Swaggering up to our 1 More Mix series brandishing an amen in one hand and a big old warpy bassline in the other, oozing low end frequencies from every possible pore; it’s the one and only Conrad Subs.

Since making his release debut in 2017, the Ipswich producer has been positively unavoidable, proffering his party-ready tear-ups and rave-tuned rinse-outs on the hyper-regular.

In the last few months we’ve enjoyed three walloping editions from the south east junglist: Ravers EP on Liondub International in November, Nexus EP on Deep In The Jungle in December and now, to wrap up January, the epic Don’t Blame The DJ on Nuusic which is out on the very day we've posted this mix! 

For us mere jungle loving mortals, it’s a veritable feast. For Conrad it’s business as usual as he balances regular life with an ever-growing profile and a never-ending creative thirst for the craft of drum & bass that is so strong that it brought him out of DJ retirement!

Kiljoy has been on 1 More Thing’s mind a lot lately…

Recently spotted dropping 1 More Tune tracks on his Twitch stream, he’s also been critically appraised by his peers in a number of interviews...

In our popular podcast interview, the legendary DJ Storm effectively describes him as a hero of modern drum & bass jungle.

And a few months back the tragically departed Jay Bulletproof categorically states Evan Short (and his Concord Dawn partner Matt Harvey) as New Zealand drum & bass pioneers.

For a long time, his pioneer status as part of Concord Dawn was his lasting contribution to drum & bass. But in 2018 he returned to add a whole other chapter as Digital lured him back into fray releasing the electrifying Kiljoy debut on his label Function - Bad Man / Air Raid – in December 2018.

Five years later, he's now based in Washington DC and in eye of the perfect storm as the US recharges its love for drum & bass on levels we’ve never seen before.

He’s also packing a hell of a lot of incendiary bangers and even more dubs, including the imminent release of major league dubs Depth Charge, Heart Of A Lion, Stick ‘Em Up and Space Bells.

In light of these LONG-awaited releases, and his re-kindled love for mixing and recent move onto Twitch, we thought it would be churlish not to cop a mix for the 1 More Mix series and have a good catch up.

LTJ Bukem & MC Conrad Essential Mix 1995

A month on from Conrad's passing I was reminiscing to the second Bukem and Conrad Essential mix and thought I'd upload. Equally brilliant and revolutionary as their first Essential mix, this one built on the impeccable selection of 1995 with another slew of dubplates highlighting incredible tunes that would come out of Good Looking and a few other select labels over the coming years. The tunes ranged from intricate ambient workouts like Jonny L Tychonic Cycle to deep amen batterers like Universal's Live Session (which was a little different and better on dubplate). Some took a little longer such as the lost G-Force Proximity tune that didn't surface till only recently. It's no exaggeration to say all the tunes on this mix were peak golden age, particularly Crystl Mindgames and Intense Only You...

Again, Conrad absolutely rules this mix from start to finish with total confidence and deep soulful lyrics - beautiful stuff from the leading master of ceremonies. A perfect mix for a summer's day.

Manchester’s techno pioneers, 808 State, were formed in 1988 when Martin Price, owner of the city’s seminal Eastern Bloc underground record store, teamed up with Graham Massey, formerly of Factory Records’ Biting Tongues. Other members included Gerald Simpson(later known as A Guy Called Gerald), Andrew Barker and Darren Partington(DJ Duo The Spinmasters). Numerous collaborations & re-mixes followed as well as some of the finest acid house & techno tunes ever created.
For this mix, i have taken 26 tracks, chronologically, from the bands first 5 albums, and associated singles, between 1988 & 1991.

PHOTEK : Essential Mix on Radio 1 : December 1997

this is the mix, consisting of Moving Shadow releases only, clocking in at 4 (four) hours and is the first mix of three. all tracks featured (except one) are from releases with catalogue numbers before 100 - roughly at that time there was a major change in drum&bass as a whole - it became more cold, nervous, machine-like and I felt emotionally more connected to the more soulful, atmospheric and jazzy stuff being released earlier than that.

as you might have figured out by now, I was - and still am, in a way - an addict of this fine label which managed to release a hell of an amount of most forefront quality drum&bass and jungle of it's time. I was so obsessed I had to get every single vinyl Moving Shadow release. after 250 or so releases, I still am halfway. for me, it was a label with unsurpassed quality/quantity ratio, with an unique sound, the cream of the crops, the icing on a chocolate cake. few other drum&bass labels have ever gotten close to this, most notably the Good Looking empire, Metalheadz.

if anyone should care, it was recorded using two stanton st-90 turntables, a numark dm3001x mixer and two stanton sk520 cartridges, meaning it's an all vinyl mix and recorded in one go.

as I said before, there are two more 4-hour moving shadow only sessions. my ultimate dream would be to re-record and re-master these mixes using digital copies, to ensure the best sound quality which the pieces of music contained definitely deserve. these mixes were intended to be a journey through the soundscape, the snapshot of mid-90s moving shadow world, therefore, my input is merely a vessel for the music.
