Dekalb Works. Dan's a constant joy and thankfully consistent presence in both our lives and on the NYC dancefloor. He's also dirty at bowling.

An early version of For Your Consideration, originally built in 2018 before the versions that made it to Not Like That, Not Like You.

The track takes huge inspiration from Mosca's "White Mice" & Levon Vincent's "Man Or Mistress", rolling for 7 minutes with sirens ringing throughout.

Pairs well with white linen trousers and cheap sangria, best enjoyed at the afters.
