Malcolm Mitchell’s Global Warming Records is a self-proclaimed outlet for “discoholics” and multi-cultural geeks. The three projects they’ve released are a collection of songs emanating a cosmic, often tribal, synth heavy analog disco sound. The latest release from Marseille based producer Fred Berthet (aka. DJ STEEF), an old time friend of the label and major artist of the downtempo scene in the South of France, fits a similar mold. The EP, similar to its artwork, is filled with a slow, sexual tension heightened by slow, driving rhythms and hypnotic acid bass lines.

Included in the EP is a remix from Italian balearic duo, Mushrooms Project (Giorgio Giri and Marco Lentano), who have crafted a superbly organic and deeply drugged out mid tempo burner that seems to call on numerous Ibiza sunrises for inspiration. Freaky, mesmerizing synth work take the listener on a trip to acid islands where steady bass permeates through thick fog over glistening percussive sequences. Its driving rhythms make the track feel faster than it is. This is a much appreciated form of trickery in down-tempo productions. Slow burners that make you dance hard are not easy to make.

The EP, and 100 limited edition copies of the naughty cover art illustrated by Ben Hubbard and printed on 420 x 594 mm poster, 250g heavy matte paper is available to purchase via GWR’s Bandcamp page. Having established a handful of renowned imprints such as Rekids, Pyramids Of Mars, Cabin Fever and The Double R, Matt Edwards’ new venture aims to shine a light on classic tracks that didn’t always get the recognition they deserve.

“Amoon [Sir Lord Comixx] and I go back a long way and we met through our friend Justin [Isonoe] in the early 90s,” says Matt Edwards. “I was still living in Catford and would regularly drive over to Justin’s studio where he'd play me all this crazy, otherworldly music from Amoon and it blew my mind - I was completely captivated by his unique take on techno.”

“At the time I had no idea that we grew up in the same neighbourhood and Amoon was living just around the corner so, of course, we hooked up and in 1996 I released an EP from him including one of his classics ‘UR My Omen’ on my Hard Up label.”

Composed of four tracks from separate releases, ‘Retroactive (Part One)’ inaugurates with ‘1 4 The Groove’ from Sir Lord Comixx’s ‘Danceteria EP’ on Ugly Music. Produced in ’96, the track’s raw aesthetic features sharp percussion, heady melodies and a compelling groove. Meanwhile, ‘Enemax’ – which appeared on 1A Records - demonstrates throbbing synths and shuffling drums.

Originally produced under his a.Moon moniker in ‘98, ‘Funk Box’ is the most robust track on the package with its thudding kicks and assortment of meandering sounds, before the ‘Azid Jazz’ provides a deep and funky finale.

@storyaboutyou2017 is a new label based in Bielefeld, a north-western German city infamous for being a myth constructed and kept alive by the Illuminati. Or so some jokers/conspiracy theorists would have you believe. Of course the city is very real, as is the label, who are too real to play the PR game for now. Out next month, their third release features a variety of artists, separated by geography but united under the banner of deep house.

Our pick is a track by young producer and label co-founder @interstate98, who's previously released on the Danish imprint Waxtefacts. Built around a backdrop of syrupy synths, 'Sweetest Pain' is a soulful, old-skool stomper featuring the dreamy vocals of Australian singer Quails.

Legendary Manchester based Paper Recordings’ celebrates its 25th birthday in 2019 and a relationship with Norway that stretches back almost as far.

In 1997 Those Norwegians’ Kilpisjärvi EP (Rune Lindbaek, Torbjørn Brundtland of Röyksopp & Ole Mjøs) was released and helped blueprint the Nordic cosmic, left-field take on house, disco and Balearic that has gone on to conquer the world. Hell, they even made an award winning documentary about it ‘Northern Disco Lights’.

The label has helped break generations of Norwegian producers including Proviant Audio (who went Top 40), De Fantastiske To, Diskobeistet, Vinny Villbass, Rave-enka and Bøka / Lakehouse as well as release music by legends like Ralph Myerz, Lindstrøm, Mental Overdrive and Erot

Now things have come full circle as Paper go back to Tromsø where everything and nothing has changed. It is still a town inside the arctic circle a long way from anywhere that allows its creativity to develop away from the media spotlight. It is also still turning out amazing producers who have the potential to flip the game once again and go on to be the next Todd Terje or Lindstrøm.

Third Attempt and Runther are part of the new generation and bring a uniquely original Norwegian sound to take things forward. Runther delivers his big room deep beats with subs, squelches, breaks and ambience. Third Attempt rewrites the nu-disco rule book with funk, soul and a nod to the likes of Metro Area, Daniel Wang and 90s Paper.

They are part of “The Tromsø Collective” and Volume 1 is the first EP in an on-going series celebrating the city’s creative talents with its designers, artists, film-makers, DJs and producers. It is a co-release with one of the cornerstones of Norwegian dance music, longstanding Tromsø label Beatservice plus Runther’s fledgling imprint, Run The Rave.

The Austrian electronic music label fortunea records is back with a new 12“. Viennese label-member "Peletronic" is the key figure on this record.
His intention was to limit himself in the use of external samples, without loosing on his own signature style. He tried to achieve this by recording all essential parts by himself and by flipping those snippets later on in a sample-jam manner.

The opening track "Blyss" is an infectious deep house groover.
Shredded filtered vocals, a bouncing bassline and a sun rising pad are the main characters of this piece.

Salzburg’s globetrotter Demuja is also present on this release by contributing a remix. He did a classic NY style house music treatment of the title track. It peaks with stunning strings and stabs and has a lot of potential for being heard during this years open air season.
The B-side of Peletronic's EP also features the original track "Wrapped In Silk". A gently calm down tune for afterhours. The slow tempo supports the vibe of silky pads and dreamy vocals.

And to wrap it all up, this track has been remixed by a second well-known Austrian artist. LeSale brings the mood of the original perfectly over to the dancefloor and adds some acid flavor to it.

Overall a great selection of music for this summer, made up by all Austrian artists. Check it out!

Parisian label De La Groove @delagr00ve returns with "Nebula", its 5th vinyl compilation, gathering all its resident artists. The producers are going through the entire House music spectrum with this series of compilations, and after the recent "Late Psalms" and "In Motion" volumes, they deliver organic grooves, deep vibes and warm relaxing songs.

"Nebula" features works from the label's regular producers Knuckle G, Le Hutin, Chinau, B.K Milk and Thirsty Guys. Our own favorite is "Ca Pointe", on the flipside, produced by Vanderkraft @adrien-penhouet. The French producer here embraces a vocal and math-rock approach of House, developping throughout the track until an epic finish.
