“Paris-based Franco-British percussionist and sound artist Sébastien Forrester returns with his first solo release in almost two years for French powerhouse Promesses: a 5-track EP called ‘Turmoil’ that, more than ever in his career, brings to life the crossroads of experimental club mutations, leftfield drumming and ritual music, with a huge emphasis on trance-inducing rhythmic structures.

‘Turmoil’ is eminently stormy and insurgent, saturated by wild emotions, deeply rooted in a period of mistrust, anxiety and relentless hunt for hope. It also embodies a more collective and playful approach to composing with the club in mind, as collaborating with friends (Ehua, Citizen Boy and 3Phaz here) had somehow become a way of keeping up with the dancefloor throughout the successive lockdowns: Forrester’s approach to rhythm and sound design then meets Ehua’s wide oceans of bass and eerie textures, Citizen Boy’s fiery original gqom sound and 3Phaz’s hybrid post-Chaabi hard drum variations.

Rudely tumultuous pipes, both organic and artificially recreated using FM synthesis, span across the whole EP - most of them draw from the cabrette, a 19th century type of bagpipe originating from Auvergne. As Sébastien Forrester recently found out, the bagpipe somehow embodies a bridge between his French Occitan roots and the British side of his family: it has since then been a fascinating object of research. Most percussion elements were first recorded using a singular drum kit made of bells, custom cymbals, prepared bongos and tambours, created by his friend Léo Liégeois, then digitally processed through various digital patches. The raw, live feel of some of the drums, very present throughout the record, is a nod at Forrester’s background as a jazz drummer.

Formerly known as Holy Strays (acclaimed by the likes of Pitchfork, the Fader, Fact Magazine, Dazed, etc), Sébastien Forrester has always had a recurring obsession for sacred music and idiosyncratic sounds - his very first encounter with music and percussion as a kid was the Bwiti ritual drums, while he was living in Gabon and central Africa with his family in the late 1990s. The drummer and producer started releasing music early on, at the age of 19, and has put out records on international labels such as Not Not Fun and Hands in the Dark. Over the last years, he has also remixed Rejjie Snow, SUUNS and Forest Swords, and shared stages with acts as diverse as SBTRKT, The Soft Moon and Zola Jesus, all across Europe. His latest pieces of work explore his relationship to trance, pipes and percussive instruments. Recent collaborations include Brodinski, Lafawndah, Slikback, Coby Sey, as well as Toulouse-based experimental dancer and choreographer Pierre Rigal.”

The roar of the engines ignites the atmosphere of the garage. The metallic clinks blend with the deep rumble of the bass, creating a mechanical symphony that awakens the dormant assembly line. A technician, wrecnh in hand, is busy solving an issue with a faulty hose. She inspects every corner of the engine, from the recently drained oil filter to the perfectly intact cylinder head.

Another mechanic is about to check the clutch. He engages the 3rd gear with precision, while the rhythms infiltrate the workshop. The radio station broadcasts catchy beats, a fusion of scrapyard club and broken noise, forming a sonic canvas that envelops the space.

The sound of percusion guides the movements of the mechanic, revealing the nuances of each action. Post-pop covers and remixes intertwine, creating an unexpected soundtrack for this mechanical inspection session, accompanying the rotations of the wheels during three drifts.

"Troisième Vitesse" is a unique fusion between the world of Garage 83-C and the unrestrained creativity of club music. The metallic noises converse with the sonic experiments, creating an immersive experience where mechanics and electronic sequences come together.

Kreggo - R & B [GM00]

Brussels-based producer Hypna lands on Maloca Records for Arteria. Known for his versatile output of sci-fi influenced club music on labels including Boxed, Insert and his own imprint Plasma Sources, Arteria marks Hypna’s first EP via Maloca, and a radical take on his established sound.

Each of the 7 tracks on Arteria shifts Hypna’s hard-hitting and percussion-focused palette down into the chugging regions of 90-100BPM, where the artist explores his dancehall and southern-rap influences. This tempo range fascinates Hypna, regarding it as “a portal where so many different genres and energies meet allowing you to quickly shift from something slow and head bopping to a total different pace”. The resulting EP is a 7-track, club-scorching ride through Neptunes and Timbaland-tinged rap beats and slamming dancehall rhythms, all backed up by Hypna’s laser-fuelled percussion and rolling walls of sub-bass energy.

I was initially introduced to their work via ‘Drown to Float’, an EP of ambient trap edits of Gunna, lil Baby & Young Thug from 2020 😍 Since then, Violet has consolidated dreamlike sketches into fully-realised and introspective reimaginings of grime, including within a recent album w @nueen on Hyperdub Records & collaborative works with @space-afrika, Emily Glass, @blackhaine, Silkback / @freddymn, @daemondaemon, @aya_yco & more…

Hence Therefore makes a long overdue return to All Centre, putting together his first release on the label since 2019. The Warrang/Sydney-based artist delivers two fast-slow stormers on Elite Panic, channeling forward-thinking production into endlessly compelling dancefloor cuts.

The title track opens with dubbed-out sirens and scattered breaks, building the tension with elasticated bass hits and rolling kicks. Rising, radiant synths lift the track to new heights, reaching euphoric peaks amongst hectic percussive patterns which envelope and intoxicate the listener.

On Zero Trust, filtered vocals bubble beneath the surface whilst infectious percussion stutters across the frequency spectrum. A bouncy sub bass punches its way amongst the percussion whilst floaty synth lines alternate and intersect, reaching new levels with the introduction of a mesmerising droning synth line, then launching back into a heavy, propulsive rhythm.

'Elite Panic' is a forthcoming two-tracker by Gadigal/Wangal Land based Hence Therefore, a bouncy, melted duo of dancehall steppers. The producer, sometimes live performer & DJ has seen praise across the seas, with releases on Early Reflex, DECISIONS and 3bs, as well as regular plays by Batu, M.E.S.H., object blue, AYA, Laksa & many more.

'Zero Trust' is track 2/2 of the release. Regularly switching between half & doubletime, 'Zero Trust' is like a soft, gooey centre at the core of any good dance floor. Textured, building and unpredictable, it seems to do everything bar physically lifting you off your feet.

Of the release, Hence Therefore shared: "The EP title is a phrase I came across in Rebecca Solnit's A Paradise Built In Hell - she writes that in a catastrophe most of us get on with helping each other with the necessities of life while the rich & powerful freak out about law, order & commerce... "

& of the track: "Some string-flourishing sample from the All Centre discord server got shredded into icy dancehall groove with a randomised arpeggiator. An uncharacteristically crisp & whirring stepper developed around it - playfully wrong-footed low end, attempted snare abstinence, snare indulgence, caroline_gasp.wav, things of this nature."
