Nagoya-based multi-instrumentalist and rising DJ Hiroyuki Kato returns to the ever-consistent Flexi Cuts with Life 今 (FLEX 031), a record that perfectly distills the artist’s layered approach to sound and the label’s instinct for unearthing voices that carry both groove and depth.
Having built a relationship with the label over the past two years—already signing an EP and a single—Kato now delivers a project that feels like a culmination of that dialogue: five tracks on wax, complemented by an additional cut exclusive to the digital edition.

True to its title, Life 今 exudes immediacy and presence. Kato draws on his background as a polyrhythmic player, folding live instrumentation into supple house frameworks, always with a subtle melodic sensibility.
The vinyl selections range from the quietly propulsive to the rhythmically expansive, each tune infused with that warm, unhurried Flexi aura. Basslines strut with understated confidence, chords shimmer with daylight energy, and the arrangements move with a natural, unforced flow.

DJ Cwrw is a DJ and producer from Cardiff, Wales. He learnt to produce music during covid lockdown periods and has been refining his sound for over 5 years. Cwrw has been a resident with local party Cynt from 2023 which has been running for over 17 years. He spent many of his formative years going to parties / events and festivals around Cardiff and the UK. The deep house sound 2012 - 2014 was a key gateway era to discovering other areas of electronic music. A few key influences includes Bristol club Motion, Jacobs Basement in Cardiff, the Rainbow Venues formerly of Birmingham and friends over the last 15 years.

As a producer DJ Cwrw is focuses on making music that translates to the club / party environment usually with a 4tothefloor kick, groovy bassline often punctuated by catchy vocal samples and lovely bleep bloop sounds. Cwrw is always looking to move forward as a producer making house and techno that blurs between genres.

The Love Drug EP takes a strong influence from labels such as Running Back, Permanent Vacation and Phantasy Sound. Each has a unique catalogue of leftfield house / techno and everything in between. The title track Love Drug has a strong leading vocal, rolling bassline, punchy drums with a slightly minimal feel. This track was developed and changed a number of times over a few months. Pumping Pads has a class off beat bassline that carries the track throughout with a deep 4x4 kick. The tracks gives an emotive feel with uplifting pads and could be used either at peak time or to close. Finally is Release with lots of forward momentum and recognisable vocal making it a perfect track for peak time on the dance floor.

Long-time NuNorthern Soul contributor B.J. Smith is a man in constant motion. Alongside his solo output, he divides his time between playing guitar in Crazy P man James Baron’s JIM outfit, contributing to acclaimed projects such as Smith & Mudd, Bison and White Elephant, and composing for TV. With such a packed schedule, his solo releases have been scarce, the last being a stripped-back take on his Big Sur single in late 2023.It’s been even longer since Smith added to his much-loved Dedications To The Greats series, which began on NuNorthern Soul in 2013 with striking reworks of tracks by Mos Def and The Pharcyde. Later volumes saw him turn his hand to Outkast, Prefab Sprout and Soul II Soul, each treated with his signature blend of warmth and invention.
Now, five years on, Smith returns with ‘Dedications To The Greats Vol. 4’. This time he offers a “cover of a cover” – a bold reinterpretation of Billy Swan’s version of ‘Don’t Be Cruel’, itself made famous by the great Elvis Presley. The project emerged from Smith’s shared love of Swan’s recording with pedal steel player Joe Harvey-Whyte, whose plaintive, expressive touch is central to the EP. Across three distinct takes, Smith and Harvey-Whyte weave something both expansive and intimate. Leading the set is the 14-minute ‘Mother Earth version’, where rippling acoustic guitars, reverb-laden pedal steel and Smith’s wordless vocals drift into a slow, hypnotic groove. It’s a spacious journey that unfolds with languid solos, gentle percussion and hazy organ motifs, sounding worlds apart from either Presley or Swan.
The ‘Earth Heart version’ – presented in both vocal and instrumental form – takes a different path, pushing the song’s lyric and melody to the fore. Here, Tamar Osborn’s graceful flute lines intertwine with guitar and pedal steel before Smith’s heartfelt vocal enters. The arrangement swells and recedes in waves, building patiently towards a powerful close. Rounding out the release, the ‘Root Heart Instrumental’ fuses Balearic breeziness with Americana tones. Shuffling drums, sun-lit acoustic strums, warm bass and Harvey-Whyte’s pedal steel combine with Osborn’s flute to create a glowing, love-soaked sunset moment. The result is another inspired chapter in Smith’s ongoing exploration of other people’s songs – familiar yet transformed, timeless yet utterly his own.

A meticulously produced work of live-recorded soulful funk, ‘Gravity’ channels the intricate arrangement style of 80s Brazilian producer Lincoln Olivetti, with punchy drums and bass, a tight and agile brass section, and tasty guitar and synth interplay. Brandon’s voice floats above it all, equally gritty and atmospheric, to deliver the relentlessly catchy hook that launches the song straight into orbit!
