Zimbabwe-born Londoner Kundai lives and creates art in the key of exuberance. From her fashion design to her unabashed exploration of self via club-adjacent outsider pop, Kundai’s celebratory approach to life––inclusive of vulnerability and uncertainty––takes shape on Glisten.

Vibrant forms emerge in murky territory and Kundai has a way of bringing them to light. Eccentricities and imperfections are welcomed in her production aesthetic, brimming with spontaneity. Robust rhythm sections offset delicate falsetto musings and playful mallets, while distorted hand drums careen over chopped and screwed chants and MC-style talk-singing. All of these seem to be familiar elements in isolation but strike a wild combination in synergy––a theme that might tap into the nature of the artist herself. The sum of varied life experiences and self-questioning that come for all human beings, but queer immigrants in particular, you can hear Kundai’s music practice polishing the kernel of who she is and who she is constantly becoming.

Two years since his Going For It EP, Livity Sound is pleased to welcome back Sydney’s DJ Plead for a second round of versatile, psychedelic club variations. Since debuting around 2018 Plead has forged a distinctive sound which focuses on inventive use of percussion and elegant melodic hooks that draw lines between global dance music cultures without adhering to any fixed formula. 

From the carnival futurism of lead track ‘Come Quick’ to the infectious reggaeton lilt and understated trance synths of ‘El Es’, Plead presents a sound as playful as it is serious, predominantly exploring the 100 bpm tempo range. Shaped out by acutely angled rhythms, shifting time signatures and bold licks, Quick EP further establishes him as a vital, individual talent with the kind of flexible club tracks that bend between scenes and inject vibrant energy into the dance.

Premiere: Kundai 'Fake'

A shrill repetitive noise roused them in the early hours of the morning - like an air raid siren it cut through everything. Where it came from they didn't know, as far as they were aware there was nobody around for miles and miles - this was the middle of nowhere. Sleep was impossible now, though tiredness gripped every inch of them, they couldn't drift off for fear of the unknown. By the window they sat, squinting in the darkness, listening out for something moving in the bushes, but nothing appeared before day broke - had they dreamed it all?

As one half of the brains behind Scuffed Recordings and the curator of Definite Party Material, Ian DPM knows a thing or two about what constitutes a banging tune. Making his first forays into production himself a few years back with his Visions EP on Scuffed, he's since released a bunch of other EPs that teeter on the fringes of club music, fusing the likes of UKG, breakbeat, dancehall and techno. His next release comes via London-based music platform turned label Mantissa and is charged up with all the sonics you'd expect from him; weighty basslines, frenetic rhythms and crisp breakbeats.
