Patrick Tipler, known as Delay Grounds is a Bristol-based experimental sound artist, producer and composer. His music incorporates elements of abstract, sample-based percussion, experimental synthesis and techno.

Having played in various musical outfits over the last 10 years, Patrick decided to go solo in 2017 to nurture his individual relationship with sound, while developing a fresh abstract perspective on electronic & techno music.

Delay Grounds explains “Dance music has become a focal point for me creatively over the last few years and has pretty much taken over my life. A dance floor can serve as a temporary alternative version of reality, one where people are given the opportunity to let go. I want this to be reflected in the sound materials I used to produce my EP -a platform for expression with a purity of purpose that is open for interpretation and is being refreshingly reinvented constantly.”

While adding, “I am compelled to work with abstraction, focusing my creative energy toward the production of sounds that simultaneously respect the form and purity of dance music, while attempting to develop a fresh perspective.”

‘Upcycling’ is the embodiment of this philosophy. A 5 track EP, in which Delay Grounds collaborates with the artist, Liz Naden, to create electronic music, intertwined with the sounds of Naden’s unique sculptures.

The tracks and sculptures alike are made from rubbish found in skips, yet manipulated into eye-catching sculptures and organic sounds. The project embodies abstract hyper-realism within the material of the works to encourage a forward-thinking attitude, Upcycling the traditional artistic mediums into a means of communication.

Delay Grounds reveals, “Working with Liz on Upcycling has helped to develop my understanding of what a collaboration can be and how a collaboration can work, each piece had to be conceptually and aesthetically congruent.”

Subb-an continues to develop his One Records platform, adapting and moulding alongside stylistic shifts in modern minimal whilst also maintaining a high degree of quality control.   Central to this successful adaptation has been the carefully selected roster of artists he works with; some old friends, some new-but always artists whose work reflect the contents of his own record bag: neatly reduced tunes aimed squarely at the dance floor.

As it trundled into town the crowd began to get excited, they cheered and chanted in celebration at the arrival of the wonderful old machine. They'd been here before, not that they might ever remember it. Each fad and phase had come and gone with more desperate hype and overly zealous excitement than the last only to be washed up and replaced by something else the next week. This was the tale of the bandwagon, a never ending story for posers and eccentrics who pretended that they were something more, something first, something original. They were not. 

art-aud is a record label on which we keep a close eye, the Italian imprint has released a fine catalogue of material over the years and has featured the likes of Loraine James, The Horn, Mark Archer, Wedding Acid Group and more. 

The next release comes from Dj Archaea, an emerging producer from Tampa. The record is rounded off by two remixes, one of which is by Facta who delivers a dubbed our rework of 'Bandwagon Esq'.

Nikki Nair is fast becoming one of the most diverse and forward-thinking artists in electronic music, flying the flag for increasingly hybridized methods and doing it your own way. His sound is inimitable and cannot be defined; readily bottling a multitude of emotions in a relatively short space of time. 

Nikki’s meteoric rise has come in the form of eclectic releases like his ‘More is Different’ EP on Dirtybird to the downright filthy and party-starting ‘Trying To’ on Bristol’s Scuffed Recordings - Influenced by anything from Detroit techno, to lush ambient soundscapes and Florida breaks. The Knoxville born, Atlanta based producer continues his journey through shape shifting universes on his debut for Lobster Theremin, with five different but equally impressive tracks. 

‘Shufflin’ kick starts the EP in Nikki’s signature, unpredictable style; as squelchy bass-lines growl at heavily swung drums and low pitched vocal loops, before ‘WWC’ -  an off-kilter minimal stepper, walks the tight-rope between entropy and synchronized dance.

‘I Can’t Stop’ meanders from kinky bass & breaks, to deconstructed dubstep and trap; causing more facial expressions in six minutes than ever thought possible. Nair’s hybridized methods continue to shine through in ‘Yoland And His Tortoise’ - a trippy and colourful dream told through nuance in sound. The EP then closes off with the laid-back grooves of ‘Urquoise’ - a hypnotising ritual best practiced in nature.

The room was deafly silent; so quiet she could hear her heart pulsing and the blood coursing through her veins. Hours had passed since she first arrived, there had been no sonic or visual stimuli to keep her mind busy; she'd taken to fixing her gaze on a spot on the wall in the hope that it might force something indescribable to happen. The wait felt endless, like an infinite stretch of time with no end in sight, how long could this torture go on for?

Manchester's Left, Right & Centre return for their first release of 2022 and the third artist-led release on the label. At the helm this time it's Bristol-based producer and Rinse France resident Pluralist who has previously put out rhythmic outings for Panel Audio, Manuka Records and Control Freak Recordings. For this three track excursion, titled B Squared, Pluralist treats us to another batch of syncopated drum patterns, rumbling subs and pacy techno mutations that are ready to heat up any dance floor.

@pluralist guides us on a journey through the countless mutations of techno in this EP, which marks the third artist-led release from Manchester’s pioneering club night and record label @leftrightandcentreuk. Rolling through three tracks with the clever use of percussive atmospherics and syncopated beats, ‘B Squared’ is set to entice you onto the dancefloor this year.

Currently based in Bristol, Pluralist has achieved great accolades from his productions, DJ sets and radio shows. He has been firmly rooted in grassroots club culture since 2018 and his influences from this scene can be spotted in all respects. Notably, Pluralist has previously released on Panel Audio, Control Freak Recordings and Manuka Records, as well as hosting regular residencies with Rinse France and 1020 Radio.

'B Squared' commences the EP with an uplifting rhythm, featuring a meandering high pitched vocal and the right amount of rave stabs to make it feel ferociously nostalgic. Following this, Pluralist takes to another mutation of techno with 'Jerzee', reaching a slightly faster tempo, more broken beats and ecstatic metallic twangs throughout. 'Dry Martini' then steadily brings it down a pace, with punchy underlying bass and rhythmic
claps that create a warm staccato feel to conclude the EP.
