004 - DJ Marcelle/Another Nice Mess: Sniff, Marcelle, Sniff!

As part of RA2122, our ongoing celebration of 21 years of club culture, we'll be featuring some of our favourite DJs from around the world, highlighting the parties or clubs most important to their lives in dance music. DJ Voices will be playing our RA2122 party in New York this Saturday, November 29th.

DJ Voices is a prime example of an artist that really can do it all. The New York-based artist, originally from Florida, has been an integral part of New York's electronic music as a DJ and as a booker at one of the city's best venues, Nowadays. Voices got her footing as a selector as a founding member of the DJ collective Working Women, but these days she performs solo through her Nowadays residency and her radio show on The Lot, Nothing In Moderation. Her sets are known for their psychedelic dynamism—her selection, with which she prioritizes "energy and drama over genre," often flits from rolling low-end music, uptempo tracks (that she then slows all the way down) and wonky leftfield beats. 

"It would be hard to overstate how much Nowadays is part of my story at this point, personally and professionally," Voices told RA in the following interview. Her approach to assembling this mix she recorded for us makes that abundantly clear. The mix she recorded for RA—which sprawls out over almost three hours—features tracks that she has either played in her five-year tenure at Nowadays or that she plans to play there in the future. She organized the set in a similar way to the way she goes about her Nowadays sets. She kicks off with fast and nimble bass music ("I like to start fast in hopes of people dancing half-time"), then transitions into a knotty web of dubstep and bright percussive tracks and closes with weightless jungle. The playlist she sourced from to create this mix featured music from every Nowadays resident. It's this same thoughtfulness and meticulous attention to detail that has made her a household name in her local scene.

MUTEK présente un set de IHA, artiste et producteur·rice basé·e à Vancouver qui gère le label NAGA et organise des évènements festifs.

﻿L'intention de IHA avec ce mix était de combiner deux objectifs : créer une palette sonore pour la performance live qu’iel prépare avec ephemeral objects en tant que i+eo, et mettre en avant des producteur·rice·s estimé·e·s qu’iel peut jouer en tant que DJ (principalement dans des contextes de festivals et certains clubs plus pointus ou dans une approche plus introspective de l’écoute).
Iel a inclus plusieurs productrices et artistes queer (monosym, Lemna, othrworld, MV², Prieste5s, Birthname) et a essayé d’équilibrer le mix entre des morceaux d’Europe et d’Amérique du Nord, avec une belle présence canadienne.
Iel n’a pas souvent l’occasion de jouer dans ce registre, étant souvent programmé·e pour des soirées plus festives ici à Vancouver, donc créer ce mix a été très satisfaisant. Une écoute au casque est recommandée.

MUTEK invite IHA - 28 Mai 2025

Our Off The Record mix series returns with a radio-show like hour long mix from Music From Memory affiliated Berlin based Electronica / Jazz trio The Zenmenn.
The Zenmenn are a genre-blurring trio known for their lush, escapist soundscapes that blend ambient, Balearic, and cosmic funk influences. With a flair for vintage textures and laid-back grooves, their music conjures a sense of timeless serenity—equally suited for sun-drenched afternoons or introspective nights. 
The Zenmenn debuted in 2021 with Enter The Zenmenn on Music From Memory, a dreamy blend of ambient textures, soft rock, and global influences. They followed up with Hidden Gem in 2022, a collaborative album with John Moods shaped by loose jam sessions and warm, nostalgic tones. Both releases highlight their signature fusion of cosmic calm and crate-digger sensibility.
Their contribution to the Off The Record mix series showcases their crate-digging sensibilities and deep reverence for global sounds, weaving together a meditative journey that’s both soulful and transportive. 
We had a brief chat with the band (fronted through the words of their Keyboardist Magnus) about the mix and about what they had coming up in the rest of 2025.

He's best known for some of the most creative edits in the game, like my personal favorite "Down 4 U (forgotten demo)". Most recently, Dee released his first EP called "Calm & Collected vol. 1" It's available for your pleasure on his SoundCloud page, make sure you check that out. 

I like to ask artists how they came up with their alias, always makes for interesting conversation. When asked how he got his name he jokingly said "Because DeeDontCare about nothing but the Music." and it made so much sense ;)
