Te Puke Thunder is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most sought after cannabis strains. 

Hailing from the volcanic regions of New Zealand, Te Puke Thunder is prized for its larger buds and higher potency. Gaining popularity in the 70s, the polyploid plant succeeded in becoming a well renowned strain and was notably displayed in a number of Amsterdam coffee shops.

New Zealand authorities believe they have successfully wiped out the majority, if not all, possible trails for the whereabouts of the venerable strain. Some believe there may not be a single seed left with the unmatched genetics of the original Te Puke Thunder strain.

The Motherland EP sees Krewcial and his collaborators explore different variations of African funk with an electronic edge. The moody and contemplative vocals on “Owo” discuss the meaning of true wealth, accompanied by an afrobeat groove so funky that Fela himself would very likely not have been able to sit still on. 

“Wahala Dey” sees all kinds of West African influences come together for a loose-limbed groove with a bassline that’s funky as can be. “Kitoko” and “Ghana groove” are equally inspiring, full of rich percussive improvisation, funk-laden guitar licks and dusty horns, showcasing not just the songwriting talent of Krewcial, but also his talent to bring the right people together and simply have a great time recording music from the soul.

It's been seven years since Smallpeople's debut album, 'Salty Days'. In the time since, much has changed in our world of dance music, and, so we hear, even beyond. Yet our men in Hamburg have remained dedicated to their unapologetically reassuring vision of house music as-a-whole. As well as expanding their Smallville Records shop in Hamburg's St. Pauli, they've continued to act on their direct-line to the beating heart of house music at some of the world's finest clubs, including their monthly residency at Hamburg's legendary Golden Pudel, inviting guests such as Lakuti, Session Victim and Pantha Du Prince into the warmest dance in the grimiest club. Of course, all these manoeuvres sit alongside their work running Smallville Records, home to the likes of Moomin, STL and Christopher Rau, and it's sub-label, Fuck Reality.

Given Julius Steinhoff and Dionne's stewardship in filtering the creme-de-la-creme of house music from the underground and into clubs across Europe and further afield, it would be particularly cliched on this occasion to stress that their second record is 'eagerly awaited.' In their own way, they have already given us enough great records. But with 'Afterglow', we get another, and more importantly, one carved directly from the hearts and record collections of two individuals whose understanding of dance music appears to be some sort of blissful second-nature.

This sort of earned assuredness is immediately established on opening track 'Magic Interference', a rolling, deep and somewhat jazzy house number with tumbling keys and sky-walkin' chords. This steady, blissful vibe sets the tone for the first half of the record, as the pair patiently unfold their touchstones; equal parts Chicago ('Hearts at Whole'), Detroit ('All States of Dawn') and Hamburg, famed for it's transatlantic routes via groundbreaking clubs such as Front, it's a crystalline distillation of a sound that's earnest, but never nostalgic.

Intuitive selectors as they are, Smallpeople pick the ideal moment to up the pace for the home-run, defined here by the spiky, disco bassline of 'Beyond', an unexpected ingredient that Steinhoff and Dionne nevertheless manage to diffuse into spacedust. It's a brilliant wrong footing before the wide-eyed, warm-hearted anthem-in-waiting, 'Sonic Winds', a wonderfully cheeky glimpse of Smallpeople as peak time heroes, before the acid-flecked shuffle of Benevolent Reciever reveals their spiritual soundboy side.

In conclusion, title track 'Afterglow' surmises the generous spirit at the heart of Smallpeople's operation; a sensitive and irresistible ode to record stores, parties, community and discovery. So, worth that seven year wait' Who cares about time, when your music's this timeless'

The third release from FLMB sees two artists given space for their refined and updated tech house outings. Umberto (aka one half of Bologna duo Nudge and owner of 320 kb music) brings the deep bassline and skip of his 90s Italian house heroes to proceedings on 'Restoration', while the bumping low end and syncopated chords of 'Kidz' nod back over the Atlantic to the dusty garage house sounds of New York. On B side, Seafoam Delivers 2 Unrelesed Guidance style cuts from early 2000  Sophisticated Deep.

The Answer

Origins" is a collection of 6 pillars in exploratory electronic music from 6 different uprising producers and sound artists. A varied, yet cohesive collection of bright, meditative, and pulsating atmospheres.

The opening track, "Hornet", from Florida's Alien House uncovers otherworldly landscapes as they traverse through a haze of deep-space electro. Fluttering synths fill barren craters where shadow figures lurk in and out of light. Rising and rising with a strange, euphoric tension.

The elusive Joe Gigs follows suit with "Time Slip", a slow-rolling house arrangement that stutters underneath a chord phrase built for an endless sunrise. Faint vocals echo out as an introspective flute pattern comes into view. Finally met with a warm, slinky bass-line that tingles the spine.

Continuing on with the house grooves, Portland's Well Being gives us "Soft Mood", which is just that. Shiny, crisp percussive elements ride a groove that peaks and valleys in all the right ways. Gentle acid bass echoes out in radar ping patterns while swells of smooth synth and indistinct vocal chops fill the room.

Starting on the flipside we have a choice cut from Austin, TX stalwart, Corduroi. Deep, lush synths become the lifeblood of "Planet Cool" while a break-ish rhythm catapults us into orbit. Acid bass sequences drip like honey as the synths gain energy and form. Suddenly we find ourselves four on the floor as every element seamlessly lives as one.

Nestled in the middle of side B features "Cloud Mirror" from Akasha System. Hushed out toms and broken snares meet breathy, misty synths before the sub bass guides us into the next realm. Suddenly a hazy bell phrase comes into view followed by mysterious clicks and clacks. And of course, what A.S. song would be complete without a dreamy mallet section?

Couldn't think of a better finale than this epic journey of a track from LA's Pkacarl. "Holding Together" starts us off with an end-of-the-world piano scenario before being joined by what can only be described as an electric guitar oozing through the portals of an entire galaxy of synths and pedals. What really makes this song is the mind-crushing bass-line with an invincible spirit that may keep you dancing infinitely.
